$1bn price tag on White House race
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2004/05/05/wus05.xml&sSheet=/portal/2004/05/05/ixportaltop.html&secureRefresh=true&_requestid=214580

The American presidential election is on course to become the first billion-dollar race as donations pour in from avid supporters and opponents of President George W Bush.

Mr Bush and his challenger, Senator John Kerry, have secured 700,000 more donors than contributed to the 2000 campaign, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Donations for the two men, and Mr Kerry's defeated Democratic rivals, have already reached $400 million (£225 million), more than double the amount at this time in the last campaign. Taken with the money spent by political parties, state party organisations, independent groups, conventions and the candidates themselves, the total is predicted to be $1 billion (£560 million) or more.

Many donations are from first-time contributors inspired by passion for or hatred of Mr Bush.

1. Did my part

put my money where my mouth is... $1000 for Kerry. Hopefully another
$1000 by mid summer. Must remove Bush from office, no matter what
else.

3. How could I face myself

next November (or December if it ends up at SCOTUS again) and
* is re-selected. I started "hating" republicans when Clinton
was impeached... now I loath them. So even though I'm currently
unemployed (and I haven't filed for any handouts), and my savings
are dwindling, I feel that we must ALL give till it hurts... unless
we simply enjoy whining about the way things are and how evil
these bastards are and so on. I hope that I'm not even posting
on DU in 7 months. I want the election to put both the presidency
and the senate back in Democratic control... with a shot at retaking
the house in 2 years. And with Kerry in, a more sane SCOTUS within
the 8 years of his presidency.

So, we all must pitch in, use whatever means you have, sell something
you own or put yourself in debt (after all, it will be LESS debt than
you individually will be in if * gets another 4 years to run up the
debt). Money buys TV ads. TV buy votes. Most people believe
all of the crap thats put out there. There is no "truth squad" in
journalism anymore... cable news is wholly owned by Bushco. Kerry
needs to outspend * by 1.5 times just to counteract the smear
campaign. Send whatever you can, volunteer to knock on doors, get
people to register, and remind them to vote on election day. If
75 percent of eligible voters register and vote on election day, I
have no fear (other than BBV) of a re-selection.

4. Hey Lap!!
I have problems similar to yours. I am also unemployed and my company went belly up. But I am doing what little I can to get Bush out of office. Up until this election, I have never been politically active. But enough is enough. I don't even care about the fact I lost my good paying job, not about the billions of dollars that Shrub stole. In the end money is just money and it has no meaning. But lives are far more valuable. What about the 700 some odd soldiers that died for nothing, a lie over WMD? What about the thousands of innocent Iraqis killed? This administration has been the worst and I will do everything I can to fight them till the bitter end. I hope that we can be forgiven by the people that this country has brutalized. I will have no part in it.

6. Didn't mean to imply

that the reason to remove * from office is money. It is for
all the reasons that you state (AND MORE). I fear for our freedoms
and our republic if * wins another term. The so-called patriot
act is just the start. Not to mention that they will take the war
on the road to the next "pre-emptive action" area of interest.

Worst Presidency Ever doesn't even scratch the surface of this gang
that is doing. Read Worse than Watergate... House of Bush / House of
Saud and a list of other books to see how evil these bastards are.
Words fail.

The debt analysis (my personal debt for contributions to Kerry
compared to future debt from a second Bush term) was simply to
point out that it's in our SELF INTEREST to contribute the max
amount to Kerry.
