The Registration Deadline in Pennsylvania has Passed.
Thank God!

I was at the Obama headquarters in Philly as the last forms rolled out tonight around 11:00PM. The numbers for new registrations/switched parties in Philly are simply unbelievable. We're talking TENS of THOUSANDS of new Democrats in this city alone. And that's only counting the ones registered by the campaign itself. We took the campaign's goals and just shattered them!

I, for one, never want to see another voter registration form in my life (well, at least until this fall, that is ;)). They are evil forms with tricky questions like "what's your municipality"? Do you know how few people know what their municipality is?

Fortunately, all the people I registered who had mistakes/omissions on their forms either called or e-mailed me back so I could correct them. None of "my people" will be left out. For that I am extremely grateful.

Now I sleep. And for the first night in a long while, I'll sleep without dreaming about registering voters.

Thank God this deadline has passed.

7. Lol! Not in Philly, my friend.
This city is about as blue as you can get. Almost all new registrations here, with a few Indies picking sides.

Out of the hundreds of folks I registered, only 1 or 2 were Republicans switching over. And I also registered about a dozen either Indies + Republicans. All the rest were Dems, Dems and more Dems.

9. That will be a problem in PA. But not in Philly.
This city is true blue. Basically, as a city, we're trying to off-set all of the Clinton-voting dittoheads across the rest of the state.

12. I'm sure it is happening in McKean in NW PA
they are Repugs through and through and yet the local newspaper had a story saying how many were registering/switching (and they used that word) to Democrat. It was a very disproportional amount and was shortly after Ohio....

In one town there, half the town works for two factories. They are "forced" to listen to Limbaugh for 3 hours a day.....

16. Go Kristi! Read your email

My cousin from Philly is saying the same thing.

He has lived in Philly for years and he said he has never seen so many young volunteers working to Register voters.

He said the other candidate and Rendell are doing any and every dirty thing to win.

Come on PA!

10. In Central PA We Targeted Voters Off Of Independent Voter Lists...
Also a lot of canvassing. I'd guess the dittohead switches are miniscule.

Wow. That's encouraging.
I had been hearing some rather scary reports in the local media coming out of the surrounding counties. Board of Election officials talking about how many people are telling them they're switching parties just to vote for the weaker candidate vs. McCain. Election officials! Um hello, that's not *technically* allowed, so why the hell do they still allow them to register?

Unreal.

13. at least one of them is a former crossover voter
I talked an Obama-supporting coworker into switching from Republican to Democratic. He was registered Republican in order to vote defensively, i.e., to vote for the most moderate candidate. He likes to joke about being a Reagan Republican, in that he first registered Republican to vote against Reagan.

11. thank you so much for your work
it means alot.

Obama knows how to expand the electorate, as you well know.

Instead of being a corporate lawyer - which he easily could have done,
he went to work for Project Vote, an organization that protects voters rights.

Thank you so much for registering people to vote.

14. Good on you Kristi!
My entire family is voting for Obama in the primaries, and for every one that is voting (absentee or otherwise) they are bringing along OTHER voters for Obama. Hillary will not win by the huge margins she is dreaming of -- not this time.

17. I'd be surprised if that many voters switched for "dirty tricks" purposes
Many voters, especially older ones, in the Philadelphia suburbs, were registered as Republicans because frankly until recently Democrats did not get elected to local offices. So the Republican primary was the equivalent of the general election for any office other than state and national races.

This has been less and less the case in recent years; especially closer to the city. But where I am, there has been a vast Republican registration advantage for years, even though the area has voted for Gore and Bush by slight margins in the last 2 Presidential contests.

And we have a fairly solid Democratic Congressional seat as well.

But for state House, state Senate, school board, county commissioners, etc... all of these minor offices seem to be unattainable for local Democrats.

So not all "Crossover" registrations are dittoheads trying to mess up the vote - in many cases these are people who have a history of voting for Democrats for Congress, Senate, President and for the first time found a reason to take the effort to register and weigh in on the Democratic primaries.

I am not however convinced that these are primarily Obama voters, however.

I am convinced that the key to winning PA for Obama is not a registration drive.

The key to winning PA, as I've stated here before, is cutting into Hillary's margins among senior citizen voters.
