Bush Looks to Head Off Kerry's Criticism

Bush Looks to Head Off Kerry's Criticism
By TOM RAUM, Associated Press Writer

FROM: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040612/ap_on_el_pr/iraq_mission&cid=694&ncid=2043
WASHINGTON - For days, President Bush (news - web sites) has been performing on the world stage — and trying to meet, one by one, the criticisms of Democratic rival John Kerry (news - web sites). Bush's recent moves and concessions may be an attempt to buy insurance against some of the sharpest Democratic criticism he can expect in the fall.

His political advisers also want to protect the GOP's traditional lead over Democrats on national security issues.

But much of that may be lost on Americans preoccupied, for now, with the death and legacy of Ronald Reagan (news - web sites).

The string of international meetings has enabled Bush to exhibit presidential leadership abroad, a role Kerry can't play.

5. The Power of a President
Well, we just can't estimate the power of a President, any President, to control an agenda. It is a powerful political tool. I think Kerry's team is pretty sharp and will deal with it.

7. That's one thing to thank Reagan for
His timing was impeccable. He could have died during the Democratic convention or a couple of weeks before the election, but he chose to do it just in time for Bush's Week of Photo-Ops.

8. Looks like Bush* is completely on the defensive now!
JK's got him on the run in every single area. The only remotely positive Bush* number is National Security. Watch for Jk to attack without mercy in that arena now.
