1. McCain, but I would prefur him over Bayh for vp
although he HAS ruled it out and it won't happen. I don't base my preference for vp on where they lie on any liberal conservative scale, I base it on who would help the ticket most.

Bayh is milquetoasty and another born-into-political power dime-a-dozen politician. McCain is one of the most popular politicians by far in America up there with Rudy Giuliani, probably more than Rudy. Certainly more respected than Giuliani.

2. McCain has more integrity
At least he admits he's a Republican. Bayh is a neocon shitbag sellout, and an embarrassment to his late father.

3. Perhaps you would prefer another Republican Senator from Indiana
Indiana is not a liberal state. Bayh's father was such an astute politician that he was defeated for reelection by a guy named Dan Quayle.

8. He was too liberal for the voters of IN
Hopefully his son will keep up the good work and remain a centrist.

10. Where do you live?
I'm going to assume you don't live in a very Conservative/Republican state. Where you live, you may have the luxury of having democratic senators who can stand fully for liberal ideals and not have to worry about loosing their jobs. Most people who come from more conservative states understand how hard it is for people who are even the slightest bit tot he left of the Republicans to get elected. But when the Republican candidate is a racist sack of shit who you can't listen to for five minutes without going nuts, any democrat who's at least somewhat socially liberal and has a chance to beat that Republican, looks like Jesus Christ.

15. That's some impressive, persuasive rhetoric
'neocon shitbag sellout'

Wow, I wonder if I will ever be able to attain such heights of eloquence.

How did you achieve such an impressive command of the English language?

5. Some DU'ers must be living on another planet

Off the top of my head, I can't think of a single issue on which McCain is clearly more liberal than Bayh is. Certainly not on Iraq, on which McCain has consistently been among the most hawkish Senators. On the other hand, I can think of many issues issues on which Bayh is more liberal than McCain is, including abortion and gun control.

6. point well taken
but I do think McCain is better on both CFR and corporate welfare. Neither make up for his significantly worse views on a host of issues but it is a couple of issues.

7. Better on CFR and corporate welfare?
Edited on Thu Apr-08-04 11:07 PM by dolstein
How has McCain has voted more "liberal" on CFR and corporate welfare. Personally, I don't consider McCain to be especially liberal, objectively speaking, on CFR, since he opposes public funding of congressional campaigns. On CFR, McCain gets a lot of credit (probably more than he deserves) simply for being a Republican.

12. He has endorsed making TV stations give free air time
which, to me, is a perferable solution. Byah isn't in favor of that. Also on corporate welfare, McCain is pretty well known for opposing that. One example would be the new TV licences. He wanted them to pay for thos as opposed to getting them for free.

11. The Grand Slam Answer:
McCain. By being a Republican and by voting for the Republican to be the Majority Leader in the Senate, he's a gazillion more times conservative than Bayh. At least Bayh would enable a Democratic Majority Leader if he had the chance.

13. to be fair
most studies of voting habits of Senators would indicate that Evan Bayh is to the left of John McCain but Bayh would be to the right of many of his Democratic collegues.

14. Wrong perspective yet again
You can see why polls are frustrating. Bayh is perceived as nice, honest and soft. McCain's personality is more honest and decisive and passionate, clip and cut.

In fact the perception of personality has everything to do with acceptance(especially by befuddled male machismo admirers), the kind of moral quagmire that libertarians proudly march into and wonder later what happened. The same people admire outright phonies like Powell, Arnold, maybe even Guiliani for all I know.

Carry a soft spot for their character and integrity- such as it appears or maybe even is- and STOP considering them for elected office under liberal or Democratic auspices.

The same goes for electing people solely on their character when because of their party affiliation they immediately enter the rubber stamp factory to be crushed and reformed by the establishment and their big donors. Can candidates be "tough" leaders? The voters should be tough too and shove the fantasies aside. This is life and death, not a Mr. America contest.
