Since the Washington state caucuses on 2/9/08, I have called my two WA state senators, Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray a couple of times and asked: Since the state went for Obama 68% to 32%, will they as Super Delegates switch their endorsement to Barack and honor the overwhelming will of their electorate?
Both senators have endorsed Hillary.
The standard answer from assistants in both the legislative and campaign offices was: good question - we will get back to you.
Well, last week I finally had a productive talk with a staffer and this person said Maria was close to Barack (she liked his politics) and planned to wait until all the primaries were over to do anything "official". Then if the pledged delegates and popular vote were still in Obama's favor, this staffer said they anticipated Maria switching to Obama in short order AFTER the last primary. Maria (according to this person) has heard from many people regarding this very question and understands the implications.
This person went on to say that the party absolutely does NOT want a convention fight!
Sorry, no link to back this info up and the staffer did not want me to quote him/her directly - hence the poor use of pronouns in this post. Guess it falls into the unsubstantiated rumor category. Y'all will just have to take my word for it (or not). :hi:
My assumption is barring a surprise Obama upset in PA, it looks like we will have to wait till early June - but if what I heard about Maria is true, maybe we can expect that would be the time when the lion's share of SD's will say enough is enough, we are ending this thing! I'm also assuming other SD's are following the same logic.
We need a couple of months to rest, recover, and unify before the summer convention in Denver.
