remind me about the odd controversy during the early primaries
per Stirling Newberry... was he the guy who was bad mouthing the Draft Clark campaign... who came with accusations and during the threads was called out for having done something similar related to the Kerry campaign (something about an event and accomodations for disabled vets - but the accusations seemed not to fit the real event??)

I was poking around a couple of blogs going from linked pages - and came across his name. I remember there was a controversy - but don't remember the details. Why do I ask... seems the dude is running for congress in Missouri.

1. You're a bit confused
Stirling Newberry is primarily a blogger who was heavily involved in the Draft Clark movement but upset some of the Clarkies with his criticism of Clark's campaign team. I don't remember the thing with Kerry but as far as I know, Newberry was never involved with the Kerry campaign during the primaries (maybe you're thinking of Chris Lehane?)

Jim Newberry is the guy running for Congress: http://www.newberryforcongress.com/index.php. I'm not sure if or how he's related to Stirling (I assume he is) but he blogs on Jim's site too http://www.newberryforcongress.com/newberry_blog/index.php.

2. There was an incident, here at DU
with someone (who later I think was pointed out as being Stirling Newberrry) making harsh criticisms of the Clark campaign - he was making accusations about a particular individual ... and said was imploring people to communicate with the Clark campaign to distance themselves from the individual - and making dire warnings (ala - be ware...) for the Clark campaign if they hired that individual.

Then in that same thread - there was something brought up about an individual who was making a stink about a single Kerry campaign event that involved inviting Vietnam vets - but not making accomodations at the event (in some auditorium) for a disabled vet - and some convoluted story ensued about making false accusations about the Kerry campaign - couched in "I had been supportive until...." I don't believe there was any suggestion in the discussion that the person (Stirling?) had worked for the Kerry campaign - just that he had made an ugly scene around with accusations about a specific event (that folks claimed were untrue). I think the second item was brought up on the threads as some DUers remembered it - and were pointing out that perhaps there was a pattern.

I didn't realize that the person (Stirling) was a blogger. That item helps put things into perspective. It is interesting, however, if the person stirring up the controversy on DU that I remember is the same person. On his website he states that bitter partisan fighting is a bad thing and that he believes that compromise is important and necessary. That wouldn't quite fit his actual behavior - if he is the person I recall - who was really pushing hard to stir up some fights - using all sorts of accusations and innuendos (pointed at a particular individual associated with the Clark campaign.) Doesn't quite square with the rhetoric on his campaign website.

I am hoping that someone remembers the whole incident - and can set me straight as to whether this is the same person or not.

5. not sure about this specific thing, but
"some convoluted story ensued about making false accusations about the Kerry campaign - couched in "I had been supportive until...." "

the above was very common throughout the primary on du in regards to not just kerry but almost all the candidates. another was "did candidate x really say "fill in phrase without context to make it sound like something worse and many times total opposite of what the candidate actually meant" ?

i do remember the thing about sterling newberry and the clark campaign but i don't remember anything about him saying or doing anything regarding kerry's campaign.

4. Do you recall the 'incident'
to which I refer - am I crazy - I have no idea how far back in the archives I would have to look - it was about the time that the Draft Clark effort succeeded and the Clark campaign kicked off... Would that have been September or October?

6. It was the tipping point
Beween a draft movement and a political campaign. I didn't know Sterling, but I believe he was hurt over the transition.
