KENNEBUNK — Former President George H.W. Bush pointed to an improving economy Tuesday and said the nation's financial health will help his son, President George W. Bush, win re-election. Speaking at the opening of the Kennebunk Republican office, the 41st president - who lost his bid for re-election in 1992 largely because of a faltering economy - said the issue is "what decides" American elections.
"The economy is strong," he said. "It is growing. It is very strong. Some people have yet to feel the recovery, and I understand that."
But he said that by Election Day, people will feel it - and they will re-elect the Republican president.
The office opening in Lower Village was open to anyone who cared to attend. About 100 people showed up and heard the former president and the former first lady, Barbara Bush.
