Beijing cartoon: Spells out the hypocrisy of boycotting Olympics
Edited on Fri Apr-11-08 02:45 AM by Obama_for_our_future

I think we should treat it like any other Olympics, do not punish the athletes. Any real message to the Chinese would take place in the realm of trade. Well done, Stuart Carlson of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

fuck human rights. It wasn't that important anyhow.

And this is a really well-drawn cartoon. What's a civilization being extinguished compared to that...well, that and amateur athletes.

5. Not just amateurs
There are lots of pros in the Olympics-- just look at the "Dream Team" :puke:

9. That's one reason why I've lost all interest
in the Summer Olympics.

2. Or we could boycott Chinese goods as well.
Nearly impossible, I know, but I do try as much as possible. Perhaps if we were to revitalize American industry we would stand a better chance. Regardless, I think it's rather nihilistic to suggest we do nothing.

3. or we could boycott one store that buys the most from China
by narrowing the boycott down to a single chain we could have greater impact

4. That would be Wal-Mart, of course.
And I think that's a great idea - one I'm already putting into practice. Unfortunately, it gets more difficult for some people do to rising prices and few choices.

7. That's why I don't agree with this Boycotting bullshit.
Americans are into so much symbolism that means so little, till everytime we talk like this, I'm trying to figure out if we don't see how transparently silly we look to the rest of the world.

We're in business with them to the max....but somehow, when it comes to an opening ceremony....well that's out.

Didn't like the idea when Polosi offered it up.
Didn't like it when Hillary came up with the same thing.
and didn't like when Obama chimed in, even if it was more measured (they quoted him as being identical to hillary anyways).
McCain had the same stance as Obama (maybe, if), but his was reported as though he was the only one with a clue of moderation to this grand idea.
Media sucks, and our politicians sometimes lets the media lead them by the nose.
Obama better do something about this media once he gets into the White House...cause this media monopoly shit has to stop.

15. You got my point!
The symbolism of boycotting the Olympics will do nothing. The US imbalance of trade with China is something that needs to be rectified, I know, easier said than done. Taking in far less of the Chinese made lead-based crap, and doing it in the name of human rights might get their attention- the Olympic boycott won't.

11. Originally, anyway, the story was that the OPENING CEREMONY would be boycotted,
not the games. I confess I've moved my eye away from DU a bit to do some actual WORK so I'm not fully up to date on this, but the opening ceremony is not the same as "the games" - it's more a symbolic gesture than anything else.

12. World leaders should boycott the opening ceremonies. The athletes should compete.
That's a fair compromise to me.

13. Maybe China should boycott the US for killing children in Iraq.
The US is in no position to be lording over others.

14. I'm not the United States.
I'm an individual. I sure as hell didn't kill any Iraqi children, and it wasn't done in my name.
