We have hostages in Iraq. Did we not have Hostages in Iran in 1980? Wasn't that one of the reasons Reagan was elected for freeing the Hostages? Lets get Kerry to negoiate the release of the hostages in Iraq! Or is this really :tinfoilhat:

1. hostages weren't released until Reagan became president..
just a final swipe at Carter...there are 'theories' and claims Reagan worked to keep the hostages in Iran until he was elected, but there's nothing there...

having Kerry negotiate with the people holding the hostages would be a very bad idea...

not saying its true - I am definitely not the one to defend or debunk - but there is a bush in the equation...

8. Riiiight Rep. Lee Hamilton headed the investigation . . .
makes you wonder why *Bush picked him to be co-chair of the 9/11 Commission?

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the idea that Reagan/Bush people did indeed secretly negotiate for the hostages release.

9. Pathetically Consumed with Hatred?
No, just willing to look beyond an official Congressional commission. Democrats were extremely wary of making accusations against a President so many people adored. There would have had to be a smoking gun. Since Reagan's people all denied it, there was no finding.

If you go overseas, it's a different story. It's a common belief that Reagan made an agreement with the Iranians to delay releasing the hostages in return for later concessions. The existence of the October Surprise is confirmed by prime-minister or cabinet-level people in:

  • France
  • Israel
  • Egypt
  • Russia (then Soviet Union)
  • Palestinian Authority
  • Iran

Seriously. Look at that Consortium News piece. There's lots more, too.

11. Heh, and here I thought it was a given. This just came up with the in-laws
at Easter dinner and everyone, even the Repugs in the family agreed the plan to release the hostages under Reagan was true.

2. Wouldn't it be ironic
if Jimmy Carter negotiated the release of the hostages?

4. October Suprise II: The Return of Ross Perot!
Unfortunately he won't be running for president, however.

Yes, something about having hostages brings back some shitty memories for a lot of Americans who remember the late Carter years and the machinations of the Reagan-CIA teams behind the scenes, brokering delayed freedom for hostages in exchange for boosting the polls. Sickening.

I don't know how this would reflect on Kerry, though. Probably positively...I hope.

I'm not sure why they would want that.
