By Ronald Brownstein, Times Staff Writer

WASHINGTON — Republicans opened a potentially significant new front Thursday in their battle with Democrat John F. Kerry, launching their first broad assault against his views on abortion, gun control, gay marriage, the death penalty and other social issues.

Since Kerry effectively clinched his party's presidential nomination in early March, President Bush's campaign and the Republican National Committee have challenged him almost entirely over his record on taxes and national defense.

1. Yes I know Brownstein is a puke
:puke:

Don't bother pointing that out.

I enjoyed watching him trying to trip up Kerry in the debates, and Kerry kicking his ass.

9. Come on!?! Please no South bashing... If the Dems really cared
They could rather easily be able to form a coalition of moderate women voters, African American voters, hispanic voters (larger and larger numbers in the old South), ex-pat yankee (people are still moving to the Sunbelt folks) and liberal white (we exist I promise).

Also, this coalition would be a lot easier to form and hold than any plan to try and win the midwest. Plus it would provide a much greater moral victory of the racist rednecks that everyone in the South gets lumped in with.

Think between the Bubbas and the fundies that this is impossible?

That is crap. Dems lose by much smaller margins in the South than any other region dominated by Repukes.

Think about it, really.

Lets stop being reactionary.

16. If it were that easy, we'd have already done it...
Unfortunately it's very hard to bring liberal ideals to a place that has always been fairly conservative. And now the Republicans are considered the "conservative" party and the democrats have been labeled as the "radical left". Louisiana is a good example of about the best we can do. It's the only southern state where we sill have maintained the traditional conservative southern democratic administration (a lot of words, I know). All of the state offices (except sec of state) are dems, both senators are dems, and both houses of the legislature are dem controlled. The congressional delegation is 4 Republicans 3 democrats but that could change next election, and could change even more if we decide to redistrict. Point being that Mary Landrieu is probably the most liberal politician to win a state-wide election and she is considered moderate by national standards. Bush will probably win here even if it's by a small margain. The point is that we never really lost Louisiana to the Republicans like we did most of the other deep southern states. Toppling those Republican controlled establishments would be extremely difficult considering we can barely keep control of the one state that we have.

6. Clever Pubs we up against. The real issues are not those they
Edited on Fri Apr-16-04 08:23 PM by opihimoimoi
propose. Its way beyond that.

They dictate the issues to their advatage in a way close to brain washing.

No, the real issues are Jobs, the Nations economy, Health care, real education for all, etc etc

and last, our future for us and our children, our environment, energy, waste, pollution, etc

These are not exciting but its all good. That the Pubs are selfish people, they shy away from the real issues and go for the bogus stuff. Very clever.

8. But where does Kerry stand on school segregation?
Nullification? Secession? The poll tax? And other issues important to Southerners?

If the GOP wants to caricature the South, they're doing a damn good job.

10. I'm in the South from the South
and I find the GOP tactics insulting and it's part of why I will never ever vote for a Republican! They think all Southerners are stupid I find this insulting as hell they don't know about my values nor do they know about a lot of my southern friends values! How dare they play to the lowest common denominator in people that's what I despise about those people!
If they looked at our maps they would see we aren't solid red the state I live in turns a purple color due to our blue and red mix.
Bwahh! haa! haa! neither one of my parent's are going to vote for * this time around. I say keep on running right wingers and see where it gets you Republicans!
I am against every one of the things they are for except gun control and that's only because there are Republicans! I don't trust Republicans they'd be the first to take guns away if they thought they could get away with it. I don't trust any of them I despise those stupid stupid people! AND my favorite radio talk show host Mike Malloy is from the South too! AHHHH, have I mentioned that I hate these people!
