CBS News segment on Hillary's Bosnia Lies
Edited on Tue Mar-25-08 11:16 PM by blonndee
I get the feeling that many of us mostly watch cable news, so I've been looking at the major news networks to see what "legs" this story may have gotten so far and what's on their front pages. I already posted a transcript from NBC Nightly News. Here is the video (pretty harsh) and some text that I found interesting from CBS.

Video transcript from CBS News(done by me as accurately as possible, please forgive any typos):

We're beginning with a follow-up to a story Sheryl Attkisson reported here last night. She showed us video that directly contradicted Hillary Clinton's account of the danger she faced on a 1996 visit to Bosnia. Since our broadcast, that video has spread all over the internet. It was the most-viewed video of the day on Youtube, with more than a million hits. And today, Senator Clinton admitted, quote, "I made a mistake." But it wasn't the only one, as Sheryl shows us tonight.

(voice-over, Sheryl Attkisson)

Hillary Clinton's attempt to tout her foreign policy experience hounded her again on the campaign trail today.

<Clip from Clinton presser today>

She claims she misspoke last week, and was sleep-deprived when she described the landing under sniper fire in Tuzla, Bosnia, something that didn't happen. But CBS News has found several times in the past few months when Senator Clinton used the Bosnia trip to try to show her international experience.

December, in Iowa...

<clip from Clinton in Iowa. "You know, we landed in one of those corkscrew landings and ran out because they said there might be sniper fire. I don't remember anybody offering me tea on the tarmac when that was happening.">

Then in February...

<clip from Clinton: "The welcoming ceremony had to be moved inside because of sniper fire.">

And last week...

<clip from last week: "I remember landing under sniper fire...We basically were told to run to our cars. Now that is what happened.">

After CBS News video showed what really happened when she landed and greeted officials, Senator Clinton maintained there were risks, but explained to the Philadelphia Daily News why she was seen on the Bosnian tarmac greeting a young child, if it was really so dangerous.

<clip from Clinton: "I was also told that the greeting ceremony had been moved...away from the...uh, tarmac. But that there was this eight-year-old girl, and I said, 'Well, I have-I can't-I can't rush by her, I've got to at least greet her. So I greeted her, I took her stuff, and I left. Now that's my memory of it.>

<Clip of Clinton on the tarmac shaking hands with soldiers>

Once again, her memory doesn't match our videotape.

<Continued clip of Clinton on the tarmac shaking hands with soldiers>

She and her daughter Chelsea lingered on the tarmac to greet U.S. military officials, took photos...There was the group of seventh graders on the tarmac, too. And then Senator Clinton walked to the armored vehicle, where she did, eventually, duck and enter.

<clip shows Clinton ducking her head as she enters an armored vehicle.>

Senator Clinton hinted today that her own staff has been suggesting to her that the events weren't quite as dramatic as she had suggested. Her staff also sent out an email to reporters today with a list of supposed inconsistencies in what Senator Obama has said and done. Harry?

Harry ? (CBS newscaster): In the end, doesn't this really come down to a matter of 'can you trust what she says?'

SA: I think so. I think one reason that political observers think this is so important is that Hillary Clinton has, of course, made experience her issue in this campaign, saying she's the one that's best suited to answer that three in the morning phone call.

From article on website:

New CBS Video Contradicts Clinton Again
Admits She Misspoke About 1996 Bosnia Trip; Mentioned It In Iowa, Texas And Also Last Week

March 25, 2008

(CBS/AP)

<snip>
In a recent speech and interviews, the New York senator described a harrowing scene in Tuzla, Bosnia, in which she and her daughter, Chelsea, had to run for cover as soon as they landed for a visit in 1996. But video footage of the day showed a peaceful reception in which a young girl greeted the first lady on the tarmac.

<snip>

She claimed she misspoke and was sleep deprived,but CBS News has found several times in the past few months Senator Clinton used the Bosnia trip to try to show her international experience, reports Sharyl Attkisson. Clinton did so in Iowa in December, Texas in February and also last week.

<snip>

"I was also told that the greeting ceremony had been moved away from the tarmac but that there was this eight-year-old girl and I said, 'Well, I, I can't, I can't rush by her, I've got to at least greet her,'' Clinton said. "So I greeted her, I took her stuff and I left. Now that's my memory of it."

Once again her memory doesn't match CBS News videotape, Attkisson reports. She and her daughter Chelsea lingered on the tarmac to greet U.S. military officials, took photos, and then walked to the armored vehicle where she did, eventually, duck and enter.

1. If we want someone with a faulty memory
we can go with mccain who hilary likes for his experience and bil likes for his love of country.

Thanks so much blondee, for this report from CBS who more Americans watch than cable, I think.

2. Yeah they're gonna let that little girl run out there amid the sniper fire
It's beginning to look as if this sniper bullshit isn't going away.

Perhaps Hillarity has just experienced her Macaca moment....

9. Should it matter? No. Does it matter? Yes.
Not to me personally - I have a wife and daughters, plenty of exposure to misremembrances and sufficient guilt on my own part to not throw stones. Most of the time exact accounts are less important that the quality of the narrative, in a convivial social setting.

But politics is a different world, and I know many people who shunned Kerry because he was painted a liar, fair or unfair. And Hillary's husband as well. "Joe six-pack", if he still exists, is much more concerned about whether a politician can be trusted than what the politician's pastor might be saying. I read this as fairly simple on its face - Hillary wanted to highlight her experience, and cited a plausible narrative from her first-lady adventures. Unfortunately there was contradictory video, and long after prudence would have dictated, she has to recant. To much of the country this is entirely unpresidential.
