Senator Obama's Response to Latest Manufactured Outrage
Edited on Fri Apr-11-08 08:13 PM by Connie_Corleone
Senator Obama’s comments in response to the Clinton and McCain campaign’s attacks

TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA – At a town hall meeting in Indiana, U.S. Senator Barack Obama made the following comments in response to the Clinton and McCain campaign’s attacks:

“When I go around and I talk to people there is frustration and there is anger and there is bitterness. And what’s worse is when people are expressing their anger then politicians try to say what are you angry about? This just happened – I want to make a point here today.

“I was in San Francisco talking to a group at a fundraiser and somebody asked how’re you going to get votes in Pennsylvania? What’s going on there? We hear that’s its hard for some working class people to get behind you’re campaign. I said, “Well look, they’re frustrated and for good reason. Because for the last 25 years they’ve seen jobs shipped overseas. They’ve seen their economies collapse. They have lost their jobs. They have lost their pensions. They have lost their healthcare.

“And for 25, 30 years Democrats and Republicans have come before them and said we’re going to make your community better. We’re going to make it right and nothing ever happens. And of course they’re bitter. Of course they’re frustrated. You would be too. In fact many of you are. Because the same thing has happened here in Indiana. The same thing happened across the border in Decatur. The same thing has happened all across the country. Nobody is looking out for you. Nobody is thinking about you. And so people end up- they don’t vote on economic issues because they don’t expect anybody’s going to help them. So people end up, you know, voting on issues like guns, and are they going to have the right to bear arms. They vote on issues like gay marriage. And they take refuge in their faith and their community and their families and things they can count on. But they don’t believe they can count on Washington. So I made this statement-- so, here’s what rich. Senator Clinton says ‘No, I don’t think that people are bitter in Pennsylvania. You know, I think Barack’s being condescending.’ John McCain says, ‘Oh, how could he say that? How could he say people are bitter? You know, he’s obviously out of touch with people.’

“Out of touch? Out of touch? I mean, John McCain—it took him three tries to finally figure out that the home foreclosure crisis was a problem and to come up with a plan for it, and he’s saying I’m out of touch? Senator Clinton voted for a credit card-sponsored bankruptcy bill that made it harder for people to get out of debt after taking money from the financial services companies, and she says I’m out of touch? No, I’m in touch. I know exactly what’s going on. I know what’s going on in Pennsylvania. I know what’s going on in Indiana. I know what’s going on in Illinois. People are fed-up. They’re angry and they’re frustrated and they’re bitter. And they want to see a change in Washington and that’s why I’m running for President of the United States of America.”

145. To me it's NOT unbelievable --
If Kerry had answered attacks with truth we might be looking at a different world today.

Speaking the plain truth is something we've gone so long without that now it seems unreal.

No offense meant to you - just US Politics.

140. I sure HOPE so.
Talking about bitterness toward the government is one thing, but tying it guns and religion is extremely risky.

I'm an Obama supporter. But I cringed at his relating bitterness to guns and religion. Yes, Obama is right in his analysis; but guns and religion are the very issues the GOP uses to get votes. Fine for the GOP, but it's the Independents that matter and Obama needs to get control of this NOW.

I must say, I woke up this morning and my first thought was, "I hope Obama's campaign is not over."

They use "fracking" because you can't say the real thing on basic cable. Since I've never heard it in reality, I imagine its online presence probably comes from the show.

Haven't got this set, but still trying to find a good deal on it (must be pretty popular for them not to have too many sales of it).

Normally I don't have time to watch commentary tracks. But for these two episodes, I DEFINITELY want to hear what the writers and producers have to say about those VERY clear allegories to what is happening in Abu Ghraib and Iraq now.

When you see gas at $4 a gallon and trillions going into this war = Frustrated

When you see hospitals closing all around you and your Blue Cross not even being accepted at the closest hospitals = bitter

When you see a piece of slime like McCain that doesn't know one country from another = frustrated/bitter

Speak Obama, speak, speak, speak

I don't want McCain or Hillary Clinton to define my feelings.
They don't have a clue how I feel.
They don't care about me one bit.

And if they don't care about middle class me, they for sure don't give a damn about the "out of a job" class in PA or any other state.

People all over the country could sign it online.
Anyone who had the slightest fondness for what used to be our Constitution or Bill of Rights.
Anyone who can't find a job or can't hold onto their home.
Anyone who can't afford their medical bills.
Anyone who sort of likes it when the people who make the laws also follow them.
Anyone who feels duped that we entered into an unwinnable war for the wrong reasons.
Anyone who doesn't like being lied to 935 times and counting...

If it happens, lemme know. I'll be the first signature on that thing.

and he has the ability to inspire AMERICA to THINK!

It is ironic that Sen. Just Words Obama did not force any of this but it magically evolved.

His opponents don't seem to get it right now, and they may never see it.

However, millions of people, all over the world, have their eyes wide open and are joining hands for CHANGE.

Yes... I'm bitter in California and I'm African American

24. I'm impresssed, too.
K&R, because I grew up in a small town and I know small towns. People in them ARE often bitter and it is no insult to call them bitter either. And there ARE people in small towns who cling to the God, guns and gays stuff because they've been persuaded to vote against their economic self-interest by people scaring them into thinking that their right to worship as they please, own a gun, etc., is in danger somehow. They've been frightened into believing that gay marriage would weaken THEIR marriages somehow. It's TRUE. It's not true of all, but it's true of SOME. And I don't care if other people try to make political hay out of admitting it. It is TRUE.

He handled this perfectly. Oh, they'll still try to paint him as an elitist who wants to take people's guns and religion away, or try to make it sound bad that he called anyone "bitter." (I can just hear it: "Are you bitter? I don't see any bitter faces out here! I can't believe the candidate of HOPE is now accusing YOU of being BITTER!!") But it'll be bullshit. It won't work.

17. I'd guess that it's too risky for him REALLY to be doing it on purpose
but if he were behind instead of ahead it wouldn't be a bad idea! When this sort of thing comes up the tends to turn the lemons into lemonade pretty darn dependably. It's almost uncanny. I'm sure he could make a mistake that would really turn out to be a long run, serious mistake, but so far each 'mis-step' turns out to be just a stutter step before he goes up to the shot and makes the dunk while everybody else is on the way down.

Entire reversal of his message that people aren't cynical and are optimistic.

Reminds me of the Michigan Republican primary. McCain said no, your jobs aren't coming back. Romney said wait! Yes they are! Be optimistic! Guess who won.

71. You totally missed it. He's not saying people are pessimists; on the contrary. The circumstances
they've been handed are causing bitterness and frustration, but they are optimistic, believing
that they may be able to climb out of the ditch IF there's the possibility of changing
the policies and politics that got them there.

Big difference.

Gobama.

He responds to EVERY attack - intelligently and quickly.

We NEED someone like this in the WH. He's not afraid of being called names or being criticized. Someone throws a curve ball at him and not only does he catch it, he hurls it back twice as hard ... but he doesn't get down and dirty to do it. He simply hits them with truth and common sense.

Democrats in Congress can learn a lot from him about how to deal with this kind of nonsense.

a monstrous concoction of the right wing should have their head examined. These two are trying to get rid of Obama and so far it isn't succeeding. McCain really should be easy for Obama to put away once the GE gets hear.

It is possible that Clinton's reputation will be destroyed based on the kind of campaign she is running. Her and her husband have squandered their good will and really ripped apart their good name. I would have never thought it possible for a president that was so beloved to be looked at as a bitter old politician whose time has come and gone. Wow.

While Obama is on his "A" game, Clinton looks like a washed up old politician who can only rely on the help from political machines and the GOP.

Obama will keep putting the screws to her and hopefully people will come to understand that Obama is working on behalf of the people and that Clinton is working on behalf of herself and the machine whose trying to put her in place for the same constituency that Bush aspires to.

We ARE so cynical, so beaten-down, so used to being bitter we really only bitter about BEING bitter, it is frankly hard to believe that a mainstream politician actually SAID this. Like, has he read "The Trouble with Kansas" or something?

You mean to tell me he might actually have a freakin' CLUE???

Wouldn't that be something...

120. The CNN analysts weren't buying the Clinton-McCain spin on this one...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4G8dRMofHNs

...they pretty much universally ridiculed Clinton and McCain for trying to pull this one off, Toobin and Cafferty came up just short of flat out calling them idiots, it was hilarious. And they didn't even mention Obama's response yet... wait until he starts hammering that message, which he definitely will. Talk about shooting themselves in the foot, eventually Clinton and McCain have to start figuring out that the old school sound bite manipulating game playing isn't effective against Barack. They're going to get punished on this, McCain is going to be getting hit with this from here until November.

134. Obama says "Nothing ever happens"? Under Bill Clinton, income rose at all levels.
Under the last elected American President, the poverty rate dropped from 15.1 percent in 1993 to 12.7 percent in 1998—the lowest poverty rate since 1979 and the largest five-year drop in poverty in nearly 30 years (1965-1970).

Under a Democratic President, the African-American poverty rate dropped from 33.1 percent in 1993 to 26.1 percent in 1998 -- the lowest level ever recorded and the largest five-year drop in African-American poverty in more than a quarter century (1967-1972).

The poverty rate for African-American children fell from 46.1 percent in 1993 to 36.7 percent in 1998 -- the lowest level in 20 years and the biggest five-year drop on record.

The poverty rate for Hispanics fell to the lowest level since 1979, and dropped to 25.6 percent in 1998.

The Clinton Administration also had the lowest poverty rate for single mothers on record.

sometimes the results what someone does are not realized until latter

The deregulation of the media, banks, along with trade agreements, NAFTA, and corporate mega merger effects were not realized when it occurred, it took time for its effects to happen

Thank goodness the line item veto was never passed. The effects of it would not have been realized until bush jr. took control

Not only are many Unitedstatesians bitter, we're also dumbed-down by a steady diet of television training, giving us an attention span of 11 minutes, and then only in small, fast-moving chunks. "The plug-in drug," Marie Winn termed it. I hope the U-tube generation breaks free of the disease and heeds Obama's message. Still, I hope the candidate can find a way to simplify the text. It's persuasive. I want also to learn what he'll do differently.

161. No voters DO NOT like being condescended to
Barack Obama speaks the truth about Pennsylvania. People there have watched their jobs being shipped overseas, while no one has done anything about. People there have watched their communities crumble and watched their children move away to make a better life. They ARE bitter about how they have been screwed by Republicans AND Democrats who come around every four years and promise about how "things will get better."

Hillary "the $109 Million Dollar Woman" Clinton and John "I married an heiress" McCain are the ones doing the condescending, and Obama called them on it.

175. So Obama has to explain what he really meant ...AGAIN.
How many times is that now? He's just a neophyte politician and needs some polishing and experience. He's not ready for the presidency yet and needs about another 8 years of grooming. I'm tired of his blunders and having to explain that he didn't really mean what he said and that he meant something entirely different. For an skilled speaker...he sure puts his foot in his mouth. But that's alright because the media and his supporters won't criticize him or notice because they are too busy going after the Clintons. But, wait till he gets in the GE and stage all to himself...they will be all over him like honey from a bees nest when they show their true favorite...John McCain! Open your eyes people. We are about to walk slowly and blindly over a cliff.

Take a comment about hill supporters' willful ignorance, and lie and act like it was said about PA voters.

If a lot of PA voters disagreed or took offense at what Obama actually said... hillary wouldn't need a parade of surrogates manufacturing poutrage to try and support the spin.

The people aren't upset or offended specifically because they have the brains to read the full transcript and see that Hillary is lying to them, AGAIN.
