If Obama does not win the Democratic nomination,
would you support his candidacy as an independent?

1. No.
Split the party vote and McSame wins.

But I suspect you knew this before posting?

3. No. He will never run as an independent. Neither will Hillary.
There would be nothing to support.

23. Hillry has the DLC lined up to "take back the democratic party from the elitist"
Edited on Thu May-01-08 09:10 PM by Boz
The DLC has formed a shadow DNC, covering and copying all aspects of support and processes they provide.

Shes not damaging him for a 2012 swoop, she is damaging him to run against in THIS election cycle.

That is why she is pandering to the right on the gas tax and Iran, she knows she will have to siphon both parties voters.

4. In principle I would; in reality, I wouldn't.
And I would hope that he doesn't go independent. If he does, I think that would definitely hand the vote to McCain.

It really is too bad we only have two parties in this country. It consistently totally fucks us over.

5. No, because an independent can not win
not in the set up we have right now. Any independent is a spoiler and to vote for one is to give the main canidate with the views farthest from your own the equivalent of half a vote.

It would be tempting, because I really believe that Obama is a genuine and decent person and that's rare among politicians, particularly those running for president. But we have to think about what's best for this country. Plus, he has a future in the party even if he's not the nominee, and that would be destroyed and he'd become a joke if he ran as an independent.

11. I cannot say at this time.
FWIW, I'm already on record as saying that I wouldn't be supporting Hillary if she were the nominee chosen based on racism, I mean "electability".

12. On principle, yes...in reality, no.
I may loathe Clinton. I may feel that she will damage this country. I may feel a moral abhorrence to letting the dirty fighter win.

That said, NO independent candidate stands a chance against either the Dem or Repub candidate in the general.

Clinton may be a monster, but she's better than McCain and four more years of Republican rule. If she wins the nomination, I will hold my nose and vote for her...and shower in lye immediately afterward.

13. No. Three candidates in our system just doesn't work.
Edited on Thu May-01-08 08:30 PM by bhikkhu
There is a whole branch of math studying election methods - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voting_system for a good run-down - and there is really no scenario, short of a complete party-system breakdown, where you get a good result. A winner without a mandate or popular support would be a bad thing.

14. No. One goal is to nominate him, and I think that goal will be realized.
If it happens that he is not the Democratic nominee but ran as an independent (I can't even picture that happening, actually), the demographics suggest that he would be handing the White House keys to John McCain, a man who is antithetical to everything Obama stands for.

Ain't gonna happen.
