More Ohioans vote Democrat in primary
COLUMBUS | This year, 214,000 more Ohioans voted in the Democratic presidential primary than in 2000, giving Ohio Democrats a treasure trove of prospective voters to contact for the November election.

Some not swallowing tailgater proposal
Democrats statewide are working to identify these voters, log them into databases and contact them as the campaign unfolds.

Observers say two factors drove the 22 percent jump in Democratic voters: Democratic Sens. John Kerry of Massachusetts and John Edwards of North Carolina were still actively campaigning by March 2 and President Bush has a way of motivating Democrats to get to the polls.

In Montgomery County, Democratic Chairman Dennis Lieberman said March 2 was the party's first major primary the county had seen in 12 years. The county party picked up 6,842 Democratic voters, a 15 percent increase over four years ago.

How many are likely Democratic votes in the fall, however, is an open question.

A good portion of the increase are cross-over voters, officials say, people who normally vote Republican or who voted Republican in the last primary.

4. Primary results should be seen as a barometer for the general election.

This is good news indeed. I'll bet they'll be at least a 25% increase above the primary # for the actual election. This should tell everyone that the Democratic electorate is motivated like at no time in the past to rid ourselves of this boy-king.

6. However,
a lot of Montgomery County Repukes didn't vote in the primaries because (as they told me) they had nothing to vote for.

Whatever.

7. It is good news in part
but our primary moved from May to March which made it much more important. Much of the increase is likely from that. Also we had an Ohioan on the ballot who almost certainly drove up turnout in his district which is one of the most Democratic in the state.

5. Hooray!
I voted a straight Dem ticket in the primary (but then, I always do). I'm convinced that if I go to hell it'll be because I once voted for a Repuke (it was Nelson Rockefeller who acted like a Dem).

There are very few Dems where I live and I love to see the confused expressions on the poll workers' faces when I proudly say "I'm a Democrat."

This is good news, but we have a lot of work to do to ensure that this also happens in November's election.
