A wee commentary on Obama's appeal.
My grandfather is a lifelong Democrat. He also is a man who does not get excited about anything. Blame it on his Scots-Irish ancestry, his being raised by a Presbyterian preacher father, whatever. Grandpa Bill does not get excited about anything.

Except Barack Obama. He went out and bought, ahead of the Illinois priamry, both of Sen. Obama's books, and told my mom (his oldest, andif we're being honet, favorite daughter) to get me to read them, because he felt that Obama was going to be the politician of his generation.

Now, Grandpa Bill is Obama's "typical" white guy - liberal, votes democratic, generally a good guy, but was still raised in a sundown town, still harbors a deep distrust (from stories, monuments, a general sense of resentment) of hist black fellow citizens) - he's excited about Barack Obama. That's a mighty hopeful thing. If Obama can get a 70-odd year old man, who was raised in Bloody Williamson Co, Illinois, he can flip anyone.

1. Obama's first book was truly excellent.....
after reading it, one would believe they knew the man.

There's an excellent video from today in the DU Political Video Forum that was just posted.....Obama's interview with Mail Tribune Editorial page editor (an Oregon paper)--

I found it very interesting. Talks about Medical Marijuana and Euthenasia among other issues.

Thank you for your story!

9. I'm an Obama supporter for numerous reasons, but I fear he will fail to win.
.
.
.

Obama may not be the best thing for the USA, but he's the ONLY one in the Presidential race that may effect change.

Barack is new; untainted by the Clinton or Bush Administrations.

It's time to take a chance.

It's time for change.

12. Unfortunately, I have to agree with you
This country needs him badly, but I think Hillary's spite, and hatefulness for Barack will damage him and the party for years to come, just because "It was her turn" and she was "entitled".

10. be very careful of your terminology..
when you call your grandfather a 'typical white guy.'

If you throw your grandparent under the bus,
Sean Hannity and Joe Scarborough blast you for hours
for a week..

11. Grandpa's a 6'8" fella who was in the Army
Chopped his own wood, etc. I'd be more afraid for the bus.

13. Your grandpa sounds like a trip... LOL
My mother will be 78 this year and I always chuckle at that generation. They were children during the depression, teens during WW II, served in the Korean War, and many produced what would be the peak of bell curve of the infamous baby boom generation (the peak being babies born in the '50s). Yet I always tell my mom how rebellious her generation was - although they were always highly disciplined and kept just so.... rarely overtly displaying their radicalism. But it comes out during the oddest times..

14. I think they tend to get overshadowed by the "Greatest Generation."
They did their bit, though, and I think we're better for it. My family, I know, would be much different if my grandparents on both sides hadn't seen the war from the homefront, and then gone on to try and make a career during the red scare and raise their kids during the 60's. I agree with you, they're a quieter bunch, but always a blast when the stories eventually bubble out.
