Now we're down to two. And we're down - a word I use advisedly - to Obama's ex-preacher, Clinton's memory lapses in Bosnia and American flag lapel pins.
Clinton and Obama supporters are increasingly polarized. Even in such decorous venues as NPR's Diane Rehm Show and Talk of the Nation, when the subject is this election, it's easy to hear the strain in the voices of the callers who favor one of the two candidates and who simply cannot understand why their candidate shouldn't get the brass ring. Worse, there's an increasing note of pique, to put it mildly. Why are the media, the party elders, even the fates conspiring to deprive their candidate of his or her rightful due?
The inexorable math of the actual delegate tally apparently doesn't count. No one can begin to understand the Byzantine rules that govern delegate selection. Adding to the angst, for the first time in American history Democrats are on the verge of nominating either an African-American man or a woman. Both have been historically marginalized. For their champions, this is payback, entitlement time.
Each candidate vows to push on - Indiana! Montana! Guam! And reporters, especially the loudmouths of cable's 24-hour news channels, are hell-bent on keeping the contest alive as long as they can. Last week one prominent political scribe said he hoped it kept going "because I'd like to go to Puerto Rico." Honest.
"I will never, ever vote for Hillary Clinton," said Sara. "I just won't." She was echoing the sentiments of people on
either side who defiantly tell pollsters and anyone else willing to listen that it's their candidate or no one.COME TOGETHER!
