Finally Saw The Full Speech. I Am Flat Broke But I'm Donating to Obama Right Now!!!
As someone who is an enormous fan of Cornel West, Toni Morrison, James Baldwin and Ralph Ellison, this has to be some of the most eloquent and insightful words ever committed to the subject of race in America.

The fact that someone was willing to gamble his Presidential quest in taking the issue to the next level, the speech not only spoke extremely well of Barack Obama, but also his belief in America and the American people.

In the dark days when Bush was soaring in popularity, Caroline Kennedy put out a thick volume of writings, songs and speeches by people who understood that patriotism is something far more than cheap jingoism (John Kerry's "Last Man to Die for a Mistake" speech was included, as were Springsteen lyrics and such).

Included were the words that rang out for me in 2001, when my conscience told me that the response to 9/11 was not "bomb somebody." It was the words of James Baldwin, who said "I love America more than any other country in this world, and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually."

In 2004, Kerry repeatedly said that patriotism means when something is broke, you fix it, you don't wish it away.

This is my kind of realism - a term normally used to masquerade cheaply bought cynicism.

This kind of realism is undergirded by hope, which I believe is the realism of every great writer, every great thinker, every great American.

Hope, as Cornel West taught me, is not mere optimism, as in "I think it'll work itself out." It is profound and active and positive and flows through every major change that ever came to the world.

Which is why I am fired up today! Yes we can! Yes we can! Yes we can!!!

2. My country right or wrong, but when it's wrong MAKE IT RIGHT.
Those are Kerry's words and they will always be true for a citizen who takes their duties responsibly.

I'm donating tomorrow when I SEE OBAMA. heh

14. I Fully Intend to Show The Speech to My Family and Friends
When was the last time we had someone discussing race in a real way that gets beyond Don Imus, Farrakhan, Sista Souljah, and OJ Simpson?

I also love that he points out that people losing jobs wrongly blame illegal immigrants and welfare mothers.

9. Your piece has Fired me up, too, Dr
Funk! Thank you, I'll be saving this to read to my son who called me tonight from Kauai, for support. He's been watching too much cnn and is disheartened by what "they are doing to Obama". I gave him uplifting comments on the Speech and told him to not let the Bastids get 'im down.

No doubt there are many who feel like us who want to support him from a far with our money no matter how little an amount, right now. https://donate.barackobama.com/page/contribute/ownwords1?source=20080318_HOW_F1
