20. He's getting a check because he paid into the program!
THAT'S the reason SS is not considered a welfare program! McCain is nuts for supporting privatising SS, but you don't want to change things to have people paying into the program but not allowed to collect the benefit because they have too much money.

The wealthier you are, the lower the percentage of your income is paid into the system.

I have no problem with him collecting it - but he should have been paying a proper proportional amount into it.

I KNOW PEOPLE PAY INTO SOCIAL SECURITY SO THEY SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO COLLECT!!! TALK ABOUT FULL OF SHIT.

31. Then you should ask HIM why he applied fo benefits.
He IS eligible, but if he really dislikes the program, he could have passed on applying for benefits and he wouldn't be getting any checks. Your problem appears to be with McCain, so ask him yourself or contact someone who will be at one of his town meetings and have THEM ask him about it.

That was the plan. I would bet on it. They knew that paper would soon be worth less than the paper it was printed on.

37. No. SS is an age based program. If you apply fore benefits when you're 63
and continue to collect a paycheck, your SS benefit will be reduced based upon your earnings. Once you reach 65, you can collect full benefits no matter how much you make.

42. You know what would also make a nice age-based program?
SCOTUS. After a certain time on the bench, you get too old and tired and sick and stupid to make rational juridical decisions. The retirement age should be 70.

And quite frankly, that would be a good idea for POTUS as well.

67. that's mind-boggling though
For one, when did he pay into SS? Apparently he was in the military for 20 years and thus has been collecting a major's pension for the last 30 years. I guess I remember now he had some high-paying civil service job for a few years. What was it, ten or 15 years? He could not have paid very much in over 15 years and now he collects $23,157 in 2007?

According to my social security earnings report I made $24,120 in 2005. And if I keep working at that pay until I am 67 (another 23 years!!) I can collect a whopping $988 a month. Which is $11,856 a year, and that is in the year 2029!! Yet he collects $23,157 today.

That is some screwed up system.

SSI has nothing to do with your income, not at any point in time. Not unless he had the program for people who never paid in enough to make an ssi claim, I think that one might be income dependent.

My husband, who is a teacher, is subjected to the offset. How is McCain eligible for the SS income with his salary and Naval pension?

My husband, who earns much, much less as a teacher will forfeit much (if not all) his SS he paid in before he became a teacher.

Social Security Income 2006 & 2007: $22,104, $23,157

SUMMARY OF SENATOR MCCAIN'S ACTUAL (NOT COMMUNAL) INCOME

2006 2007

Senate Salary: $161,675 $161,708
Book Royalty Income: $80,390 $176,508
Social Security Income: $22,104 $23,157
US Navy Pension*: $56,496 $58,358

43. The US military joined the SS program in '55 or '56.
When you are 62 or older, you have to apply for your SS retirement. McCain obviously did apply. When drawing SS and working, you continue to pay into SS and medicare as part of the usual payroll taxes.

Obviously, McCain is a triple dipper: SS+military retirement+ his Senatorial salary(retirement pension when he is no longer in the senate). If he were to become president and survive one or two terms, he would be adding yet another pension to what he is drawing now.
