"Keep your eye upon the donut, and not upon the hole"
As I've been perusing some threads here, I've noticed a small but vocal number of posters making statements along the lines of "If Kerry chooses X as his running mate, I won't vote for him" and "Unless Kerry abandons his support for Foreign Policy Position Y, I'll vote for Nader", etc. . Reading those statements makes me angry, because it shows to me a mind that is as rigid and inflexible as any freeper's and demonstrates a total lack of understanding of the gravity of this election.

I did not support John Kerry in the primaries, and I could never call him 'my ideal candidate for President' with a straight face, but sweet sufferin' Jesus, he is MANY orders of magnitude better on his worst day than GWB ever will be on his best day! I can't even begin to comprehend how a rational, progressive person who is at all politically aware could even consider supporting anyone but Kerry in November!

Y'all need to wake up and smell the coffee, and put the primary bullshit mentality behind you.

4. All the issues that
divide us will never be addressed with the current administration. Wake up people. If we don't get Kerry elected, it won't matter what Gays, Hispanics, Colored, Women, Aids victims, the poor, the elderly or anyone else with an axe to grind think. Bush said he is a "war president" and that it would be easier to be a dictator. I take him at his word. Those two statements may be the only true statements he has ever made..and ever will make.

The only way any changes from perpetual war with a dictatorial government can possibly be made is with a change in the leadership, so put the differences aside and do what will make this country great once again. It's imperative to get Kerry elected.

6. I think this is the most important election ever.... if we don't take
back the White House, I truly feel there will never be another chance.. The Repugs will make it a one party country. I wrote here and said that if Kerry picked McCain I would not vote for Kerry, but I was just upset at the time...I sure would not be happy about this but we have got to do to get this filthy administration out!!!

11. Two of my favorite quotes (paraphrased)
Arianna Huffington: When the house is burning, you don't redecorate.
Jackie Goldberg: Don't complain to me about the negative aspects regarding voting for the lesser of two evils - should I vote for the greater of two evils?!?!?!?!?!?! (btw, I don't think Kerry is "the lesser of two evils", I happen to like him, personally).

10. I agree.
I had a favorite during the primaries, but I always said that whoever got the Dems nod would get my vote. I still stand by that, and don't mind doing so because I've liked many of the things Kerrys had to say. And most of all...

He's not Bush.

12. You need to remember that that there are
a lot of teenagers here. Some are mature and others try to pass as older than they are. And some, no matter their age, have never matured.

Kerry wasn't my first choice either, but this is no time to be an idealist. The quality of our lives and our children's lives for the foreseeable future may well depend on the outcome of the 2004 election.

27. Absolutely!
This is NOT the election to be nit-picking! We must remember that we are electing Kerry as President. These thinly-disguised, quasi-blackmail threats to not vote for Kerry because he does/does not pick A as his VP, or because he doesn't support an immediate withdrawl from Iraq, e.g., are too ridiculous for words. I've seen children throw temper tantrums, and that's precisely what those sorts of threats are...

16. ABSOLUTELY!!
To undecideds and Nader lovers:

Former Secretary of Labor, Robert Riech said in his book and in many interviews that, although wrong in most ways, the neocon Republican party is strong because they are organized, disciplined and stick together. The Democrats need to stand behind the general principles of liberalism, put aside their individual issues and unite build a strong Democratic party and campaign, which will win. Without this unity. They could lose. We all would lose. A lame duck Bush will be a disaster.

Those who think they are voting for their "principles" by supporting Nader are pig-headed, all-or-nothing people who are not going to get anything if they vote for Nader and Bush wins.

(You may flame me for the name-calling, but I won't respond to it. Our country is at stake. Not my ego.)

If you are on the edge, PLEASE get a copy of Reich's book: "Reason: Why Liberals Will Win the Battle for America" Borrow it if you have to. If you don't want to read the whole book, start at Chapter V pg 186. Go to the book store and read it there. It makes a strong case against being wishy washy (my words).

18. I fully agree....
Bush & Co. has to go. Nader cannot do it. Kerry is our only chance for the Republic to endure. If you oppose * you MUST vote for Kerry. There is no realistic alternative for the survival of this Nation.

19. I can understand it.
But I'll be voting for Kerry in November. I may be disappointed in the direction my country or my party is going, but if I don't do what I can to help evict *, I'll need to leave the country as well as the party. So I'll stick it out and work for the changes I think we need after we've evicted *. I believe that rational, progressive people will, for the most part, be with Kerry in the voting booth. In all honesty, regardless of disappointment in the primaries, or frustration with the platform, the thing most likely to shift the rational to a 3rd party candidate would be attacks from fellow democrats. It's one thing for the power holders and brokers to put a group of voters on "ignore;" it's entirely different when fellow progressive voters and/or party members attack and alienate those they disagree with. Party unity should mean reaching out to all with encouragement to stay together.

I understand their pain and that they want to stand up to their principles but there's a saying I have:

If you're stranded at sea, you don't turn down a rubber raft just because you'd prefer a yacht.

Time for people to put things behind them...This isn't anything personal. It's just that the immediate goal should never be lost -- GET BUSH THE HELL OUT OF OFFICE!

Until that happens no progress, nothing, nada, zip, can be achieved. The country will continue its downward spiral on its path to hell.

I understand being dissapointed if Kerry doesn't pick your choice as the VP (I'd be somewhat dissapointed if Gep gets it), but there can ultimately be ONE VP...and being that Kerry won the nomination, he has that choice...and whomever that choice is, they will be a million times better than Dick Cheney is.
