Los Angeles Times: Clinton Donors Offer to Fund Michigan Do-Over
Clinton donors offer to fund Michigan do-over

The 10 would pony up $12 million for a June 3 rerun of the Democratic primary. State lawmakers must act on the proposal today.

March 20, 2008

Ten donors to Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential campaign offered Wednesday to give Michigan $12 million to hold a rerun of its Democratic primary as she and rival Barack Obama traded sharp words over the proposed June 3 contest.

With state lawmakers facing a deadline today for approval of the plan, Clinton made a quick stop Wednesday in Detroit, where she called on Obama to endorse the do-over election. "Sen. Obama speaks passionately on the campaign trail about empowering the American people," she said. "Today I'm urging him to match those words with action."

For his part, Obama called Clinton "completely disingenuous" in pushing for reruns of Michigan and Florida primaries that occurred in January. In a CNN interview, the Illinois senator recalled Clinton's statement last fall that Michigan's primary was "not going to count for anything."

"Then, as soon as she got into trouble politically, and it looked like she would have no prospects of winning the nomination without having count, suddenly she's extraordinarily concerned with the voters there," Obama told CNN. "I understand the politics of it, but let's be clear that it's politics."

Clinton supporters in Michigan concede that state lawmakers are unlikely to authorize the proposed June 3 primary by today's deadline.

Nonetheless, Democratic Govs. Edward G. Rendell of Pennsylvania and Jon Corzine of New Jersey on Wednesday gave Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm a list of 10 people who would guarantee the state up to $12 million in donations to hold the election. All three governors support Clinton, and the 10 offering to pay for the election are all donors to the New York senator's campaign.

The group includes Los Angeles investor Haim Saban; Fred Eychaner, a Chicago contributor who made his fortune in TV and radio; and three attorneys: Peter G. Angelos, who owns the Baltimore Orioles baseball team; John Eddie Williams Jr. of Houston; and Calvin C. Fayard Jr. of Louisiana.

Others signatories include New Yorkers Bernard L. Schwartz, former chairman of the satellite communications firm Loral Space and Communications; former Clinton administration Treasury official Roger Altman of the private equity firm Evercore; and John Catsimatidis, whose business interests include real estate and oil.

19. that is a bullshit argument that i find offensive. i am originally from MI and
my family is HORRIFIED that in perhaps the most important election in our nations history, their votes dont count. Who do they blame? Yes, the state reps, but they also blame Obama and the DNC, and so do all their friends.

Is that "good for the party"? no, it is a friggin disaster.

22. Why didn't you get up and say something about it before they moved the primary date up? Why weren't
you HORRIFIED when Hillary AND Obama AND the other candidates agreed to abide by the rules set by the party?

Why aren't you HORRIFIED that BOTH candidates were unable to reach a compromise? Hillary said NO to a caucus. Obama said NO to a primary that wouldn't allow ALL democrats to vote.

Yeah, it a friggin disaster, but you and your family have some serious misplaced anger issues that are rooted in ignorance.

24. So now it's all Obama's fault?
Why didn't they speak up when their state reps decided to break the rules & move the primary up? :eyes:

God, this is getting old.

4. BO = just another politician?
When I see this: "Obama called Clinton "completely disingenuous" in pushing for reruns of Michigan and Florida primaries," it makes me think, well, he doesn't want to see all the votes counted, does he? Hey, I know this isn't a democracy, but wouldn't it be nice if we tried to make it one?

8. Hillary is not interested in counting our votes in FL, MI, but in increasing her popular vote total.
And that is completely and totally disingenuous.

10. This isn't the general election!
The voters of those states are not being disenfranchised. Those states violated party rules, so the party told them their opinions would not be sought when the party chooses it's candidate. PERIOD. They will still retain the right to vote in the general election, so they have not been disenfranchised. The fact of the matter is, the party chooses who gets to vote in their primaries and caucuses...it is not a RIGHT to get to help pick the party nominee.

Obama is sticking to the rules of the game, rather than trying to change them mid-stream. This is just more Clinton bullshit, and some people seem to be buying it hook, line, and sinker.

fault. DNC told them their votes would be stripped if they went ahead and had the Janury 29th primary, and they chose to ignore the DNC's admonition.

Harwood thinks there will be a compromise between the candidates--somewhere between a net zero and nineteen--which would be half the delegates Clinton won in the January 29th primary.

Harwood also pointed out that Republicans voted in greater numbers than Democrats in our primary--1.9 million to 1.7 million--a record turnout, but not the pattern in most other states where Demodcratic turnout far exceeded Republican turnout.

In fact, there is a study which shows that two million more people would have voted in our January 29th primary, if they knew it would count...

Disenfranchising Non-voters in FL

If Hillary Clinton got her way and Michigan and Florida had their rogue primaries counted, would voters still be disenfranchised. That's what Wharton professor Gregory P. Nini and journalist Glenn Hurowitz conclude in a study that concludes an additional 1.15 million Florida voters and 715,000 Michigan voters would have voted in January if they thought the results would matter.

13. IMO, the consideration is for....
...those who did NOT vote because they were told their votes would not count. Why do you wish to see those people disenfranchized? You have something against people who followed the rules? Why should those who did the right thing get fucked over by those who did not follow the rules.

Seems like and odd value system to me....just sayin'....

5. Yeah, whenever the interest is so lopsided, you know who it's supposed to benefit--
Obama should not agree to anything that isn't fair, in terms of a re-vote. The fact that the Dems who crossed over to vote with the R's can't re-vote, and yet R's who didn't vote can cross over (the Limbaugh Effect) means Obama will already start with a handicap.

Edited on Thu Mar-20-08 08:32 AM by powergirl
yeah, that will be fair. That's the ticket. This also demonstrates that the Clinton Supporters (who want to pay for this gig) are the "Sugar Daddies" of the Democratic party. (Some guy on the David Gregory show said this). Obama with his fund raising relies primarily on regular folks, i.e. voters. Imagine that!

14. I remember a time when there were hanging chads
and even though the intent of the voters was obvious, they were ignored because of a "technicality". Our side argued that the most important thing was for the votes to count as intended. The other side argued that rules are rules.

How'd that turn out?

Your argument is specious.

I never said the DNC stopped the Florida recounts, I said "the other side argued". The "other side" is Republicans, remember?
