Dear Sen. Obama (from an African-American woman)

Dear Sen. Obama (from an African-American woman)

Dear Senator Obama:

My name is Chastity and I’m a 33-year-old African-American woman. I was deeply saddened and disturbed by your comments about Senator Clinton. A woman has a right to defend the 2nd amendment without condescending comparisons that represent your lack of knowledge in regards to the women’s suffrage plight.

“Who does she think she is? Annie Oakley?”

I want to answer that question. If you are asking if Senator Clinton is similar to Ms. Oakley in her amazing talent and timely rise to fame which propelled her to become the first American female superstar, then I agree with that depiction.

I must tell you I am deeply offended that you find it humorous that she would defend the right of men or women to bear arms. If it were not for the media’s disdain for Senator Clinton, your not-so-humorous comments would be put in their appropriate context.

You expressed regret in regards to your wording of the “bitterness” of small town citizen’s economic struggles but, the next day, you disparaged Senator Clinton regarding her defense of constitutional freedoms. I am appalled by the media’s lack of outrage. (Women everywhere should also be outraged!)

Senator McCain also referred to your comments as elitism and out-of-touch. So does that mean he’s the Lone Ranger?

It is also fair to note you did not make any jokes at Senator McCain’s expense.

In a time when we have the possibility of an African-American or female president, to have one of the candidates publicly demean another candidate is unacceptable. I implore you to not only apologize publicly to Senator Clinton but to educate yourself on Ms. Oakley’s contributions to society. She broke stereotypes, and she engaged in extensive, albeit quiet, philanthropy for women’s rights and other causes.

“Shame on you.” “You should know” that using humor as a vehicle to degrade someone that expressed justified concern about your misrepresentation of small town America as “bitter” — instead of “ungratified” — only antagonizes the up-hill battle that women face in the fight for equality.

If elected president, you will not only represent the ungratified small towns, but you will also represent Senator Clinton and her right to protect unalienable rights. To mock her remarks because your statements were “self admittedly inappropriate” is wrong.

You are displaying an antipathy for someone who represents thousands of American women who have been disparaged for centuries. And you abet the continued inappropriate characterization that woman cannot lead a country or defend a nation.

As an African-American, I am “very proud” to have someone of your caliber representing us in the presidential race, but as a woman I am “equally proud” of Senator Clinton for the same reason.

There is nothing funny about that!

Sincerely,

Chastity from Texas

121. Way back in 1978, my drill sergeants labeled me "Anne Oakley"
but not without paying a price.

When the first group of U.S. Army ROTC Cadets arrived at the Rifle Range, we all had to first, "Zero our M-16 weapons." My dear old dad taught me to first use a .22 caliber. Therefore, I zeroed "in the bulls eye in the first two three shot volleys. After the first "adjustments" our Drill Sergeant walked up with me to the target and after seeing the tight groupings in the center circle bullseye, looked me in the eye and said, "Cadet, do that for me again!" Yes, I went back and repeated the pattern. :eyes:

Throughout qualification during that week at Fort Knox, KY, 1978, the macho male men saw that "a women" could fire as well as a man. One Sergeant after a lengthy discussion, concluded that perhaps "young girls" listen better to their fathers and because they use lighter rifles with less recoil (.22 cal), girls have the edge to fire better than some of the men when qualifying with the M-16.

MY POINT: Hillary NEVER (not ever) had to prove herself separate from her husband's shadow.

If you think about women who use their husband's position to their advantage ... really consider all the shameful arrogance that applies to that assumed entitlement, then you should not be taken aback when those of us who INDEPENDENTLY succeeded *truly resent* those women who take such smarmy shortcuts.

HRC did not have to endure the "in your face" sexism that I endured. During one round of qualification, my glasses shattered and I had to have my right eye bandaged for the final round. I still fired "expert" although I was left handed ... (left-eye dominant) I used a brass-deflector with the M-16 rifle.

Women who use their "husband's rank" anger me.

They did not pay a genuine price for their status.

It's not fair or perhaps, even logical, but I resent women like HRC who, IMO, shame our gender. :(

140. Great story and Congrats!
I also agree with you, I have been a single mom since I was 16, without a dad or a husband and have raised a handicapped child by myself.

Hillary was never my first choice, but I do understand that in her generation she had to make a choice.

She chose to 'make the man' and then reverse roles. I don't think Bill Clinton would ever have hit the national stage, let alone be a two term President without Hillary. Hillary would never be in the position she is in without Bill. They are two halves of a political whole. Bill was not joking when he said "two for the price of one".

Personally I would rather see a Governor be POTUS, regardless of gender.

It's going to be a real issue, on both sides. I've seen and heard some things that will make it hard for me to be a supporter of Senator Obama, too (and I know, most O fans say they would never vote for Senator Clinton). I know we all think we are innocent and none of us wants to think our candidates could do anything wrong, but the truth is they are all politicians.

As Skinner pointed out in another thread, say something good about Hillary and the Obama supporters fall all over each other to crash the thread.

It is a good letter. Anyone who pretends he is running a positive campaign needs to take off the blinders. He made the original remarks anyway. So she responds. And he responds. And somehow it's only Hillary who's negative! Give me a freaking break.

36. I think you are in denial about your sainted candidate
I refer you to the four-page memo that was circulated that tried to (and succeeded) at framing the Clintons as racists that came from his campaign. Tim Russert asked Obama about it, and he even acknowledged it and offered up a half-hearted apology, then tried it again.

His campaign has been extremely negative. Oh, it's subtle. It won't hit you over the head. But it is pointed and snarky and THERE. One only has to see how it's rubbed off on his supporters, and the tone they take, to get what's going on.

190. "His campaign has been extremely negative. Oh, it's subtle. "

Yes the water was extremely hot... so hot in fact, it was cold.

Someone in Obama's campaign complied a list of statements the clintons had made on race... Compiling a list of statements made by the clintons about race, is not trying to portray them as racists. That's called research.

Calling hillary on her running around acting like she's been a hunter and gun enthusiast her whole life, isn't viciously attacking her defense of the 2nd amendment. It's calling her out on inconsistency and insincerity.

But as usual the obama haters who have nothing positive to say about hillary, have to try and spin anything he says.

I saw one of you saying he had come unhinged in a video where is was laughing at hillary's sudden transformation into a avid hunter and gun collector.

You got hillary's hater crew posting racist freeper videos in the vid section... just to take a shot at obama.

You got hillary's hate crew arguing that posting a complete transcript of what obama said is SPIN.

You got hillary's hate crew attacking democrats as limousine liberal elitist latte drinkers.

You've got Hillary herself circulating right wing talking points for her faithful to spew like so much vomit.

You've even got hillary on TV calling Kerry and Gore elitists who didn't share americans' values.

Take a step back and look at what you've all become... all to prop up Hillary.

104. I watched the speech on You Tube...and he came off as a Preacherman...
Honestly...watching that I felt like I was listening to a Preacherman....

He didn't seem Presidential to me in that speech before the Steel Workers. He slipped into a Southern accent...down home...which seemed Preachy. He "got into his rhetoric" too much and enjoyed the Annie Oakley thing a little too much.

I don't disagree with what he was saying...but his delivery isn't going to go over well with the general public... Too "down homey" when what many people are looking for is confidence and sophistication.

I worry that Obama is becoming a chameleon.... It's not good to slip in and out of accents. He was born in Hawaii...lived in Indonesia, his mother and grandparents were from Kansas he graduated from Columbia and Harvard .....yet he's talking like Reverend Sharpton. I've heard him speak very differently in other speeches. So he slips in and out of the preacher mode.

This will bother many people.

115. I don't care for that either. I first noticed it when he was with Oprah
In South Carolina. He picked up a markedly different tone.

However, the fact that he HAS lived in so many places might contribute to that. He doesn't have a particularly strong identity with any one place.

147. Hmmmm... well, I've lived in a lot of different places, too,
throughout my childhood and into adulthood. It's true for me that I don't really identify strongly with any one particular place as "home." It's also true that my accent will slip into various modes depending on where I am and/or who I'm speaking with. This happens on a totally subconscious level and is something that I really have no control over. So, your comment regarding this is interesting and, I think, quite possible. It's something I hadn't really considered in relation to this until you mentioned it.

161. I slip in an out of "accents" too...but it's caused me problems my whole life in that
folks think I'm inauthentic who don't know my roots. And, this is why I posted about this. In the General Election those voters who look for "authenticity" will worry about Obama slipping in and out of accents and persona's. I can understand...but I also know that we don't need a Dem Candidate against McCain who the Repugs will go after {what this Democrat who knows the future of all of us depends on a Dem Winning in '08) that they will parse with their 527's and the rest of their MACHINE to present to us as a Chameleon.....:-(

I want to WIN in '08.. NEITHER OBAMA NOR CLINTON...are going to do this for us....and then there's the DRE Machines and Karl Rove on the loose and a McCorporate Media who will finish it all off.

We have FLAWED CANDIDATES..that the Repugs will use against us. Hillary and her "Hubby Baggage" and Obama with his own......

Another DEM FUCK UP!

82. She is not criticizing him for the bitter comment.
She is criticizing his disparaging remarks towards Clinton. She is voicing her opinion that she finds this offensive, while re-iterating her support for him. It is possible for people to do these things. I know it's not allowed here, but in the real world people actually question and challenge their preferred candidates. It's the way it should be, otherwise we end up with people like Bush in the WH.

many of these people will be on the first wave of defection from the sainted one if he is actually elected. it's funny that my friend jason suggests you need to hone your critical thinking skills considering the obama cult of personality/tabula rosa candidacy. hope and change...yeah sure, that's great, but i don't consider that critical thinking. nor are most of the responses in this thread based on critical thought. to many of his supporters, obama literally can do no wrong.
having said that, i would vote for obama or clinton in november, without hesitation. i've thought critically about it, and my priority is to elect a democrat.

70. Dear Chastity:
My name is Window and I'm a 64 year old African-American woman. I was deeply saddened and disturbed by your letter suggesting that just because Hillary is a woman, she should be excused for her bad behavior toward Sen. Obama.

From one African-American woman to another, GET OVER YOURSELF.

Just because you are a woman, African-American or any other woman, does not give you the right to ignore Hillary's kitchen sink strategy against Sen. Obama while denouncing him when he dares to respond in kind.

I'll stop here because I could not stomach any more of your letter.

What I did read would be funny as hell if it weren't so pathetic and patronizing.

Sincerely,

Window from DU

Why is it important that this piece feigning outrage (more like bitter that Hillary is losing) is coming "from an African-American woman"?

111. That's the point, isn't it? Who cares if Chastity is upset that Obama defended himself
against Hillary's smear?

There are a lot of people who don't agree with his choice of the word "bitter," a lot more who do, and they understand the sentiment he was expressing.

Chastity is going off on a phony tangent about Obama mocking Hillary. This is not the same as her mocking him out of the blue with her "Celestial Choirs" comment. He called her out, and he had every right to.

If Chastity cannot understand that Hillary's actions, jumping on Obama's comment, is a sign of pathetic desperation, then she is in for a lot more disappointments.

She should start a diary.

Do you really believe that Chastity's feigned outrage has any impact on anything?

I'm having a discussion with you because you haven't started a thread recently. It appears you found another thing that you believe defines Obama, and that thing is just more phony spin.

It's pretty fascinating.

103. The "Annie Oakley"comment
I think this letter distorts what Obama was going for with that comment. It seems to me that he made it in a lighthearted way to tease Clinton about her attempt to establish hunting cred by mentioning going hunting with her dad when she was a kid as if this somehow gives her a measurable boost in knowledge regarding the interests of hunters. This writer claims he called her "Annie Oakley" simply for defending a broad interpretation of the 2nd amendment. It's doubtful that Obama would have even commented on that subject if doing that had been all she had said on the issue.

206. No, it's BO and GWB who seem so much alike,

and both are constantly propped up by the media.

The media are selling Obama just like they sold GWB in 2000.

The media selling a Democrat can only mean one of two things.

One is that they're going to tear him down like they did Howard Dean, make it easy for McCain to win. It's kind of late for that, though. If they believed he'd be the nominee, and were going to tear him down, they should be attacking him more by now.

The other possibly is that they actually want him to win the nomination and the election, which means their Republican bosses want him to win. If the latter is the case, the implications are pretty bad. Think about it.

Either way, Obama is bad news for Democrats.

Hillary Clinton renews call for gun licensing and registration

By Phil Hirschkorn/CNN

May 9, 2000
Web posted at: 6:34 p.m. EDT (2234 GMT)

NEW YORK (CNN) -- U.S. Senate candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton renewed her call for tougher gun control legislation on Tuesday before an audience of newspaper publishers.

"We have to do more to stand up to those who refuse to believe the reality that guns do kill and that common-sense gun measures can make a difference," Mrs. Clinton said during a speech to the Newspaper Association of America's annual convention in New York.
Hillary Rodham Clinton

"I believe we need a comprehensive plan to stop gun violence, and it is one of the reasons I am running for the Senate," the first lady said.

Mrs. Clinton, who is running for the seat of retiring Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-New York), added that she supports proposals that would require the licensing and registering of all new handguns purchased in the United States.

"The moms who are marching in Washington this Sunday have it right," she said, referring to the "Million Mom March" against gun violence scheduled for Mother's Day in the nation's capital.

March participants are also calling on lawmakers to pass gun safety legislation that has languished in Congress since last summer.

"We license drivers before they get behind the wheel to make sure they can drive safely. We register cars to make sure someone is responsible for every vehicle on the road. But we don't do the same for deadly weapons," she said.

Mrs. Clinton plans to attend the march with a delegation from New York.

If elected to the Senate, Mrs. Clinton said she'd work with Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-California) on her bill that would require prospective gun buyers to first obtain a gun license by passing a background check and a safety course exam. The bill would also establish a national registry to record all gun sales.

Mrs. Clinton also announced her support for the creation of a "ballistic database" for all new guns, requiring gun makers or sellers to fire guns before sale and send that "ballistic fingerprint" to law enforcement.

Mrs. Clinton suggested that the idea -- proposed earlier this year by New York Gov. George Pataki (R) and included in the government's landmark legal settlement with gun manufacturer Smith & Wesson -- should be implemented nationally.

"What we would have is a national database of these images that law enforcement officers could use to quickly track down the origins of guns found at their crime scenes and the criminals who use them," Mrs. Clinton said.

The first lady reiterated her support to require trigger locks on handguns, to hold adults responsible for their children's use of guns, to raise the youth handgun ban from age 18 to 21, to limit gun sales to one per month per adult and to have the Consumer Products Safety Commission regulate guns....

127. Dear Senator Obama,
While I have no idea why the right to bear arms is being conflated with women’s suffrage, I can appreciate the fact that you, being a CONSTITUTIONAL lawyer, really grasp the full meaning of our constitution and plan on correcting the recent infringements, and have every intention of protecting ALL of our rights. I really admire that in a President!

I must tell you that I am rather proud that you can make people in this country think about, and see the wedge issues that will be used in this campaign for what they are. Because as we all know, they are always used against whichever democrat that is in the race, be it Gore, Kerry, and probably even President Clinton, as a way to make them appear "soft and all liberally." I am surprised, that Senator Clinton considering her extensive record of voting against the gun lobbyists and the NRA, now is perceived as in a fight for their rights, when I'm sure she's VERY proud of her record making the country safer, as she should be.

I find it refreshing that you are trying to explain to Americans that the same issues (God, guns, and abortion) will be used as a way to convince people to vote against their best economic interests (especially in places like Ohio that always manage to vote against them), because the Republicans (and apparently some democrats) have a special talent for tricking them into voting on emotional things so that the real issues get ignored, and they feel good for 20 seconds while they pull that lever sticking it to the pansy Democrats who want to take their guns.

I would REALLY like to thank you for not siding with the Republicans on this one, since this is a DEMOCRATIC primary.
One tiny suggestion. Our past 7 years have been spent with Dubya at the helm, and we’re used to incoherent sentences, using very tiny words, with a cowboy swagger. So maybe if you could explain yourself more thoroughly keeping those tips in mind, I am sure you will be better understood, and will not be perceived as just another pansy elitist that Senator Clinton was so kind to point out.

Thanks!

THAT IS THE IRONY! It's the "pretending" that she continues to do.. and the false outrage. Anything to gain an edge over her opponent.

Yes, I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I No, you C-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-N'T--
CA-A-A-A-N! (Cough, cough!)
Yes, you ca-a-a-an!

Anything you can wear
I can wear better.
In what you wear
I'd look better than you.
In my coat?
In your vest! In my shoes?
In your hat! No, you can't!
Yes, I can
Yes, I CAN!
Anything you say
I can say faster.
I can say anything
Faster than you.
No, you can't. (Fast)
Yes, I can. (Faster) No, you can't. (Faster)
Yes, I can. (Faster) Noyoucan't. (Faster)
YesIcan! (Fastest)
I can jump a hurdle.
I can wear a girdle.
I can knit a sweater.
I can fill it better!
I can do most anything!
Can you bake a pie? No.
Neither can I.
Anything you can sing
I can sing sweeter.
I can sing anything
Sweeter than you.
No, you can't. (Sweetly)
Yes, I can. (Sweeter) No, you can't. (Sweeter)
Yes, I can. (Sweeter) No, you can't. (Sweeter)
Yes, I can. (Sweeter) No, you can't, can't, can't (sweeter)
Yes, I can, can, can (Sugary)

Yes, I can! No, you can't!

205. So it IS his penis alone that "qualifies" him?

Just what I've thought all along.

183. What a nonsensical commentary.
Clinton and McCain have said different things, so they warrant different responses. And Hillary sounded ridiculous pandering on guns with her "my Dad taught me to shoot" story, after being unable to say when she last shot a gun.

Hillary is fast becoming a punchline, and it has nothing to do with her gender. It has to do with the content of her character.

187. If Senator Clinton's campaign can race-bait via surrogates, then the
Obama campaign can at the very least ridicule Hillary the rough-and-tough outdoorsy shoot-'em-up-huntin' babe.

Her pandering is not a product of her gender identify but a symptom of her ego-driven scorched-earth compulsion.

As usual, this poster fails to survey the entire landscape, in which her candidate is notably transgressive.

189. It's GOT to be satire - this sentence alone:
"In a time when we have the possibility of an African-American or female president, to have one of the candidates publicly demean another candidate is unacceptable.

Oh, "Chastity" you're such a joker!

192. Thanks for this.
I had to recommend if for no other reason than because of the degree of intolerance displayed by most of those who responded to it.

194. The hatred and disdain expressed on this thread
are frightening.

Be careful of the mob and the piling on of irrational hate.

196. Sounds like "Astroturf" to me
This sounds like Astroturf to me -- those are letters supposedly written by grassroots people, but actually written by campaign publicists and signed by a volunteer or supporter. The GOP is famous for flooding newspapers with "letters to the editor" produced just this way.

I've seen thousands of these.

I'm not saying it's not a real letter, but without knowing "Chastity," it has all the hallmarks of something written by a professional writer. (Not saying that the anonymous writer isn't a professional -- we just don't know.)

One factor is its tone, style, and vocabulary. Its Flesch-Kincaid score is about 12, which is far above where the average person -- even a college graduate who's not a professional writer -- scores. In fact, most college grads don't write at this level. It's above the reading level of many Americans.

Bottom line: I don't know, but I'll consider it Astroturf until someone produces the author, so we can see other stuff she's written.
