Obama readies speech on race

By Mike Dorning

Tribune correspondent

8:28 PM CDT, March 17, 2008

MONACA, Pa.

Sen. Barack Obama, confronting ongoing questions about inflammatory sermons delivered by his former pastor, announced Monday he will deliver a "major address" on race and politics in Philadelphia on Tuesday in an attempt to move beyond the controversy.<snip>

After performing well with white voters in early contests and winning over white voters in high-profile primaries in Wisconsin and Virginia, Obama has recently faltered with white voters, particularly the white working-class voters who are a core constituency of the Democratic Party.<snip>

In an interview with PBS's "NewsHour" on Monday, Obama suggested that Wright's tone in speaking of white America was partly a generational difference borne out of the bitter experiences of discrimination in an earlier era.

"When you look at somebody like a Rev. Wright who grew up in the '50s or '60s, his experience of race in this country is very different than mine," Obama said in the PBS interview.

"We benefit from the difficult battles that were place," Obama continued. "But I'm not sure that we benefit from continuing to perpetuate the anger and the bitterness that I think, at this point, serves to divide rather than bring us together."<snip>

1. Do you think . . .
that BO's memory failed him and now all of a sudden he is remembering what JW said and now he's understanding why he said it and is going to make excuses for it? If race relations in this country are ever going to move forward, this type of language must stop on both sides. Divisiveness must end. I'll never forget how prophetic Rodney King was in the LA riots! "Can't we all just get along?"

Change his religion. From you are saying, Kerry was kicked out of his church, nor was Kerry called upon to denounce the Catholic church's many views regarding Jews and/or abortion. It is a double standard that I would like Obama to point out, but I am sure that he won't.

27. Last time I checked . . .
the Pope wasn't angry and suggesting that those in the church sing "GD America" either. I also don't think that a church that has a majority of it's parishoners in third world countries espouses racist remarks. Racism is racism no matter what race it is direct towards. You can't just say that racist remarks are only directed at AA.

Was started in the Catholic church.

Interesting, no? Liberation Theology, which became Black Liberation Theology, is from Catholic, not Protestant, beginnings.

Hannity would have known this, had he anything more than a High-school education in Theology.

You mean UCC? TUCC?

One thing I like about TUCC is their goal of bringing the UCC message to folks who got tired of, well, how do I put this..... "waiting for God to help them", or "waiting for the nice <whatever> folks to help them".

A god who doesn't love and forgive a cruel slave-master equally as the enslaved, well,... that's what seems to be freaking out the entitled white folks, when they have to hear that their racism and classicism and social injustice is, well, a sin. :)

And that’s part of what makes America so special. And so, to the extent that, you know, the conversation
over the last couple of days has been dominated by some stupid statements that were made by Reverend Wright,
but also caricatures of Reverend Wright and Trinity United Church of Christ – which, by the way, is part of a
denomination that is overwhelmingly white – you know,
I think that that has distracted us from the possibilities
of moving beyond some of these arguments.

67. Many people think religion is a person's own PRIVATE concern.
To be bullying and bribing or even just trying to influence others' spirituality trespasses upon their God given Freedom to decide for themselves, just as our Lord and Teacher Jesus Christ showed us, to decide for ourselves (independent of church and state) what is right and what is wrong, yes even up to and including your right to go to hell if that's what you choose.

heart and soul, since he was a child, because he disagrees with one of its leaders?

By this standard, I should leave my family which has many military people in it - and - all of us should shop for our churches like we do for comfortable shoes and pleasing food. Maybe THIS is the problem with U.S. Maybe THIS is how we came to kill and to be an accessory in killing nearly a million Iraqis.

Maybe, as MO alluded to in her thesis, all of us need a "hair shirt" like pastor Wright to remind of us of things that are oh so much more comfortable to forget.

I am personally repulsed by what amounts to blasphemy = claiming the ability to describe another individual's true essence, mind and heart, someone I have never met and have no personal experience of, let alone experiences of the variety, length and duration that MIGHT qualify me to say some sort of small minor truth about the person, let alone the major psychological absolutes that people are throwing around about both Obama and HC.

the only person of color on DU. I'll say it again, there's a big difference between and endorsement and a Pastor. As far as JFK is concerned, I don't think as a Catholic he ever had a priest who espouse any racist or anti-American remarks from the Church. We will have to wait and see what BO says tomorrow in his speech. It should be interesting to say the least. Hope he gets some sleep tonight.
