My 85 year old Irish Catholic grandma is voting for OBAMA tomorrow!

Just got off the phone with her; she was undecided but lately hasn't liked the way Hillary is campaigning. We talked for awhile and I told her all the reasons I voted for Obama. When we hung up she said she's made up her mind and will vote for him.

My Dad will drive her to her polling place tomorrow since she doesn't drive anymore. Sharp as a tack though!

Although I confess that she was never undecided, at least not since Edwards dropped out. I didn't know this until recently, but she marched with King and was present for his "I Have a Dream" speech, and she protested unfair lending practices and discriminatory housing laws when she was in college. She went canvassing with me on Saturday, and she said that she never thought she'd see a black candidate with a chance to become president in her lifetime. Unlike many older women who are voting for Hillary because they want to see a woman president in their lifetimes (which is perfectly understandable, and I am not knocking them for it), for my grandmother I think seeing an African American president would be even more of a vindication of a dream, the fulfillment of something she worked hard for throughout her life.

(need I say for the first time?) that educated white people and the very young (Go go go go, kidsssssssssssss!!1! You are a blessing to us oldsters) are going for a black man. Things have already changed.

She wants the best person for this country and recognizes it's Obama. :hi:

My mother in law (just turned 84) voted for Clinton in the caucus (even spoke for her) ... However, she likes Obama as well and has mentioned a few times that she might "switch" over to him. (Not that it really matters ... she will support the nominee enthusiastically in the fall.

Just curious, is she Pro-Life?

I'm a fallen Catholic, but I don't want to criticize her or the church.

I just have a theory that perhaps some of what I heard about going on in Catholic parishes, in '00 and '04 pResiential phone banks, is now being countered by those who are taking the responsibility to make the connection between Pro-Life and Anti-War. Just a theory, but this issue has got to be the elephant in the room for Catholics, i.e. the hypocrisy of being Pro-Life and Pro-War, and Hillary doesn't "solve" the problem.

And, Obama, though he IS Pro-Choice, is overall a more classically Pro-Life candidate on ALL of the Social Justice issues, more consistent with Cardinal Bernardin's "Seamless Cloak of Life", in addition to which he is also more anti-War than HC.

Just a theory . . .

She's had quite a life and when we talk, she sounds 'young'. Very pragmatic but still very Catholic. Prays for Notre Dame to win football games, lol. :hi:
