Amazing.

That "Blonde" managed to get all those "Blind" people to turn out in droves to vote.

Just for future reference.

30. And it probably means that running on an "Oooo! Yuck! McCain is, like old 'n stuff"
platform is not such a good idea.

The whole kool kiddies attitude needs to go: it's not very effective to campaign against "the uneducated" in a nation where only about a fifth of voters have college degrees, or to blame all of the nation's problems on the old when old folks are the only demographic that votes in large numbers.

40. For a lot of people at DU, and this is nothing new, politics
is not about winning elections in order to take power and make changes in the world.

It is, instead, about preening and posing and declaring one's moral and intellectual superiority to the unwashed masses. Politics, for these people, serves as a religion substitute spiced up with a bit of therapy and performance art.

That attitude has always been around, but it's become especially common these past few months.

72. Sad but true. I just read here that PA has lots of racists, dumb people,

and mean old women, an obvious declaration of the poster's intellectual and moral superiority.

But wait -- aren't we Dems supposed to like the ordinary people? Should we be ASSuming those things about voters?

Maybe the voters in PA think Obama is an arrogant snob without enough experience to be president.

That's what I think. I also think it's a damned shame that the first black candidate to get this far in the primaries is a guy with so many connections to people of questionable ethics. It's going to get ugly and some people who support BO will see how blind they have been.

I will not support Hillary Clinton for president
January 20, 2006

AUSTIN, Texas --- I'd like to make it clear to the people who run the Democratic Party that I will not support Hillary Clinton for president.

Enough. Enough triangulation, calculation and equivocation. Enough clever straddling, enough not offending anyone This is not a Dick Morris election. Sen. Clinton is apparently incapable of taking a clear stand on the war in Iraq, and that alone is enough to disqualify her. Her failure to speak out on Terri Schiavo, not to mention that gross pandering on flag-burning, are just contemptible little dodges.

The recent death of Gene McCarthy reminded me of a lesson I spent a long, long time unlearning, so now I have to re-learn it. It's about political courage and heroes, and when a country is desperate for leadership. There are times when regular politics will not do, and this is one of those times. There are times a country is so tired of bull that only the truth can provide relief.

...as a Molly 'surrogate'. But I also doubt that she would have viewed an 8 to 10 point margin in this instance to be a "significant win" in view of the fact that same candidate had a 20-point-plus lead a few weeks ago.

Molly had common sense - which included an ability to deal with simple math.

91. Yeah, and Obama had six weeks of air time and limitless money to burn
Edited on Wed Apr-23-08 02:33 PM by dbaker41
And he still lost. By NINE. I'd just about bet that if the money were equal, and there hadn't been such a ridiculous amount of lag time between primaries, she would have won bigger (especially since Obama went negative at the end).

What happened to all the predictions on Monday and early Tuesday here, that Obama would pull the rabbit out of his magic hat and WIN Pennsylvania?

101. According to the polls ...
... Hillary had a 20+ point lead in PA on Obama in early March. She managed to win by 9.

The fact that Obama had more 'money to burn' is due to the fact that he is raising more money. His contributors send that money for the sole purpose of using it.

Are you suggesting he should be limited to spending what Hill spends - you know, Hillary whose campaign was blowing millions back in January, because she was going to have the nomination "all wrapped up" by Super Tuesday?

108. No, I just find it amusing that the same people who once decried money in politics
And were all for public financing of elections, now are crowing about how much $$$ Obama has raised. I guess it's different (hell, of course it's different) when your candidate is the one with the deep pockets.

109. Just because your gal blew her financial wad ...
... back in January, because she'd have the nomination "all wrapped-up" by Super Tuesday, don't come cryin' now.

Obama's raising of funds is reflective of his massive support; ergo, braggin' rights.

And funny, I don't recall the Hill campers discussing the "deep pockets" factor when she was rolling in dough.

I just hope she has the decency to pay her debts to the small business vendors who she's stiffed - but I'm not holding my breath, "decency" not being her strong suit.

107. When he spends millions and millions on ads and still can't win
Edited on Thu Apr-24-08 08:48 AM by Evergreen Emerald
he has a problem. People with the funds to bombard the area with ads usually wins. And he did that. Land, air and sea they were pummeled with millions and millions of dollars worth of ads. And the "blond" is still standing.

90. Did you see the demographic breakdown on voters RE race?
Yes, it would indeed appear that there was a significant racist element among Hillary voters. Sad that we still have people like that in our party.

92. Why do you assume that white people who don't vote for Obama are racist?
Should we then also assume that AAs who vote FOR Obama are doing it because of his race?

98. Yes, it is.
Nobody wants to talk about it, but there's a measurable segment of voters in PA who voted for Hillary because they don't want a black president.

This forum is entirely too reactionary to have a thoughtful discussion about racism, and why it's different when white voters vote based on race than it is when black voters vote based on race (hint: it has to do with the very definition of racism).

I've been here since DU's very first days (my original nic was Not_over_it), and I've seen many attempts at discussing this on DU go down in ugly, angry flames. I'm not going to even attempt it anymore here, but I'm also not going to ignore the fact that it's playing a part in this race, and not in a way that anybody should take any pride in.

And before anybody else brings it up, yes, I do think there's been sexism (against Hillary) in the primary, too (I'm a woman, btw), but I don't think it's been anywhere near as rampant or as ugly as the racism has been. The racist garbage I've seen this election season (and I'm not referring strictly to DU) has taken my breath away.

(and for the zillionth time, I'm not even an Obama supporter--I'm an Edwards supporter who'll vote for the eventual nominee)

For myself, I'm not going to vote in our primary. I will vote for the nominee in November, because it is better than the Evil Party winning again. I really don't care about either candidate - my guy's already out of the race. But it is very amusing to see all the people who have claimed Hillary was exactly the same as McCain, or the AntiChrist, or a secret Repub mole, etc. etc get their asses handed to them.

Face it:

More people in PA voted for Hillary than Obama.

They did it because they like what she has said, not because they are racists, or stupid, or Repubs trying to throw the election. She has more of an appeal to people who feel disenfranchised by the system, whether it is because they are poor, or out of work, or rural, or whatever. The Obama camp would be wise to try and determine exactly why that is, rather than simply trying to denigrate the people who didn't vote for Obama as being too stupid to know what is good for them.

On edit: It also might behoove some of the Obama camp on this site to realize that other people, who also belong to this site, have opinions which are every bit as valid as their own.
