Poll question: Geraldine Ferraro vs. Samantha Power - Whose comments are worse?
Edited on Tue Mar-11-08 04:53 PM by Cant trust em
We've recently had a pair of surrogates whose comments have enraged the opposition campaign. Going toe to toe in political noisemaking, who stepped over the boundary furthest?

1. She (Ferraro) is digging herself a hole
-snip-
But far from backing off from her initial remark, Ferraro defended it and elaborated on it.

"Any time anybody does anything that in any way pulls this campaign down and says let's address reality and the problems we're facing in this world, you're accused of being racist, so you have to shut up," Ferraro said. "Racism works in two different directions. I really think they're attacking me because I'm white. How's that?"

5. Um, no Geraldine, racism does not work in two directions.
But I'm sure that will go over real well with the Archie Bunker set who love to cry "reverse racism" at every opportunity.

10. Huh?
Are you saying it's impossible for a black person to be racist? Racism can and does work in any "direction." Yes, historically in this country racism has run predominately in one direction but to say as a general statement that "racism does not work in two directions" is just flat out stupid.

That said, Ferraro is completely wrong and yes, borderline racist, with her statement that Obama would not be where he is now unless he is a black man, as it implies in a very demeaning way that he's in the position he is (winning) due to some kind of ill-defined affirmative action. Total BS. And even if you accepted it as true (it isn't), then you could easily Hillary is only in the position she is in because she's a woman married to a former president. She's certainly not where she is based on her Senate record.

Apparently Hillary's campaign is now operating under the principle, "if you can't blind them with brilliance, dazzle them with bullshit."

Maybe if she quits immediately she can still make it out of here alive.

but I can't say what I want to about her without being called a sexist?

And I am a woman.

Edited on Tue Mar-11-08 05:03 PM by wienerdoggie
she was conducting her campaign--behavior-based criticism. Ferraro dissed all black people, who were apparently unaware of how privileged they were to be black, and how many doors their race opened for them. :sarcasm:

9. A "monster" is an abstract concept. Barack only being here because he's black? Racist.
Of course, Hillary's response was just about the most begrudging, mealy mouthed statement she could have made.

Big surprise.

11. and Power's was even supposed to be off the record
I know that it's not binding like attorney-client privilege or anything, but she said "this is off the record". How much more explicit is it supposed to be than that? She got betrayed. It was a dumb gaffe, if you don't want something to get out, don't tell a reporter, but she got betrayed.

18. There was nothing racist in what Geraldine said.
Do YOU think that the Obama "movement" would be possible if he was an average white politician?
It doesn't take anything away from Obama's ability to campaign.... it just points out that others have that ability too and are not given the opportunity.

22. Obama isn't an average white politician
The last time we saw a white politician with charisma and skill was in 1992. He went on to spend 8 prosperous years in the white house. Obama is even more spellbinding than Bill, who I will never disparage. You'd have to take a lot more away from Obama than his skin color to stop me from supporting him. It would be as unfair to blow him off as a speech-making black man as it would be to blow off Hillary as a shrill woman.

and didn't Edwards run for President after only having been in the Senate for 2 years??? And wasn't that his only experience in elected office???

And nobody shooed him away. He ended up in the VP position!

and Biden certainly has more experience.
Obama hasn't done anything besides speechify and offer a few vanity bills in the senate.

38. It's not often that you find a Dem arguing for strict constructionism
I think that more constitutional vagueness helps us greatly in this circumstance. Since the VP's constitutional duties are limited to being president of the senate and counting and presenting ballots from the electoral college, we have a pretty open slate to work with. There aren't any constitutional powers enumerated for the Chief of Staff or the National Security Advisor either.
