Hillary's Harrowing Trip to Bosnia
or . . . maybe not so much.

"I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base."
--Hillary Clinton, speech at George Washington University, March 17, 2008.

"Far from running to an airport building with their heads down, Clinton and her party were greeted on the tarmac by smiling U.S. and Bosnian officials. An eight-year-old Moslem girl, Emina Bicakcic, read a poem in English. An Associated Press photograph of the greeting ceremony, above, shows a smiling Clinton bending down to receive a kiss."

Why do you think Hillary is ducking her head in that photo? See how happy the little girl is to have the First Lady of the united states protecting her.

11. Sinbad: Toughest decision on trip “Do we eat here or at the next place?”
Clinton has said the trip was harrowing, and has recalled landing under sniper fire. Sinbad said it involved no greater decision-making skills than “Do we eat here or at the next place?” according to an interview with the Washington Post.

And Sinbad's comments still make me laugh.

"I think the only 'red-phone' moment was: 'Do we eat here or at the next place.'" Sinbad questioned the premise behind the Clinton version of events. "What kind of president would say 'Hey man, I can't go 'cause I might get shot so I'm going to send my wife. Oh, and take a guitar player and a comedian with you."

14. Funny, because it's debunked in the story
Lissa Muscatine, who served as Hilary Clinton's chief speechwriter in 1996 and accompanied her on the Bosnia trip, feels that I have failed to provide a full picture of what took place. She gave me her "vivid recollections" of the arrival in Tuzla, which I quote below:

I was on the plane with then First Lady Hillary Clinton for the trip from Germany into Bosnia in 1996. We were put on a C17-- a plane capable of steep ascents and descents -- precisely because we were flying into what was considered a combat zone. We were issued flak jackets for the final leg because of possible sniper fire near Tuzla. As an additional precaution, the First Lady and Chelsea were moved to the armored cockpit for the descent into Tuzla. We were told that a welcoming ceremony on the tarmac might be canceled because of sniper fire in the hills surrounding the air strip. From Tuzla, Hillary flew to two outposts in Bosnia with gunships escorting her helicopter.

29. That could mean sniper fire in the area
or the threat of sniper fire, corroborated here by Lissa Muscatine:

"We were told that a welcoming ceremony on the tarmac might be canceled because of sniper fire in the hills surrounding the air strip."

It's just a non-story.

20. Too bad she forgot to remind Hillary of the facts Monday's speech.
I think Hillary just let herself get a little bit carried away, but this Bosnian trip and her somewhat dramatic recollections of it are turning into a Dukakis moment.

37. This was whe Starr was beginning his whitewater investigation...maybe it was metaphorical
Seriously...I can understand her having bad memories of that time and feeling under attack. Myabe she just mixed up the politics of the time with the war zone thing and let slip something about her feelings rather than the strict facts. She's human. On the other hand, when you're giving a lecture about military decision-making and so on, it might be better to stick to very unemotional situations rather than dramatic ones.

22. Um, no. That in no way debunks Clinton's lie.
Clinton claimed they were "under sniper fire" and they had to run to cover.

When Clinton claims she was running for cover from sniper fire, she was actually being greeted on the tarmac by a little girl.

Nice spin but it's not working.

LOL at the speech writer's idiotic assertion about the danger they were facing. Does Hillary have a flak jacket on in the picture? Does the little girl? They were flying on a C-17 because that is what flew into Tuzla EVERY DAY. It was not some special precaution.

42. "vivid recollections"
of what was considered a combat zone, possible sniper fire, a ceremony that might be canceled.

In other words, she has vivid recollections of nothing that actually happened.

If it was really that dangerous, what kind of mother is Hillary to take her young daughter there? :wow:

Yesterday, I drove my car - made of metal & equipped with a rollbar, precisely because there is the ever-present possibility of an accident. As an extra precaution, I strapped myself in with not only a seat belt, but also a shoulder harness! Because of the heightened threat of head-on collisions, my car is equipped with an airbag. I warned my mother I might be in danger because there was an accident somewhere nearby. I do this EVERY DAY. I'm so brave!
