59,000 Registered Democrats in Wyoming
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23534864/

The epic battle between Clinton and Obama has given Wyoming's 59,000 registered Democrats — outnumbered more than 2-to-1 by Republicans in Vice President Dick Cheney's home state — a relevancy they have not experienced in a presidential race in nearly 50 years.

11. Um... you don't understand how caucuses work....
The numbers on the screen are NOT the numbers of people who showed up at the caucuses.... it is the number of DELEGATES that were selected at each caucus.

A Caucus with 7,000 "votes" means that probably 35,000 to 40,000 people showed up (the ratio is usually 5 to 1).

38. I am quite aware of how caucuses work. You are wrong.
The number I stated, and the number being reported by CNN, is the number of voters.

Here's the most recent update on state delegates: Last five caucus results now coming in. Hillary wins Weston County. Obama won Big Horn and Johnson. Only Sheridan and Teton are left. The delegate count is now at 160 for Obama, 116 for Hillary, 2 uncommitted. Again, these are delegates to the state convention to be held in late May. CNN now projects Obama to win. Sheridan has 18 delegates and Teton has 17. The caucus ends at 6pm MT in Sheridan.

Albany County (where the university is) and Laramie County (where the state capitol is). Natrona county (Casper is one of the state's two largest cities) came in at just under 1000.

http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/primaries/results/county/#val=WYDEMCAUCUS1

on edit: It looks like Teton County, which finished last, also had over 1000 participants.

Has a competitive race for its one congressional seat this year.

Let's not be writing Wyoming or anywhere else off as an untouchable Republican bastion.

27. So why did Hillary campaign in Wyoming
and tell people their votes counted?

And why doesn't Minnesota, a reliably "blue" state, not count, either? Because it's a caucus state?

The rule is simply that states Hillary loses are the ones that don't count. They do count until she loses them, but then they don't.

33. That has already been determined in delegat allocation
WY gets less delegates because it has been red for the last three elections. That argument would have some merit had it not already been considered in determining the delegate count.

See here for allocation formulas and information:

http://www.thegreenpapers.com/P08/D-Alloc.phtml

Still, the two delegates Obama picked up from this small single red state equated to about 1/4 of the delegates Hillary picked up on the Tuesday with 2 of the 3 biggest remaining states (at that time) and two smaller ones voting. Even with the smaller delegation, it shows how small a victory Clinton actually achieved on Tuesday.

34. There are only about 500,000 people living in
so it's a bit smaller population wise than Montana. Lots of open country up there.

Like many of the northwestern states, the area is pretty rural and people at caucuses tend to know each other pretty well.

Does anyone have any hard numbers as yet?

43. another one of those phenomenons
Obama wins Wyoming caucuses
Obama wins Wyoming caucuses

By MEAD GRUVER, Associated Press Writer 30 minutes ago

From the first caucuses of the day, it became clear the state's Democrats were showing up in large numbers. In 2004, a mere 675 people statewide took part in the caucuses.

In Sweetwater County, more than 500 people crowded into a high school auditorium and another 500 were lined up to get inside.

"I'm worried about where we're going to put them all. But I guess everybody's got the same problem," said Joyce Corcoran, a local party official. "So far we're OK. But man, they keep coming."

Party officials struggled with how to handle the overflow crowds. The start of the Converse County caucus was delayed due to long lines.

In Cheyenne, scores of late arrivers were turned away when party officials stopped allowing people to get in line at 11 a.m. EST. A party worker stood at the end of the line with a sign reading, "End of the line. Caucus rules require the voter registration process to be closed at this time."

State party spokesman Bill Luckett said they were obligated to follow its rules as well as those of the Democratic National Committee regarding caucus procedures.

"Everybody knew the registration began over an hour before the caucus was called to order. We've done everything we could to accommodate people in the long lines," Luckett said.

After initially accepting provisional ballots from about 20 people who remained behind at the caucus site, party officials said they and both campaigns had decided not to count those votes. John Millin, state party chair, said doing so would have been unfair to those who had left after being turned away.

In Casper, home of the state party's headquarters, hundreds were lined up at the site of the Natrona County caucus. The location was a hotel meeting room with a capacity of 500. Some 7,700 registered Democrats live in the county.

"We'll have to put 'em in the grass after a while," said Bob Warburton, a local party official.
