In polls, Clinton picking up steam, Obama sputtering
Pa. primary, controversies fuel shift
By Globe Staff | May 2, 2008

A slew of new national polls, plus surveys in Indiana and North Carolina - which hold key primaries Tuesday - suggest that Hillary Clinton is closing the gap since her campaign-saving victory in Pennsylvania last week and that the controversies dogging Barack Obama are having an impact.

In North Carolina, a new Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. poll out yesterday indicated that Obama's lead among likely primary voters had narrowed to 49 percent to 42 percent, while a Research 2000 survey put his lead at 51 percent to 44 percent. He had double-digit leads in most prior polling.

And in Indiana, where the race had been a tossup in surveys last week, Clinton led in the three most recent polls. She is ahead 46 percent to 41 percent in a Rasmussen survey, 50 percent to 42 percent in a Public Polling Policy survey, and 52 percent to 43 percent in a SurveyUSA poll.

Obama's support also appeared to be slipping in an array of national polls.

Congratulations Clinton and supporters! The strategy of damaging Obama (since his nomination is mathematically inevitable) so much that he can't defeat McCain in November may be working out.

1. Fear Uncertainty Doubt
that's all The Clinton's have left to run on.
Spinning themselves right into the ground.
It's unfortunate but funny. Classic failure.

2. It is not her job to boost Obama -- get some perspective
The first black and the first woman are battling for the Democrat nomination.

There is nothing inevitable about the outcome until the last ballot is cast in Denver.

The superdelegates' job is to rescue the party from the defeat of a candidate who tanks late, a system put in place after the McGovern debacle.

4. No disrespect intended, but please think about what you are
saying. Any real damage, Obama did to himself. Sounding as if he
was dissing the blue collar workers. Hillary did not choose his
pastor. This has been painful for him I am sure and I do empathize.
For honest observers, in a political sense --Hillary has always
been the stronger candidate.

There is a reality--Obama is going to be the Democratic Candidate.
Race trumps gender. McCain win

If Obama were such a strong candidate he would not be having problems.
The Media have carried him along to the point--that average Americans
see him as weak. Hillary has been beaten up on. No help only disdain
from the Media. She is weathering her storms.

A Person who runs for President cannot say, I can win if the other
guy does not attack me. Presidential Elections are not bean bag.

Yes, the Superdelegates have chosen their horse and as in the past,
they are not good at choosing winners.

Telling Hillary to get out makes the American People think. Stop
Hillary, You are so strong you make Obama look bad.

This is meant to make people think.

6. "campaign-saving victory" in PA?
How so?

Man, the spin on this one is of such velocity you could get enough wind-based energy off it to power a whole city. Maybe that would be the solution to the energy problem - just put up windmills around the lamestream media spin and capture that.

Pfft!

7. Which thread should I read?
This one says the new polls favor Hillary. But this other one says they favor Obama:

RRRRRRRRRRRRRRREBOUND: Polls point to Barack blowout in NC, push in IN, GE win vs. McHundred

Do pairs of threads like this cancel each other out? I read both, but to be honest I wish I had read neither instead.

8. Consult the IEM
The Iowa Electronic Market is running 74.3 : 22.1 Obama : Clinton, and considering that the IEM has historically been much more accurate than polls I'd say Obama's the nominee.
