Clinton mayoral rally gets small turnout in Pa.
HARRISBURG, Pa. - Turnout at the "100 Mayors for Hillary" rally was a little under 20 percent.

Only 19 mayors of Pennsylvania cities showed up for Tuesday's rally in the Rotunda of the Pennsylvania Capitol. Other mayors' names were listed on placards supporting Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Harrisburg Mayor Stephen Reed spoke for the group against the backdrop of a banner touting the 100 mayors. He criticized Clinton's rival, Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, for saying at a San Francisco fundraiser last week that some voters in small towns in Pennsylvania cling to guns or religion because of their frustration over their economic circumstances.

Reed called Obama's comments "divisive and condescending."

"Small-town values are the bedrock of American values," Reed said.

Kathleen Strand of the Clinton campaign said rally organizers never expected all 100 mayors to attend and that some were participating in Clinton events in their home cities.

But an Obama campaign spokesman said participation in the rally is "about the same percentage of voters who actually care about this story."

"Voters are hungry to get this campaign back on who can create jobs and lower the cost of health care," said the spokesman, Sean Smith.

1. "Clinton Forced To Cut Speech Short Because Of Chatty Crowd"
Edited on Tue Apr-15-08 02:16 PM by FLDem5
Bad day for Hill!

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/04/15/clinton-forced-to-cut-spe_n_96774.html

Hillary Clinton was forced to cut her normal stump speech short when a chatty and meddlesome crowd kept her from grasping their attention. Clinton, who was addressing the Philadelphia County Democratic Party's Jefferson-Jackson Dinner, spoke for just over five minutes, despite having the press arrive almost two hours beforehand.

The crowd never settled down during her remarks. A spokesman for Clinton denied that she cut the speech short, and told reporters that Clinton was advised by her Pennsylvania team to deliver "a short speech" given the set up of the event.

(from the link)

In previous party dinners, most recently in Butte, Mt., Clinton spoke for almost an hour to a crowd that seemed to be paying attention. The aide said this was a “different type” of J-J Dinner, primarily because people were not seated at tables, and were “milling around” the banquet hall.

Whether or not Clinton’s reception at the dinner had anything to do with her recent attacks on Barack Obama remains unclear. Clinton has never delivered a formal speech in such a short amount of time. The most recent abbreviated speech was back on February 15 when Clinton spoke to a crowd at a Lockheed Martin plant in Akron, Ohio. The speech lasted for just 12 minutes, with the first applause line coming 11 minutes into the speech.

Do you know how Obama was received?

I was looking for footage on this but got sidetracked -- I'd love to see it.

About 6:20 p.m., Gov. Rendell, Mayor Nutter and U.S. Rep. Allyson Y. Schwartz accompanied Clinton onto the stage. Rendell and Nutter each took a turn at the microphone, but their words were mostly drowned out by the constant chatter in the hall.

Finally, when it was Clinton's turn - there were some shouts of "O-ba-ma" - she spoke for five minutes, some of it directly to the ward leaders, who can help turn out the vote on election day.

"How many ward leaders and committee members do we have here?" she asked as the crowd erupted in cheers. "You are the ones who get things done."

"I want to thank Bob Brady for putting together one of the best organizations," said Obama, who spoke for nearly 30 minutes.

He also cited Fattah as something of an inspiration to him when he ran for senator in Illinois. "I said to myself, if a guy named Chaka Fattah can get elected, so can Barack Obama."

7. In all fairness,
100 Mayors DID sign on, but must have had conflicting schedules or something that kept them from attending the gathering. :eyes:

11. Of course.
It's not as if anyone is feeling disgust over a campaign so filthy that Karl Rove himself could very well be working on it.

Hey--why did Rove leave the White House, anyway?
