My Sister-In-Law Won't Vote For Obama....wanna guess why?
because he's black-which has my wife and I scratching our heads wondering where THIS comes from. The funny thing is their grampa was part African American. So I think this puts things somewhat in perspective for me and makes me wonder how many of the women around HERE are scared of the big black man?

75. This would mean that Middle Aged White women are willing to
forfeit their right and their daughters' right to choose all in the name of being racist. I hope that strategy works for them. They will have made their beds. Hope there will be no crying in the streets when Pres. McCain names his Supreme Court justice Replacements.

11. That's what the Ohio and Texas primaries were about...
Hesitation among whites to actually nominate a black man. They knew that if he won those states, the deal would be sealed. And they balked.

Fortunately, Wyoming didn't. And I hope that Mississippi has the same courage.

35. I think what it says is that...
...Most Americans realized how badly the Republican party has screwed this country up. And that most Americans are willing to put their best interests above their prejudices. It's not ideal, but it's a start. And we have to make this step sometime.

40. I think you severely underestimate the courage of me and my fellow Ohioans.
It's easy to slap the tag "racists" on another state, so long as you don't live there.

I believe the situation in Ohio has greater complexity than that. Also, have you paid any attention to Texas lately?

42. I believe the title of my post mentioned Texas.
So I'm not sure what you're talking about.

If you read my posts, you will see that I did not say that Ohio was more racist than other states, but that, confronted with the prospect of putting a black man over the top, they balked. My argument is supported by the increase in voters who selected race as a "very important" factor in their votes. This was true in both Texas and Ohio.

There are still a lot of "closet racists" in this country (I'm not saying your SIL is - but your post raises the issue), which concerns me about his chances. They will say all the right things out loud, but when they get in that voting booth, their prejudice will take over.

In one camp I'm a racist and in the other camp I'm a self hating misogynist. Damn I voted on policies not on race or gender. there is an undercurrent of fear that is not talked about. i think realizes it though and tailored his campaign to absorb i and reduce it to as small an obstacle as possible. living here, i will say texas is gonna be a tough state to over come the racial divide. but on the flip side its not only a question of his electability. if he wins there is the great fear the target is marked. i know black people who truly believe he will not survive first term. i worry over it too.

Thats cuz everyone he's been compared to, MLK, JFK, RFK and even Regan have been shot. Think about it the people who were the most visionary leaders got killed, and then theres Regan who doesn't fit as far as being a dogooder. Maybe thats why he survived. Its almost as if the country on an unconscious level is masochistic and would rather be permanently screwed by the wealthy and connected. Or maybe the CIA just whacks anyone not status quo.

In the event President Obama got shot I would riot too, and i'm white.

37. A lot of Hillary's support has come from racists
The exit polls bear that out. There are probably some whites who are voting for Obama for the same reason-- his race-- out of guilt about the long history of oppression toward African Americans. Race sadly matters in this race, as it does every day in lots of things. Part of the reason older white voters haven't voted for Obama like whites younger than 60 is Obama's race. They come from a different time. They were raised differently.

We can't let that stop us from nominating him, though. We have to do what's best for the country and hope we can convince these people by November to be open minded about supporting a black candidate for President.

Obama is cognizant of this. He doesn't talk about the fact that he's black, or an African American. He does refer to how improbable it is for someone like himself to be in this position, but that's the language he uses-- talking about it, but not explicitly.

70. Did I say ALL white voters? No.
Obama's race is a negative for a significant number of white voters. Even in the Democratic primaries, it's there. It's even worse in a general election electorate. Less educated whites are more likely to have backwards views about race, which is why racism was more prevalent in areas of the South with lower education (states with long histories of poor civil rights records like MS and AL are at the bottom of state rankings for education and that's also part of the reason they do things like vote Republican and respond to the idiotic rhetoric and ads from the GOP).

In places like Texas and California, Obama was hurt by support among Hispanics (especially older Hispanics). Hispanics are less likely to support African Americans because they view their lives in a zero sum way, where advancement for one minority (blacks) hurts the advancement of another minority (themselves). Because of class segregation in the US, lower income blacks and Hispanics live in the same communities and fight for the same available resources. This is seen more clearly in large cities like LA.

http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5hFnNkRpZjdC3tii48UTxR_PxkU7AD8VA17QG0">Read this for more info

To further make this clear, obviously not all (or even most) Hillary supporters are doing so because of Obama's race. That would be a ridiculous assertion, and I'm not making it.

73. That's what is so interesting
It was said by Democrat operatives looking at the race back when Obama won Iowa that the Clintons are quite interested in the advancement of African Americans, but why does it have to be this African American and this attempt at advancement? They would have been very supportive of Obama if he'd wait his turn, so to speak. African Americans have waited a long time already, IMO, and this AA, Barack Obama, is a guy who is an amazing leader who just happens to be black.

68. I was kind of annoyed at being there since I am sick so I probably did
it with my annoyance. It is hard enough sleeping when you are ill, being in a strange place with a gazillion wires attached to you makes it worse.

69. I have anothrer friend that did that .For some reason, she had to do it twice.
Maybe it is "mood sensitive" but you would think it is just supposed to monitor your sleep patterns or lack therof.I would think annoyance might prevent you from sleeping!

45. A dear friend of mine from the deep south kinda said the same thing.
She said I shouldn't vote for Obama because he's a Muslim.

I kindly pointed out that the rumor was wrong.

Then she said he wouldn't say the pledge of allegiance.

I bluntly pointed out that was incorrect.

Finally, she feebly said, "I just don't think America is ready for a black president".

On the plus side, she lives in a state that hasn't gone for the democratic nominee in a couple of decades.

52. My mom won't vote for hrc if she gets the ticket....
this is something that I really want to state because I think hrc people will need to address this if she gets the ticket. My mom is a black woman who is very pro black but in a positvie way. In america being black is bad. If we have thick hair its bad or a dark skin tone than we arent beautiful unless you come from africa than thats ok. The attacks on obama and his church only enraged her because we go to an AME church. If anyone knows the history of this church they will tell you how many blacks were medothist but that church didnt treat us fair. Therefore rev. Allen started a new church for blscks. Its not meant to discriminate but yo instill black values and to give us our own church where we wont feel like second class citzens. So when obama and his church was attacked my mom was angry. She loves obama and is hoping he wins. But if not she said that she will never vote again. She has voted for the dem ticket all her life. But that she is tired of being spit on in terms of her race. She wants a revolt or a sit out of all blacks in nov if Hilary gets the ticket.

At the end of the day I kind of agree with her in terms of a revolt. I feel like the dem party undervalues the black vote. As a young person I see so many blacks starting to become repubs and I wonder why? This party isn't offering me hope. I'm tired of hearing how we need a woman in office yet if he says we need a black in office its so bad. I don't know if I want to be apart of a party who caters to racists. What put me over the edge was when hrc people were egging on the black vs brown wars in Nevada. I'm tired of my race being picked on. I'm tired of this blind support of white candidates who don't understand my struggle. I may not become a repub but I feel this party is not good for my people and I need for this party to start waking up cuz I will leave.

60. Well what about those of us who are tired of our gender being undervalued and picked on?
Many od us feel that sexism is being tolerated but racism isn't. Many of us feel that Obama is just another male and black males had the right to vote way before women.I don't want to be part of a party that caters to sexism but where does the leave me? I am tired of this blind support of male candidates who don't understand my struggle.

She's just not sure that someone with the middle name "Hussein" should be President.

66. I'm in WV
and I am doing my part to stop this "black" crap. I live in a small community and most all know each other.

oh...the whispers are everywhere...grocery store, post office, on the street.
I butt right into the conversation.

I say "black? don't be so ignorant, he is half Kenyan just like you are half italian, polish or whatever"

Some get pissed, others all slackjawed say "never thought of it that way"

67. Well, quite frankly, I don't give a damn. I have truly ignorant family members and I don't give a
damn about their stupidity, either.

And Obama isn't exactly big, either. He's quite skinny.

71. Not surprising, sadly.
I heard about a poll in Ohio where they found out that 16% of Dems voted based on race alone--and they overwhelmingly went Hillary.

Nothing to see here, folks, move along...

76. I'm a male and I'm not the least bit scared of electing a black man
I am scared of electing a man who destroys other people in the most personal of ways in order to fulfil his lust for power. Obama's campaign has been built on tearing Hillary down on an incredibly personal level. He has behaved disgracefully and I will never cast a ballot for him.

79. I wonder MORE why you are race-baiting?
and using the old stereotypical "big bad black man raping poor white woman" as your central theme.
Try harder next time.
I give this an "F" for absolutely NO creativity.
If your sis-in-law is NOT voting for Obama...it is probably because she thinks he is a shitty choice for a candidate.

83. Yes, indeed, there is so much "worry" and "concern". The best thing any of these mopey, woe is me
folks or outright dispruptors could do for their state of mind is real world involvement in the election process, or anything that brings them together with like minded people in the community.

But, it's so much easier, and for the disruptors alone at their keyboards, satisfying in an empty way, to just type away for hours on a message board.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. :-)

Lifelong Democrat, abortion clinic volunteer and in a bi-racial marriage- you would figure she was as progressive as they come. Yet she hates Jews. Some people just have their prejudices.

85. Sadly there is racism as well as sexism. People won't vote for Obama
because he's black. People won't vote for Hillary because she's a woman. I'm encouraged the younger generation seems to have blurred the lines a bit and aren't as prone to hold such stupid notions.
