57% Say Candidate With Most Votes Should Get Nomination
Saturday, March 08, 2008

In the craziness of the race for the Democratic Presidential Nomination, it is possible that one candidate might finish the Primary Season with the most pledged delegates while another could end up with the most popular votes. If that happens, 57% of voters nationwide believe the nomination should go to the candidate with the most votes overall. A Rasmussen Reports telephone survey found that just 26% disagree and say the nomination should go to the candidate with the most pledged delegates.

Among Democratic voters, 59% believe the candidate with the most popular votes deserves the nomination while 25% take the opposite view. Barack Obama will almost certainly wind up with more pledged delegates than Hillary Clinton. However, in what might create a nightmare scenario for Democratic Party leaders, it is also quite possible that Clinton will wind up with more popular votes than Obama.

Still, 45% of Obama voters believe that the nomination should go to the candidate with the most popular votes rather than the candidate with the most pledged delegates. Just 32% of Obama supporters believe the candidate with the most pledged delegates should win.

Clinton voters overwhelmingly believe the winner of the popular vote should get the nomination.

4. this isn't changing anything
Neither candidate will secure the nomination with pledged delegates, so the question is how should the superdelegates vote? 57% say they should vote for the popular vote getter. That's not changing any rules.

7. So how many Popular votes = 1 caucus vote?
If the number is not reasonable, then understand that those making the argument will lose all Super delegates from all Caucus states.

How many apples = 1 orange?

8. I don't understand what you're trying to say
My point is a simple one. There's no rule whatsoever regarding how superdelegates have to vote. So if they vote on whose shoes they like better, that's still not breaking the rules.

10. Ok. That's true
It's just that no one has defined the "popular vote" in a way that takes into account caucuses at all or in a rational manner that the argument would sell with the super delegates of caucus states.

I apologize for the confusion. I misconstrued that you were supporting the "popular vote" and was hoping to find someone who could define it to account for these things.

19. That immediately eliminates...
...122 Super delegates of Caucus states from buying into the argument.

Wow that equates to 15% of the Super delegates being sacrificed. Not a good start when trying to get th 60%-85% needed to overturn the pledged delegate count.

Next strategy? Anyone?

2. this won't happen because a lot of Caucus states are not included in the Popular Vote total
They are only represented by their delegates.
There are People in those states that should not have their votes ignored.

Pledged delegates is the only true measure of success.

3. If people were asked that
their opinion would change. I wonder who paid for the poll that didn't clarify the rules before they asked the question.

13. That's not true, the numbers exist, and they are just as valid.
Caucuses report their individual turnouts, they have to to be able to calculate their state delegates. And it is possible to reverse the calculation and get the actual number if you want.

14. Superdelegates will make their decision on a variety of factors.
If people here think "pledged delegates" alone will be that factor, they are delusional.

If you 57% would kindly get off your duffs, go to Washington, and reinstate President Gore, I'd appreciate it.

To much ridicule, of course, but it's common damn sense.

It seems *many many many MANY* people here forgot Bush v Gore.

18. This is within the rules and makes sense
but the superdelegates should make up their own minds based on what they believe is best for the party and the country.
