4. Rob Kall: Covering the 2008 Clinton Obama Philly Debate

Covering the 2008 Clinton Obama Philly Debate

Diary Entry by Rob Kall Headlined on 4/17/08

I wondered whether it would be worth doing the one hour drive, through rush hour traffic, to do the debate in Philly yesterday and decided to take a gamble that something good would come out of it. Boy, was it a good decision.
::::::::
My main reason for going to a lot of these things is not to cover what I can see on TV, but to make contacts and get “color” and background, before and then after, in the spin room.

I'm not going to comment much on the actual debate, except for one aspect, to be discussed below. We'll have plenty of other folks do do that.
Arriving around 5:00 PM, I had to walk through a group of Clinton supporters. The streets around the Constitution center had a fringe of supporters a few people deep, for Hillary and for Barack—more for Hillary. Hillary’s people seemed better dressed and more organized. But I remembered back to August 2003, when the Democratic Presidential forum was held at the Constitution Center, and there were massively more supporters for Howard Dean than there were for Clinton and Obama combined. You tell me what that means.

… Within the first hour there, I had a chance to chat briefly with former clinton staffer George Stephanopolous, one of the debate moderators, and Dick Pohlman, one of Philly’s top bloggers. As the evening rolled on, I chatted with Congressman Joe Sestak, a few of the local Clear Channel right wing radio talk show hosts, Pa Governor Ed Rendell, who I had a chance to do a brief interview with, Philly Mayor Michael Nutter and Hillary’s campaign manager, Howard Wolfson..

… As we walked over to where he was set up, he explained I’d be interviewed by Amber Lee Ettinger—Obama Girl. They took a picture. It was a hoot. She seems taller in her videos.

5. My 82 Year Old Mother's Debate Reaction

My 82 Year Old Mother's Debate Reaction

Andrienne Wilson - April 17, 2008

Everyone on every network is missing the entire point of Obama's approach, and it is so basic I cannot believe no one has caught on.
There is one simple and overiding reason that Obama does not go in for the kill with Clinton, and it has nothing to do with his ability to "close the deal". Obama has to gain this nomination without pissing off all of Hillary's supporters.

If he dives in to any of the critical comments pundits and so-called reporters think he needs to in order to show some killer instinct, he will totally lose the women who are currently pro-Hillary forever. The vitriol is bad enough now, can you imagine how Hillary's girls would feel about him if he had flattened her?

I asked my 82 year old mother, who hates politics with a passion because it is so negative, what she thought about the debate. She said "Well, he's being a gentleman, of course. Thank goodness, that is why I will vote for him." She then said "It's about time someone behaved properly." She then also asked me why I was making her watch the coverage. "You know this is why I hate politics, I'm going to go play mahjong on the computer."

Simple, to the point, out of the mouth of a lady who usually won't even pay attention to all of this. This is not unpreparedness, this is foresight so complete, and farreaching that gaming minds have missed it. He can't win without all of those women. He can't win those women if they hate him for destroying Hillary.

7. A Big Thankee to those Folks at ABC!!!

A Big Thankee to those Folks at ABC!!!

Posted by NanceGreggs in General Discussion: Primaries Thu Apr 17th 2008

Being a regular person and a patriotic American, I admit that I usually don’t watch politics on TV or elsewhere.

As luck would have it (or, more probly, the Good Lord), I had just finished my last romance novel and left with nuthin’ to do, I wound up turning on the show you had last nite – and I was delightedly surprised at this debate thing you was airin’.

Finally, your boys asked the questions that folks like myself want answers to, no ifs ands or butts.

First off, I been wonderin’ about that loophole flag pin thing for a while now, and damn if that wasn’t one of your most important questions to ask!

Real Americans like myself understand that people who love this country wear those loophole flag pins all the time – why I’ll betcha that Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rice had ‘em proudly displayed the whole time they was at those torturin’ meetings discussing how we don’t torture anybody.

I did wonder why the people askin’ the questions wasn’t wearing any theyselves, or Hillry neither – but I guess they just didn’t want to embarrass that Brack Hussein fella by making it obvious that he wasn’t sporting one like he should.

Oklahoma Superdelegate Endorses Obama
by Sam Graham-FelsenThursday, April 17, 2008

Chicago, IL - Today, Oklahoma Superdelegate Reggie Whitten endorsed Barack Obama, citing his ability to unite Americans for change and his proven track record of standing up for middle class families and workers.
His statement regarding the endorsement is below:
"I have decided to endorse Senator Barack Obama and will work wholeheartedly to see him become the next President of the United States. Some say there is no particular need to endorse at the present time. However, I believe this is a defining moment, not only for our Party, but also more importantly for our country. Therefore, I made the decision to commit now.

11. 90% Of Superdelegates Back Obama

90% Of Superdelegates Back Obama

By Milton Allimadi April 17th, 2008

As DNC chairman Howard Dean urges super delegates to publicly commit their support for a favored candidate,
90% of 300 superdelegates who have yet to publicly back a candidate say they will support Senator Barack Obama,
The Black Star News has learned.

What’s more, some superdelegates that Senator Hillary Clinton’s campaign claimed had pledged their support for the New York Senator say they are actually backing Senator Obama.

Based on a survey of 300 of the remaining super delegates, 270 say they will support the Illinois Senator.

The Democratic Party apportions pledged delegates on a proportional basis during the primaries; this means that Senator Obama will win a large chunk of support in the remaining contests, beginning with Pennsylvania on April 22.

If the survey results are accurate, the Illinois Senator who now leads Clinton, is virtually assured of his party’s nomination.

32. I would be delighted if this were true, but this must be mistaken
According to DemConWatch, there are still 67 of the remaining 314 superdelegates that have yet to be determined -- the so-called add on super delegates. These are chosen according to each state's rules, but usually at their state or county convention. How can this article claim to know that 270 SD's have chosen Obama when only 247 have been designated at this point?

42. you are correct. However some of the 'add on' super delegates while not yet
selected are either already known who they are going to be, or like Maine the state committee has stated categorically it will be an Obama delegate. In any case all of these strange cases seem to be going Obama's way.

14. Philadelphia Daily News: VOTE FOR BARRACK OBAMA

Thu, Apr. 17, 2008
VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA

THE CHOICE in Tuesday's Democratic presidential primary is not only the one between a white woman and a black man.
It's a choice between the past and the future.

More specifically, the nation must decide how to face the future racing toward us in the form of slumping home sales, unstable financial markets and increased joblessness - and staring at us from the Green Zone in Iraq and the beds at veterans hospitals.

Should Democrats choose someone who will employ hard-won - even bitter - experiences gained in a past Democratic administration, or reach beyond political truisms toward a new (and untried) model of governing?

… But the long slog through 44 primaries and caucuses has confirmed for us that Sen. Barack Obama's vision of change - and the way he plans to pursue it - is what we need right now. Badly.

… An Obama administration would be freer of the the corrupting influence of big-money donors and corporate interests. Obama has raised $240 million overall, with half coming in contributions of less than $200. People who contribute to political campaigns can feel they "own" a candidate and so Obama would owe allegiance to the wide swath of America that has financed his campaign.

Based on his experience in running a quarter-billion-dollar enterprise with thousands upon thousands of volunteers, we could expect an Obama administration to be well-managed and cost-effective, with the president choosing forward-thinking advisers committed to his program, demanding that they work as a team and pay attention to details.

He would be steady and calm, given neither to irrational exuberance or outbursts of anger. He would make mistakes, that's for sure, but he could be expected to recognize them, adjust, and move forward.

17. Newsmax/Zogby Poll: Deadlocked in Pennsylvania!
Edited on Thu Apr-17-08 11:24 PM by WillYourVoteBCounted

Newsmax/Zogby Poll Deadlocked in Pennsylvania!

Released: April 17, 2008

UTICA, New York—With just five days left before Democratic primary voters go to polls to decide who they want to be their presidential nominee, Hillary Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois are locked in a battle that is too close to call, the latest Newsmax/Zogby telephone poll shows.

The survey, which was conducted April 15-16, 2008 and came out of the field midway through Wednesday's contentious debate between the two candidates in Philadelphia, shows Clinton at 45% and Obama at 44%, with 12% either wanting someone else or left undecided.

Pollster John Zogby—"This is not a year for negative campaigning and Clinton's pounding of Obama on his controversial description of small town voters in Pennsylvania does not seem to be working. Obama leads in the Philadelphia and eastern part of the Commonwealth, among African Americans, and Very Liberal Pennsylvanians. He also has a slight lead among voters in union households and has an 18 point margin over those who have lost a job. Clinton maintains her lead among whites, Catholics, Liberals, and Hispanics.

"The gender gap is huge with Obama leading among men by 15 and Clinton leading among women by 15. But Clinton holds a wide advantage on the question of understanding Pennsylvania (58%-27%) and handling the economy of the country (47%-38%). She also is ahead in understanding the personal financial situation of individuals (41%-35%).

"On the other hand, Pennsylvanians by a two to one margin (60% to 29%) are more likely to agree with supporters of Obama that voters in Pennsylvania are bitter about their economic situation than with Clinton and critics of Obama that he is an elitist who does not understand working people.

26. Clinton Rules

Clinton Rules

By: John Cole at 10:05 am

The GOS notes:

In one of the threads last night, commenter theran made a good observation:

At some point the concept of “Republicans will do X” has turned into a license for Hillary to do all the same things. It’s bizarre, but I don’t really consider her a Dem any more.

Actually, in fairness, Josh Marshall pointed this out several days ago:

With the Wright business and now with this, the more nuanced version of the Clinton line has been that what ‘we’ think is not really the point. It’s what Republicans will do with it in the fall. And that’s a real concern that I definitely have. I won’t deny it. I’ve never thought Obama was a perfect candidate. But as we get deeper into the primary calendar, increasingly so, this ‘what the Republicans will do’ line has become more of a simulacrum, or a license, if you will, to do what Republicans actually do do. That is to say, to grab for political advantage by peddling stereotypes about Democrats and liberals that are really no less offensive than the ones we’re talking about about Americans from small town and rural America.

And seeing Hillary go on about how Obama has contempt for folks in small town America, how he’s elitist, well … no, it’s not because I think she’s either. I never have. But after seeing her hit unfairly with just the same stuff for years, it just encapsulates the last three-plus months of her campaign which I can only describe as a furious descent into nonsense and self-parody. Part of it makes me want to cry. But at this point all I can really do is laugh.

Credit where credit is due.

27. Hillary Milhous Clinton

Hillary Milhous Clinton

Andrew Sullivan 17 Apr 2008

The Clinton camp is hammering the Weather Underground connection on the conference call this morning. The merging of the Clinton campaign with the very forces that once tried to destroy the Clintons is a fascinating moment. It does indeed show that for the Clintons, anything is possible in the pursuit of power. There are no permanent enemies, no permanent arguments, no permanent principles. Just the pursuit of power by all non-violent means. This, of course, has been the guiding, polarizing direction of American politics since Vietnam. It is the kind of politics that defined the Clintons and their generation. It is the boomer war fought by proxy: red-blue; patriot-wimp; American-unAmerican; faithful-Godless. And you cannot help but notice a kind of liberation in the Clinton camp, as they finally thrill to the full experience of deploying the cultural warfare and marginalization that they have been so used to Republicans using against them. And they get to use it against a black man in ways no Republican could get away with so easily. Man, that must feel good after all these years. No wonder she's still smiling.

The Clintons began their career fighting Nixon. They ended up, in terms of political tactics, becoming him. Yes, it's 1968 again. And the Clintons want to coopt the Silent Majority of their time. Their only problem is that it may no longer actually exist. We'll see.

29. Plouffe: Republicans Will Attack Hillary Too, Remember?

Plouffe: Republicans Will Attack Hillary Too, Remember?

By Greg Sargent - April 17, 2008

On an Obama campaign conference call moments ago, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe offered a novel push-back against Hillary's claims that she's better prepared for a general election.

Plouffe argued that because the Obama campaign hasn't run as brutal a campaign against Hillary as she has against him, she has not been thoroughly vetted and hence would also be vulnerable against the GOP, despite claiming the contrary.

We have not run a scorched earth campaign," Plouffe claimed, adding that as a result, "the Republicans are going to have any number of issues to use against Senator Clinton… The American people are not going to elect a president that they do not trust."

It's hard, however, to see that as being quite in the same league with the hits on Wright, and now, Ayers.

45 Minutes: Sen. Obama On Last Night’s ABC Debate

Published April 17, 2008 in Barack Obama and Media. 0 Comments
The mainstream media gets its blowback today. Obama was in Raleigh NC today, and the video of the town hall is up on You Tube now. He reacted to last nights debate, but more important - he explained HOW we could get Universal Health Care.
His plan includes a lot more transparency in govt then I have ever heard of. So if you haven't seen the town hall, he talks about health care in the middle I think. The folks in Raleigh were super excited about him visiting, so they show it throughout the video.

Does Scarborough Leave The Set After Rachel Maddow Hurts His Feelings?

By: SilentPatriot at Crooks and Liars

“Race to the White House” Rachel Maddow and Joe Scarborough got into a little argument after Rachel called him out for being rude and interrupting her when she criticized John McCain. At the end of the show, when guests are supposed to make a final prediction about the presidential race, Scarborough instead opted to take a shot at Rachel. After Rachel gives her response, Scarborough is nowhere to be found.

50. I figured out why Joe Scarborough hates Obama so irrationally
Scarborough is jealous as hell.

I heard a comment by Joe that here's this guy, only been in DC 1 year... blah blah blah
and he wants to be president.

Cause Joe is a failed politician - he was a US congressman for Florida until
a womanizing scandal (affairs) and a murdered intern ended his political career.

Joe is jealous as hell.

Primary Colors, the movie, and primary anger...my own. Trying to analyze them.

MadFloridian: For the last few days I have tried to really analyze my anger toward the Clintons. It is not like me to actually feel this deep an anger toward someone I respected for so many years. There is kind of deep sadness that goes along with the anger.

It is the process of a mind having to reevaluate feelings, trying to figure how much is directed at my state for its outrageous actions about the primary, the lies told....and how much is directed at the Clinton campaign for using my state as a tool of their campaign.

The other day HBO had the movie Primary Colors on reruns. I watched it with new eyes this time. I read the book years ago, and I was angry...how dare Joe Klein impugn them like that. I wish I had not watched the movie again.

47. Obama Picks Up New Ohio Delegate (thanks to absentee and provisional ballots in Hamilton County)

Obama Picks Up New Ohio Delegate

by gobacktotexas
Thu Apr 17, 2008 at 05:30:21 PM PDT
I'm on an Obama Ohio campaign mailing list with some relatively high ranking officials.

gobacktotexas's diary :: ::

I was just notified that thanks to absentee and provisional ballots, Barack Obama has picked up an additional delegate in Hamilton County(Cincinnati), OH. This means Hillary's net gain in Ohio was actually only seven delegates. Also on March 4th, Obama picked up 5 delegates in Texas. With Obama also netting 3 delegates in Vermont that day, and Hillary netting five in Rhode Island, this means that Hillary's BEST day so far of primary season 2008, her biggest delegate gain, was March 4th, with a net pick up of a whopping five delegates. Every other day Obama tied or beat her.

The email:

From: Jeffrey xxxxxxx@barackobama.com
Subject: Revised Pledged Delegate Count -- It's Moved Up to 171 Delegates
To:
Date: Thursday, April 17, 2008, 7:28 PM

It's official. Happy to announce that late-counted provisional and absentee ballots have won one additional delegate for Barack in the Cincinnati area. That means Ohio was only a seven delegate loss and our national lead in pledged delegates has moved up to 171 delegates.

51. Ongoing nomination fight hurting Clinton more than Obama
WASHINGTON (AP) — In a dramatic reversal, an Associated Press-Yahoo! News poll found that a clear majority of Democratic voters now say Sen. Barack Obama has a better chance of defeating Republican Sen. John McCain in November than Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

While Obama and Clinton are both sustaining dents and dings from their lengthy presidential fight, the former first lady is clearly suffering more. Democratic voters no longer see her as the party's strongest contender for the White House.

Voters of all types have gotten a better sense of Obama, who was an obscure Illinois legislator just four years ago. As more people moved from the "I don't know him" category in the AP-Yahoo! News poll, more rated Obama as inexperienced, unethical and dishonest. And 15 percent erroneously think he's a Muslim, thanks in part to disinformation widely spread on the Internet.

But Obama's positive ratings have climbed as well, while Clinton — widely known since the early 1990s — has been less able to change people's views of her. And when those views have shifted, it has hurt her more than helped.

52. George Snufalufagus Defends ABC and Debate Performance - Fails at That, Too
George Stephanooulos (I call him Snufalufugus) scrambled to defend his debate performance and that of Charlie Gibson's in the debate on Wednesday night. In an interview with Greg Sargent of TPM, Stephanopoulos, former press secretary under Slick Willy, and current Clintonista, lied continuously about how all the questions during the first half of the debate were focused "at the top on the issues that had been at the center of the debate since the last debate." Since the last debate? Lapel pins? The last debate was in Texas on February 21. The lapel pin controversy was whipped up in OCTOBER of LAST YEAR.

The handling of the debate by both Gibson and Stephanopoulos was both sophomoric and silly, piling on Obama for every irrelevant, superficial issue they could shovel. George also lied when he said that Hillary faced tough questioning, also. Yes, they did ask her about her lies about Bosnia AGAIN, but she gave the canned answer and they moved back to pounding Obama about William Ayers, the former 1970's Weathermen member who happens to live in Obama's neighborhood in Chicago.

The whole thing was silly. Nothing of substance was talked about, Obama was off his game trying to fend off stupid gotcha questions while Hillary beamed at the onslaught by her personal Clintonista asking the planted question from Sean Hannity. What a waste of air time. And a low point for ABC.

55. CBS Poll: Obama Dominant At Pa. Colleges
(CBS) Most students attending four-year colleges and universities in Pennsylvania are enthusiastic about voting in the presidential campaign, according to a poll conducted by CBS News and UWIRE, and Barack Obama is the overwhelming favorite among those who intend to vote in the Democratic primary.

Among Pennsylvania students who will vote or have voted in a Democratic primary in any state, Obama leads Hillary Rodham Clinton 71 percent to 28 percent, and among those who intend to vote in the Pennsylvania primary, Obama leads by a nearly identical margin of 71 percent to 29 percent. Support for Obama is consistent across types and sizes of schools.

Pennsylvania college students also say that John McCain has the experience a president needs and think he would be an effective commander-in-chief.

The level of enthusiasm and interest in the campaign is high and exists among freshman and seniors, men and women and in various public and private institutions across the state.

56. FLDem5 Stephen Colbert is fearless and his writers are genius
Not only does he have the considerable clout to book - in ONE night:

-Hillary Clinton
-John Edwards
-Barack Obama

Something anyone else in the media would wet themselves over, but his cajones to then treat these important people as no different than any other guest is jaw-dropping. He actually began ripping into the Clinton/Stephanopolous relationship before Senator Clinton was even off the stage. Wow. "Ballsalicious", as Jon would say

57. Dean's 25 Cred Committee Members Could Decide Hillary's Fate

Dean's 25 Cred Committee Members Could Decide Hillary's Fate

By Greg Sargent - April 18, 2008, 9:20AM

Curious to know more about the 25 Dean-appointed members of the convention credentials committee members who, if the race goes all the way to the convention, could decide Hillary's fate?

Meet them all right here.

My understanding of this suggests that it's unlikely that there will be a showdown on the credentials committee, however. It's unlikely that the credentials committee will vote on a proposal to settle the Michigan and Florida delegation problem that is flatly opposed by either candidate.

What's more, it's unlikely that in the end Hillary forces on the committee will bring a minority report to the floor if they oppose the majority-agreed-upon decision, because it would be all but certain to fail and she'd be blamed for the ensuing mess. But it's theoretically possible that it could play out this way, of course.

Get Involved
By: Tim F. (Balloon Juice) April 18, 2008 at 9:42 am

Ben Smith of the Politico (via):

The ABC debate, according to the network, got 10.7 viewers.

It also triggered the most furious outrage I’ve seen from the huge, and growing, Obama activist base, which in this case merged with the liberal Netroots—which aren’t always on the same page—to generate a volume of complaints about the first 45-minutes of questioning that are pretty impossible to miss.

It’s just a small glimpse, I think, of the level of heat the media is going to take in the general election, and John McCain doesn’t seem to have any equivalent.

Did you forget to call ABC today? I bet the lines won’t be as busy.

(212)-456-7777

Polite but pissed always works better than profanity. It can’t hurt to remind ABC News about their Path to 9/11 probation.

60. Clinton was pushing the "O Bomber" story long before Hannity
The Jed Report has it:

Fri Apr 18, 6:00

Clinton pushed story to Stephanopolous long before Hannity

George Stephanopolous is rightfully catching a lot of grief for having asked Barack Obama about William Ayer especially because Sean Hannity urged him to pose the question.

But it's worth remembering that even before Hannity put the topic in front of Stephanopolous, ABC News reported that the Clinton campaign itself was pushing the "story" in the middle of February, if not before. So while Hannity might have talked about it on air with Stephanopolous on Tuesday, it wasn't anything new to Stephanopolous or ABC News.
