NRCC Ads Using Obama Fail! Dem. Cazayoux Wins Special Election!
Edited on Sat May-03-08 10:00 PM by Avalon6
http://electionresults.sos.louisiana.gov/050308state.htm

We just picked up a seat in Congress!

NRCC tried to use this ad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8ImjX-0aq0) to attack Cazayoux

49. Excuse me but the ads run by the NRCC used HRC, Obama and
Pelosi in them. So, lets not get all hyper and say it was obama only. Republicans are attempting to spin tonight's loss, which was closer than some recent polls had suggested, as a sign that Obama, Clinton and Pelosi are liabilities for Democrats in the fall campaign. In addition, the NRCC pointed out that special elections are not always reliable barometers for what happens in November.UH HUH

The National Republican Congressional Committee and several conservative groups poured nearly $1 million into the race in an effort to tie Cazayoux to Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). The ads called the state representative "too liberal" for the district.

Good win for the Dems and hopefully we can add another Dem Senator come November when Musgrove defeats Wicker, who replaced Lott. Also, the race for Wicker's seat is a lot closer because Greg Davis is a stronger opponent for the Dem candidate Travis Childers.....Internal polling show Childers with 48 to Davis' 47 and 5% undecided.....In the Senate race Musgrove the ex govenor has a 6 point lead over Wicker.

12. How did we win an R+7 district?
Edited on Sat May-03-08 10:04 PM by Eric J in MN
Was there a scandal or something?

Update:

I found this at wikipedia:
=========================================================
If Cazayoux wins, he will be the first Democrat to represent this district since 1975. While Democrats have a 21-point advantage in registration, the 6th has a strong tinge of social conservatism that favors Republicans. However, it has seen a large influx of black voters who fled New Orleans due to Hurricane Katrina.<5>

Cazayoux is a moderate-to-conservative Democrat, which is typical for most Louisiana Democrats outside the New Orleans area. He strongly opposes abortion and gun control.<6> The latter stance earned him an "A" rating from the National Rifle Association.<7> However, he supports expanding SCHIP, and also favors pulling out of Iraq. He calls himself "a John Breaux Democrat."<8>

And the DCCC had an ass kicking ground game down there, further validation of the 50 state strategy.

You just *cannot* let these R's rest for a minute, no matter how red the district looks.

57. THAT'S the real news, not the Obama ad
It's a heavily Republican district, and the cash-strapped NRCC spent a significant chunk of its bankroll there (about half a million, leaving it with about $6 million). Nevertheless, the Democrat won.

The Votemaster (proprietor of the invaluable electoral-vote.com website) has it right:
By tomorrow every Republican in the House is going to be thinking "There but for the grace of God go I." If a well-known strongly conservative GOP candidate with 28 years experience in the state legislature can't win an open seat in a heavily Republican district that the GOP has held since 1975, what is going to happen in the many open seats and marginal Republican districts in November?

That's what's currently posted at http://electoral-vote.com/ but I hope is a permanent link.

I personally think that Obama is better for our downticket races but I also think that we'll do well in November regardless of who wins the presidential nomination.

14. On the 1st district found this hilarous quote
Reed and Scalise to face off for 1st District Congressional seat

Mike Conti Reporting
The process to fill the first Congressional District seat vacated by now-Governor Bobby Jindal ends Saturday with the final election between Republican Steve Scalise and Democrat Gilda Reed.

Political analysts like Bernie Pinsonat agree it would be a monumental upset to see a Democrat win this seat.

"If Steve Scalise is alive and breathing Saturday night at 8 o'clock, he's the winner," said Pinsonat.

60. Obama had nothing to do with that win.
First, John Laesch ran against Hastert and got about forty percent of the vote, an amazing thing in that red district. That was during the Foley scandal. And people were sick of the war and sick of the republican corruption.

Hastert resigned after he lost his speakership. The special election was included a hard-fought primary between Foster and Laesch. The election itself was slated to be held during a time when there would be little outside influence from the primary or other state races.

The republicans would have had a chance if the Milk Nazi had not won the republican primary. He is a bigot and a perennial candidate. Lauzen should have been their candidate. We would have had a tough time beating him.

The organizations on the ground won it for Foster. DeKalb County in particular got the vote out in stunning fashion.

Local and state politics have many other factors besides the Presidential race. If you want to claim that Obama has coattails in November, should he win, that is fine. But even in Illinois, he is an ordinary politician who does not walk on water.

33. This is GREAT news for Obama and his supporters. Check out today's AP write-up on the race.
...

Democratic victories would be a serious setback for Republicans. But it also would go a long way to reassure nervous Democrats, particularly undecided superdelegates, that Obama would not present a hardship to House or Senate candidates running in tough races.

Democratic losses would give Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton new ammunition to build her case for her presidential candidacy by questioning the sturdiness of Obama's coattails.

``I think people want to know what chances we're going to be having in November if Obama is the nominee,'' said U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a Missouri Democrat who has endorsed Clinton.

``There are a host of judgments that superdelegates make,'' said Sen. Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat who has not endorsed either presidential candidate. ``Certainly a special election held close to a contested primary like this one could be very relevant.''

To me this is almost as big as winning Indiana on Tuesday.

This is a red state. This is a red district. The GOP tried to stick him with Obama at the height of "Wright Round 2" in a GOP deep southern district........ and WE STILL WON!

I think the FINAL question the Super-Delegates had was just answered!

39. Look at this AP article posted at Fox News.com with a crazy headline
http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/05/03/gop-retains-house-seat-in-louisiana-special-election

GOP Retains House Seat in Louisiana Special Election

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Republicans retained one House seat in two special elections being held in Louisiana.State Sen. Steve Scalise beat Democrat Gilda Reed 71 percent to 27 percent with 35 percent of precincts reporting.

Scalise takes over the 1st Congressional District in suburban New Orleans. It was formerly held by fellow Republican Bobby Jindal. He resigned in January before being sworn in as governor.

In the other race, Democrat Don Cazayoux won, bolstering his party’s majority status on Capitol Hill and taking a seat held by Republicans since 1974.

That's an interesting headline given the facts of the article. I'm going to hope/assume that Fox News came up with that headline and not the AP.

The Rs kept the 1st, but the Dems picked up the 6th from the Rs.

To them, that would have been priority because they are "fair and balanced".

This is great news for the Democratic Party, and for the future of American democracy. No amount of lies, no amount of fear-mongering, no amount of money could get a Republican elected in a VERY red district of Louisiana!

This portends great things for Democrats...if the votes are counted in November.
