A letter from Dr. Maya Angelou
An Open Letter from Dr. Maya Angelou

Dear Friend:
I am writing to tell you about my friend, Hillary Clinton, and why I am standing with her in her campaign for the presidency. I know the kind of president Hillary Clinton will be because I know the person she is.
I am inspired by her courage and her honesty. She is a reliable and trustworthy person. She is someone I not only admire but one for whom I have profound affection.
Hillary does not waver in standing up for those who need a champion. She has always been a passionate protector of families. As a child, she was taught that all God's children are equal, and as a mother, she understood that her child wasn't safe unless all children were safe. As I wrote about Hillary recently in a praise song: "She is the prayer of every woman, and every man who longs for fair play, healthy families, good schools and a balanced economy."
It may be easy to view Hillary Clinton through the narrow lens of those who would write her off or grind her down. Hillary sees us as we are, black and brown and white and yellow and pink and relishes our differences knowing that fundamentally we are all more alike than we are unalike. She is able to look through complexion and see community.
She has endured great scrutiny, and still she dares greatly. Hillary Clinton will not give up on you, and all she asks is that you do not give up on her. She is a long-distance runner. I am honored to say I am with her for the long run.
I am supporting Hillary Clinton because I know that she will make the most positive difference in people's lives and she will help our country become what it can be. Whether you are her supporter, leaning towards her, undecided, or supporting someone else, I believe Hillary Clinton will represent you – she will be a president for all Americans. It is no small thing that along the way we will make history together.
Vote for Hillary Clinton and show your support at www.hillaryclinton.com. I know she will make us proud.

36. I just wished people would show some respect for Maya
She is a wonderful, good hearted person. All she has is love in her heart for everyone. She is from my home state and she and the Clinton's have a very close loving connection. I wouldn't doubt Chelsea is Maya's god daughter, this is how close they are. To show disrespect for Maya is the lowest of the low. I pity anyone who does.

5. Good for Hillary...
At the beginning of the primary season, before her campaign started acting like poo flinging monkeys, I would have been happy with either candidate. I'll still vote for the democrat, but if it's Hillary, I'll feel the need to shower afterwards...

Yeah, ain't it weird, I can respect her and still dislike some of the things she likes.

country music and hillary, on those two things, imho, she is wrong. x(

44. I thought "don't play me small" was a WONDERFUL comeback
For someone to suggest Oprah was letting down her gender by not supporting hillary, that person WAS playing her small. Further, to suggest she is supporting Obama because they have race in common, that, too is playing her small. She said, quite eloquently, that she is simply supporting Obama because he is BRILLIANT.

{And, let's see....Oprah or Maya Angelou...Oprah never endorsed anyone before and felt compelled to come out for Obama. Maya delivered the poem at one of clinton's inauguration - who knows, maybe she wanted to avoid being referred to as "judas" - the clintons do that, you know}.

12. Excuse me isn't Maya a friend of Rev. Wright?
Doesn't that in Hitlerys world mean that she also hates America. How dare Hillary keep a woman like that on her campaign. I'm not sure about this, but it's hard to follow the McCarthy/Hillary logic.

I have always admired you, and been inspired by the way you see the world. But this time, I think you are wrong. Though Hillary and I share a gender, a skin color, and an age bracket, she cannot represent me.
Barack Obama envisions the world I envision. He speaks to my heart, my soul, and my mind. I respect his integrity, his intelligence, and his profound belief in the ability of human beings to work together. I believe he is an honorable man who will help us to once again, respect ourselves, and once again, earn the respect of the world.

23. behold: hillary clinton!
hail to you, o' shining raiser of children!
our villages and villagers are elevated
through your favor and acknowledgement
if not your $109 million-
it may take a village to raise a child,
but it takes more than a few misstatements
to derail you, my bogarting, bosomed kin

ashe, sister, shooter of ducks!
ashe! as i pronounce from every mountain top-
and may God's every feathered creature
spare you the wrath of their poop
upon thine expensively-coiffed and peroxided locks

courage, o' dodger of bullets and tough questions!
for the enemies are nigh, and are legion-
may their sniper rounds and honest inquiries
continue to fail to reach you

strength, o' wombed one!
because you, just as the phoenix of yore,
and the inflation rates and gas prices of now,
and obama's delegate count,
and the bile of many within earshot of you-

still-

you rise

24. Somebody clue 80 year old Maya in on the HRC's cluster bomb vote and the maimed Lebanese kids
Edited on Thu Apr-24-08 04:03 PM by Divernan
Or closer to home, tell her how HRC is using her brother Tony to fundraise, i.e., they are still in close, regular contact, but Tony is over $150,000 in arrears in child support (as of his last court appearance in November, 2007).

Google Tony Clinton/child support for lots of articles
or just go to the Wikepedia entry on Tony Clinton

Maya, how can you say HRC is a "passionate protector of families" when she enables her sleazy brother in neglecting his only son, and HRC's only niece/nephew?

Yes Hillary "It Takes a Village to Raise a Child" Clinton is a DEADBEAT AUNT. Explain it to us Auntie Hill - does that village include maybe AUNTS telling their deadbeat brothers to live up to their parental obligations. Especially deadbeat brothers who are out there raising funds for you and therefore acting as your agent/representative in your campaign? If HRC doesn't care enough about her own nephew/Chelsea's cousin, to deliver a shake of the famous Clinton finger and a stern "Shame on You", on behalf of her own nephew, then why should she care about ANY American child? or Iranian child? or Iraqi child? Or all those Lebanese kids crippled, maimed and killed by the cluster bombs she could not bring herself to vote against? And it would also seem that the Rodham siblings have a problem in paying off their debts.

Even if Hillary doesn't give a shit about her 10 year old nephew, you would think that just in the course of her campaign vetting her, they would check for any outstanding legal actions against immediate family members, and have advised her to loan her brother the money to get up to date on the child support payments.

Or is there some "New Feminism" that doesn't believe in child support?

27. Maya read her poem at clinton's inauguration
She also came from the same town Hope, Ark as Clinton. She is loyal to her friends. Her endorsement of Clinton obviously reflects this fact.

I think I would be surprised if Angelou cast her vote for Obama given her history with the Clintons. While I personally am unconvinced that HRC is the best candidate, I respect Angelou's point of view.

39. I think Angelou has nailed a big part of Clinton's appeal...
...as essentially nostalgic, whether she realizes it or not. Tens of millions of Americans recall the Clinton era fondly as a time of relative prosperity, and the Clintons themselves as the solid rock that endured despite a fundamental change in the political weather.

As for me, a candidate's merely having been around a long time is no longer a great reason for my support--quite the reverse, in fact--but I may be in the minority.
