The next President: a one term wonder?
A friend expressed this theory yesterday. She said that the country has so many terrible problems, none of which will be solved in a instant or even in 4 years. She thinks people want a quick fix and if they don't get it they'll throw the next President out after one term.

Any thoughts here on that theory?

1. I've had that thought as well
Which is why part of me is not so opposed to a Clinton/Obama ticket. If he became VP for 4 years and then they lost he'd probably get the nomination in 8 years, and nobody could call him inexperienced then. If Obama runs for VP now, either way he'll be the frontrunner for the nomination in 4 or 8 years.

2. Any new president faces that risk. It's still a risk worth taking.
And after 8 years of Dumbya, we need a president who will take on the job of trying to solve our problems, so willing to take risks.

4. I can see that happening.
And I'm so fed up by the MSM and the dumb public who swallows everything they spew that maybe a McInsane presidency is what we deserve.

But then I think about all those people in other countries who will suffer needlessly because of the horror show his foreign policy will be.

I dont think so-

Obama has two things going for him here-

1. he talks to the public like they are adults
2. he does not make absurd pandering promises

I think term 2 will follow quite naturally.

Now whether HRC will be re-elected in NY is another story!

5. Pobabaly accurate. The next President has a helluva mess to clean up.
We are just starting to feel the Iraq War Recession, it took 5 years for the impact to be undeniable. Now we have much more shit to hit the fan. A five year lag time, a lot was messed up royally in that time.

That is why we need someone who has a thoughtful level head, as an example, and an ability to speak to the American People. One of the big jobs of the next PResident will be to remind us to stay calm, and be ready to put in the effort.

6. I'm a strong believer
that if the nominee levels with the people, lays out what exactly we're facing and what it will take to turn things around, the American people will do what it takes and weather the hard times.

That's one of the reasons I liked Biden so much - he always told it like it was, even though it wasn't what most of us wanted to hear.

7. Yes, that seems very likely. But hopefully a Democrat can change the trajectory.

9. Almost certain, I would say.
The economy, oil prices, food shortages, fertilizer supply being depleted, the housing meltdown. Things are just going to go from bad to worse for at least a couple of years. Some problems, like oil depletion, may well be permanent. Whoever is in office when gasoline hits $10 a gallon and inflation goes double digits will be the scape goat.

10. Its always a chance, but why did we re-elect the guy who was
screwing it all up in the first place.

By re-elect, I mean close enough to steal.

11. Been thinking that for quite a while now
The country hasn't been this screwed up in quite a while ... not since Nixon resigned. And we all know what happened to Jimmy Carter ... a reformer who came into office promising change and trying to lead a divided party.

12. I don't believe so
Just having a Dem President will make a big difference for the good (though we'll still have problems).

13. Maybe so. But problems can get better or they can get worse....
I don't want to see worse myself, so I will vote for the Democrat. And hope for the best in another four years.

14. Can't possibly think that far ahead.
We're so involved with the PRIMARY right now, I can hardly begin to imagine where we will be 4 years from NOW. Too much can happen between now and then to possibly venture a guess.

15. I agree, except I call the next president another Hoover
I know this probably isn't a popular opinion on DU, but I'm not positive I want us to win in November. The Supreme Court is the only benefit I see to a Dem victory in November, and I agree that is a big benefit. When Warren Buffet says this recession is going to be bad, I listen, and I just think that the next president is about to be hit with an economic hurricane like we haven't seen for a few generations.

I am not saying that I want the republicans to win, just that I for once won't be completely devastated if we lose.
