I'm trying to decide if I could live with a Clinton staffer
Edited on Fri Apr-25-08 06:09 PM by democrattotheend
So I have been searching for a roommate for a while, and today someone I know from college e-mailed me to see if the room was still available. She sounds like a good fit in most respects, except for the fact that she works for the Clinton campaign. She's in North Carolina right now campaigning for Hillary, and ironically, if I confirmed her as a roommate I'd be able to go down there this weekend to campaign for Obama.

I think it'll probably be fine...I've lived with a Republican before and we didn't kill each other, and I get along with the Clinton supporters here for the most part (and the few I know in real life; most of the staff in my office and most of my friends are for Obama). But somehow I feel funny about it, especially since she actually works for the Clinton campaign, rather than just being a supporter. I come home most days talking to my mom about the campaign on the phone and it would just be awkward.

My gut is telling me that this is nonsense, and besides, if things go our way this girl could (unfortunately) be out of a job in a few weeks anyway. I guess that should give me extra motivation to go to North Carolina and work hard for Obama.

What do you guys think? Fellow Obama supporters (and Clinton supporters), what would you do in my position?

UPDATE: I am not actually thinking about turning this girl away just because she is a Clinton supporter. I just thought it would make an interesting discussion. I am glad to hear that most people here seem to not hate people who support the other candidate in real life as much as they do on DU.

2. Good point, LOL
I am trying to figure out if there's a tactful way to ask her "what happens if your candidate drops out after Indiana"? She has a lot of connections though, and I am sure she'd find another job quickly. Plus she said she has parents who would help.

are sure you will get the rent..

25. She won't be employed for long
but when its over you'll find you have everything in common that you used too.

Beyond the highest levels, Clinton staffers are Democrats.

3. Only on DU are Clinton supporters the enemy.
In the real world I'm sure this person will probably make a fantastic roommate. Don't let the stupidity here make you lose out on that.

23. well I don't know a lot of Bush backing GOPers anymore
Edited on Fri Apr-25-08 06:35 PM by crankychatter
When I meet them doing business (usually fundies and sales types)... I often will just not do business with them. I think social pathology and dishonesty are a top down epidemic in this country... it's a corporate culture.

My conservative FRIENDS on the other hand, are ASHAMED they voted for Bush... even the ones that are cacheting weapons in Eastern Washington and badmouthing "liberals."

Even out here in the midwest where I am now... I meet Republicans all the time, that given the chance, will vote for Obama... hands down.

anyone that questions his viability needs to get out in the heartland and talk to folks a bit more.

Anti-war sentiment among Republicans is one of the most under-reported stories by the MSM.

5. Well, ask her how she's going to pay the rent after the campaign is over (without specifying when)
That'll probably tell you a lot.

6. Yeah, I am a little worried about that. I'd feel the same way about an Obama staffer (less so)
Campaign employment is by nature unstable, and checks often get delayed. But she said her parents could help her if she needs it.

7. Here is some advice
She is a Dem, campaigning for a Dem, in a Dem primary. Very soon that primary will end. Then you with both be Dems supporting the Dem in the GE. You could miss out on a really good roommate and friend because you after worried about what is really just a matter of weeks.

I hope this helps.

9. Yeah, you're right
If things go our way she'll be an Obama supporter within a few weeks. She did say in our IM chat earlier that she would support Obama if he got the nomination. She has political ambitions of her own, so she's not someone who would sit this out if she doesn't get her way.

10. A Clinton supporter I know has terminal leukemia
I mean seriously, come on. The campaign isn't everything. If you aren't worried about her being out of a job, go for it. It'll be tons of fun to have the campaign season ahead of you.

11. I suggest you talk to HER about it and
express your concerns and thoughts. Give her the heads up that you usually talk to your mom about it on the phone, and that most of your friends are supporting Obama. I don't know if I'd go so far as to admit I'm a member of DU! On the other hand, she might be very familiar with DU and in fact one of those who has vacated recently. Anyway, you'll get a gut feeling on whether or not this might be an issue.

I would hope that person to person, it'll be fine. Like we all come together here for a common cause, leaving our vitriol behind.

12. I like all the Clinton supporters I know in real life. If she's a pro, she knows it's just politics,
and if she's good at what she does, she might land a job with the DNC working for Obama after he's the universally recognized nominee.

I say go for it, if you would otherwise go for it except that she's a paid staffer for the Clinton campaign.

14. Do you let politics dominate your life?
I sure hope not, but if you do, don't do it. I live in a gated community that is 90% republican. If I let politics decide who my friends were, I wouldn't have many here. We don't talk politics, we just go about life like 99% of the population.

19. Sadly, pretty much
I live in the DC area and work in the political department for a labor organization. I went to school at American University and most of my friends there were pretty political, as are my friends from work. Most of my friends are either from school or work, or people I have met at political happy hours. I go through periods where I am more intensely into it than others, but yeah, in my world, who someone supports for president is generally one of the first topics of conversation. Most of the time I wouldn't have it any other way, except days like this past Wednesday, when my boss asked me to crunch numbers from the Pennsylvania primary and I said "can't we just forget about the Pennsylvania primary?"

24. I understand
....but I do not let politics run my life. My neice worked for Laura Bush in the whitehouse, and then became a forward person for Condi Rice. Most of my wife's family are staunch republicans, as are mine, but we are the exceptions. We have both been staunch democrats since we became old enough to vote. So, I guess that's where I learned how to keep politics out of any discussions we had, although we would kick their butts every time there was a mention of it! I've been here on DU since 2001, and have read here daily ever since.

18. Run away from this Clinton staffer like Obama runs away from debates!
Clinton supporters have cooties and they will infest you with brain parasites, and before you know it, you'll find yourtself deprogrammed and marching in a Hillary parade.

Everyone knows that Clinton and all her supporters are fiends from another dimension, sent here by the evil Wizard Juthuru to colonize our planet. But first, they have to take over the minds of the only pure and noble people left on Earth -- the Obamanians.

Those are the facts! But you'll never get those evil Clintonians to admit it.

They bad.

I just wonder if it would be awkward, like whether she would feel like she can't take work-related phone calls in the apartment and stuff.

22. Honestly, I would have a serious talk about it beforehand...
I had the displeasure of interacting with a few female Clinton staffers here in Philly. It wasn't pretty. I got along just fine with the guys, but for some reason (gender traitor?) the women were quite nasty to me; insults, name calling, etc. They seriously couldn't be reasoned with. They were starting fights with every Obama supporter. I still can't figure out why they were so hostile.

So yeah, I would have a serious discussion. Hostile roommate situations suuuuuck.
