Poll indicates that Edwards puts NC in play for Kerry
"If the presidential election were held this month, North Carolinians would choose President Bush over Sen. John Kerry in large numbers - unless Sen. John Edwards was on the ticket, too, according to a new statewide poll.

Bush handily beat Kerry 48 percent to 41 percent in a Mason-Dixon poll released yesterday.

But with Edwards as Kerry's vice-presidential running mate, the race tightens to a statistical dead heat - 46 percent to 45 percent."

1. That's awesome...
I think I've finally come to the conclusion that Edwards is the guy, and not just because of this...

2. This is exactly why we cannot risk having John Edwards...
He brings nothing for sure-except the charge of being an ambulence chaser. Can you imagine the GOP ads? I can. The entire Health Care Crisis will be hung around his neck.

He has some limited appeal in an area of the country that we are not going to carry...the South.

If he were from Ohio, and had more background in government-in other words, was'nt such a lightweight-I would be all for him.

He looks so much like Bobby Kennedy, I think he should get Bobby's old job: Attorney General. Turn him lose on those scalawags in the Gop, let him do some substantive work...then someday-maybe.

3. Sounds like circular/self-defeating logic to me.
He has some limited appeal in an area of the country that we are not going to carry...the South.

So, we shouldn't even try to make inroads there?

5. Yeah, that baseless smear strategy worked SO well when he ran for Senate.
The Repugs. will probably be dumb enough to try it again--and fail.

6. Are you at all familiar with Edward's record?
First of all, Edwards was hardly an "ambulence chaser." And do you think he hasn't faced that before? The GOP is going to run ridiculous attacks ads regardless, but they aren't going to focus in on the VP. I hope they do run attack ads on the Dem's VP candidate, because that would be such a horrible waste of resources.

Now, imagine this, a charasmatic intelligent guy going against Dick Cheney in a debate. That's what the VP candidate brings to the table.

Of course we aren't going to carry the South as a region, but look at the article. It's a poll showing data that if Edwards is on the ticket, North Carolina can be won. So because we aren't going to win the entire region, we shouldn't even try to win the parts we can? That's horribly short-sighted.

Win where you can, and if one of the top candidates for VP has the potential to get a win in a relatively large state, then it's a good choice.

8. Edwards very popular in Ohio
Edwards had a lot of fans here in Northern Ohio, which is where the majority of Democratic votes from Ohio are going to come from in November. Don't underestimate the enthusiasm for him in states that are not his home state. He may not be a sure-fire bet to bring any state into the Kerry column, but he helps across the board in my opinion, meaning he could be an influential factor in many states that are nowhere near the South. Remember that Iowa is the state that first put him in the national spotlight to begin with.

9. Just Give Eddy a Hotel Room in Ohio...
...and just see what happens, true Edwards will (sadly) not be at the top of the ticket but he will have a massive impact in changing people's perceptions of Kerry and the ticket as a whole a charismatic likable moderate with populist flare against a slightly aloof and dour Liberal is the perfect match and could really help Kerry... the polls have shown that Edwards would have a huge impact on the strength of the ticket in the Midwest, steel states and even in the south (there however primarily in the senate races)... Edwards is the only VP candidate who can really boost Kerry in the regions where it counts.

Another point, Mason-Dixon are a very good firm, excellent record and a solid methodology this should be a very reliable poll. Excellent stuff... :bounce:

This guy is the only potential VP who helps Kerry just about every where, people like him and many moderates agree with and trust him... he boosts Kerry in WI, MN, IA, NC, AR, OH, PA, WV and NH!... its this simple Edwards is the only completely excellent choice for Kerry's VP!... with Mark Warner a distant second.
