So, are we about done yet with all the "movement" threads?
Am I happy about Kerry being the nominee? Sure, I guess. He's not my first choice, but he was in my top three. Do I hope that he shows some courage, and takes some liberal stands during the campaign, and does not back down from them? Hell yes! It will only make it THAT much easier to vote for him in November-- which I plan on doing! I also intend to hold his feet to the fire on November 3, when he starts putting his plans and leadership together, so that we can enact some real change in this country in the next four years.
The Democratic party has always been a coalition party-- which is the best we can do in a system designed for only two competing parties. We've always had social conservatives and liberals, and even economic moderates and liberals, in the party. We've always had our differences, but we've been able to put those aside and come together at the right times to get our candidates elected, and our agenda passed.
Am I happy with the corporatist drift the party has taken in the last twelve years? ABSOLUTELY NOT. However, instead of "dumping" the corporatist-enablers, I'd rather show them the wisdom of a truly progressive economy, where "the little guy" has protection from the whims of the giant corporations that currently control the economy.
Sure, a little good-natured ribbing and friendly debate is a good thing, but it can cross the line and get a little too heated at times. Maybe everybody needs to go back to their corners for a while and come back tomorrow and resume the "debate".
I think I'll do the same-- and do something about that "other" movement too.
