Maybe because I have been to the Lorraine Motel that top picture of Hillary waving really offends me. I had chills as we drove up and saw the sign. It is really eerie. The motel is preserved and looks exactly like it did in 1968. They even have cars from that era in the parking lot. I have been there several times and it just gives me chills every time. I cannot fathom how Hillary can go there and stand on that balcony and smile and wave like she is on display. It really repulses me.

59. That's weird
I thought they were nice pictures, and I thank you for posting them, even if you apparently did it for an opposite, somewhat murky reason. Especially that picture of her standing behind Rosa with one hand on her shoulder is very sweet; she looks great and has a pretty smile, and what's not to smile about when remembering Rosa? Thinking about Rosa's defining moment of standing her ground on that bus always brings a big, reverent smile to my face, and if the same is not true in your case I can only pity you.

There's only one picture where I can even remotely see your point, and that's the top one. It might be construed as a bit imprudent to smile coming right out the door, but I wasn't there for that moment and don't know the circumstance, so I'll refrain from passing judgment. The only other picture where she smiles is #6, where at least two African Americans are smiling with her. It looks like a nice moment of shared sentiment to me. Once again, I don't know what they were smiling about, but obviously they were quite content with doing so.

Why wasn't Obama there - OR at the Atlanta ceremony - is what I wonder. Was he so "crass" - as you put it in this thread - as to view this as a politically inexpedient setting for him to be in, since it could risk further framing him as a "black" candidate? Especially after his historic speech on race, I would have expected him to be there, and I'm disappointed with the fact that he wasn't. If anything is even remotely "appalling" here, your feigned indignation over Hillary being there - along with the fact that Obama wasn't - is it.

"Smile... you're on Candid Camera!" (Allen Funt)

We're trying to sell our home and have a contingent agreement on a smaller abode, so I'm PRETTY busy right now.

These last four days, if you had stuck a broom up my A**, I'd sweep the floor! I am a 68 year old dynamo.

Just don't look too closely at where I had to hide the things the realtor wanted out of sight (like my kitchen drain board and our garbage pail, plus my favorite blue glass collection.

I drew the line when she asked us to take down a fairly small white utility shelf next to the door going out to our garage. No way... I'll keep it empty, but I'm not taking it down.

Have a wonderful week!

Cordially,

the Obama supporters in this thread are "angry" because she "smiled at the wrong time," or she "waved at someone in the crowd that had gathered below" or she...who knows.

She was there, and she was reverent. To the people who are knocking her, context DOESN'T matter. Any chance they can take to rip on Hillary is good enough. Cheap opportunists looking through everything Clinton to find something, ANYTHING, about her to outrage them.

36. Got it. Maddy, I really have to agree with you on this.
By the way, McCain was in the Senate and voted against the MLK Holiday. He was booed for that.

I am eight years older than Hillary and remember that day so vividly. I was walking on a street in NYC and someone mentioned it. I felt like a bolt of lightning had hit me. I was two months pregnant with my daughter and wondered... what kind of a world are we living in?

How old was Hillary when that happened? I wonder what she did or might have done or said -- I believe she mentioned it on the interview with Jay Leno -- going back to her dorm room and hugging her pillow or something.

I REFUSE to believe that she does not support black people. I DO NOT feel that Hillary and Bill Clinton did not respect Martin Luther King, Jr.

Really, maybe someone smiled and waved at her -- or asked her to smile.

She looks very grave in many of the pictures.

I'm totally worn out of this conversation, but I was just thanking someone who posted some photos.

Good night and good luck.

37. If you are talking to me, your pop psychology is showing. You are the weakest link.
I've been to Israel's Holocaust site, and to Pearl Harbor, HI, and we made a special point of visiting Ground Zero in November 2001, because I lived in Manhattan for nine years in the 1960s. If I look back through the photos, they were mostly of the scene. But we did have a couple of shots of us. We weren't weeping... like Hillary did. We weren't smiling... like Hillary did.

The motel is a place of remembrance. It was a very sad ending to a short life.

But to fault a Democratic candidate for a couple of smiley pictures is really beyond disgusting.

It's totally absurd.

Good night and good luck.

There are about five photos where she is NOT SMILING.

I just showed my husband all the pictures in the OP. I had to tell him about this discussion.

His response was, "Why are you WASTING YOUR SATURDAY NIGHT with people who just want to find fault with her? It's the worst kind of baiting to criticize her for that. And these people call themselves Democrats?"

One picture of her smiling and giggling would be enough, but there are at least 3 pictures up there with hear smiling and giggling. The other pictures were added, I assume, for context.

At a place such as the Lorraine, on the 40th anniversary of Mr. King's execution, I really can't think of anything that would make me smile at that even? Am I outraged by her actions? No, but I think that it proves that she's off her rocker.

When I was there every person in the room was crying, black and white. Its part of the experience of going through the Museum that is probably harder to understand if you haven't been there. Crying is the only normal human response at that moment. Her fake smile and wave to the camera makes me wonder if there is something mentally wrong with her. I'm not being unfairly harsh about this. Nothing could have made me or anyone else in the room smile at the moment I was there.

social pathology is an epidemic in the US from our foreign policy down to how we treat each other on the street

often sociopaths have to fake appropriate emotional responses

the near inability to even feign appropriate emotions in an otherwise intelligent person is clearly indicative of SOMETHING

I ain't no "perfeshunnal" but this lady looks headed for a big crash and burn...

how do they keep her going? her eyes indicate near dissociation... she is somewhere else, man

Thought I recognized her.

I always crack wise that the single most dangerous act of a Texas Democrat is to get between SJL and a photographer.

It's a damn shame she'll probably get re-elected this year. But everyone I know in her district is furious with her. She wasn't all that helpful in the past, but HRC support has killed her political future.

At least she'll have some lovely photos taken of her day with Hillary.

Of all the places to go on that day, why there? Like whistling in a graveyard.

And I'm deeply offended yet again seeing these pics.

I don't fault you for posting these. We all need to see things that make us uncomfortable or worse, after all. In this case, it's definitely worse than uncomfortable.

I can't quite go as far as saying there's something seriously wrong with Senator Clinton, but it's beyond doubt to me that at the minimum, there's something seriously wrong with her campaign. And the candidate is demonstrably tone-deaf.

Maybe we should organize a big DU meet-up at the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis. We can all play Twister and smile and wave at each other on the balcony where Dr. King died.

-- Never mind. Even sarcasm fails me utterly with this.

18. Hi Jeff. I guess I'm in the middle of the muddle here tonight so I'm just going to bow out
gracefully.

Must have missed the fisticuffs and the photo last night.

That's OK.

We've just listed our Portland home for sale and it's been kinda busy here.

Have a good night, everybody.

67. This is the first time I've questioned her mental state.
Maybe its just the stress of the campaign trail. I can give her the benefit of the doubt for that much. But I've been on that tour and her fake smile and wave is not how any normal, sane human being should react to it.

But hey, if she thinks she might lose New Hampshire THEN she gets emotional. Jesus H. Christ.

20. No problem with the Rosa picture...
Rosa's achievement is something to smile about in remembrance. MLK's death is not something to smile about, it's something to mourn. It's awkward to see Hillary smiling on that balcony.

40. Wow. I've never heard anything like this. Except for the time when six women came on my radio show.
They were studying to be priests. They felt they were called by God to be...
Catholic priests.

There was so much hatred for those women from call-ins to my show that I had to do the interview WITHOUT allowing any calls.

That's what this reminds me of. This is flagrant prejudice against women and/or blacks. You name the bigotry -- it's in this pairing. I must be crazy to have thought that these two WOULD MAKE AN UNBEATABLE TICKET TOGETHER.

In what way am I pre-judging Hillary Clinton? All I said that it was awkward to see her smiling and it has NOTHING to do with her gender. I don't understand why you're hurling that at me.

104. I don't think you're prejudiced. I just think her facial gestures should not be put under a
microscope. Yes, smiling at this occasion may be "awkward" but walking around all frowny-faced through the ENTIRE sequence of photos is not necessarily an indication that she didn't understand or rever MLK as much as she should or as much as the other candidates do or did.

What's the standard here? I didn't watch the coverage, but Senator McCain was judged poorly because a black man held an umbrella for him while he stood in the rain. Seriously, is that some indication of his position on civil rights and the stunning events of 1968? BUT.... he didn't vote for the MLK holiday. Now, there's a real statement for you.

Women carry a greater burden in politics as they do in business and elsewhere. "A woman has to be twice as smart as a man doing the same job, and be willing to do it for half the money." Just a quote I remember from the past. It's amazing that we've come as far as we have.

I truly believe that Hillary Clinton would make a fine president, and I honestly feel the same about Barack Obama, although I am concerned about his youth, experience, and that nagging feeling that he might not be able to win against a seasoned Republican who is going to give Obama lots of competition.

So I am just worried enough about the "all sizzle and no steak" factor. We've had the "all hat and no cattle" pResident for so many years that I want the best person to do their best work.

Cordially,

28. What's odd about the Lorraine Motel is how insignificant it seems
They've made the motel into an INCREDIBLE museum that everyone should visit. But what's astounding about the site is how it was just some inexpensive motel slightly on the wrong side of the tracks in Memphis.

When you actually stand there and try to grasp the tragedy that happened there, it just seems like any old motel.

Now it's like a surreal sacred ground. Hardly a place to be giggling for the cameras...

54. I thought it was a crass photo op
The whole scene was like a circus. Does John McCain, the guy who voted against the MLK holiday, get instant cred because he was there? Hell no! does Bush gain more cred for laying wreaths on graves? Of course not.

Obama was smart to stay away. Hey, we all know how he feels about MLK - his life is an MLK speech. The whole Memphis scene devolved into a cheesy political photo op, totally cheapening the legacy of Dr. King. It looked like a tacky tourist trap. I was waiting for Paris Hilton to show up.

64. Its just another example of how there's nothing genuine or sincere about the woman.
That part of the museum is a solemn, emotional moment. If there's ever a time to cry its then instead of when you think you might lose the election. And there she is with a fake smile to the camera like the insincere fake she is. That photo is everything that is wrong about Hillary Clinton.

63. When I got to that part of the Museum tour in the first pictures I cried.
Its at the end of the museum where you hear a recording of King's "I have seen the promised land" speech where he essentially prophesied his own imminent death and then you go out to the balcony where he was shot. It was one of the most emotional and gut wrenching experiences I've had.

And there she is with that fake smile waving to the cameras. What. the. fuck.

I think the tribute Obama did was much more meaningful than the fake tone of voice Hillary used in her speech and now these photos. The photos are disgusting. Before I even read this thread my very first thought was how crass. How could you stand there where he died and be smiling for your fans. Very bad taste.
