LA Special Election - Don Cazayoux (D)
Edited on Sat May-03-08 10:17 PM by graycem
They've been playing that nasty GOP Rev.Wright ad, saying Obama would be a hinderance to the downticket races in November. Well, so far that theory doesn't look to be panning out. All of the results aren't quite in, but almost. 509 of 512 precincts in so far. Most of what's left is in/around Baton Rouge. Looking very good! And they spent thousands and thousands defending this seat. Ahhhh.

Results so far :

Candidate Votes % of Vote
Don Cazayoux (D) 49,371 49.14%
Woody Jenkins (R) 46,554 46.33%
Ashley Casey (I-R) 3,708 3.69%

*edited to add that this seat is being defended by the GOP.

1. Hmm
Without that I/R this would have gone the other way slightly. I hope we send help down there for the GE in November.

5. It's over
Via http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/192927.php">TPM

"Congratulations to Don Cazayoux on his hard fought victory. Don's independence and commitment to putting middle class Louisianans first inspired people from across the political spectrum to support his fight for change.
"For the second time this cycle, Republicans were reminded that 'all politics is local.' House Republicans tried to nationalize this election, illegally coordinated with Freedom's Watch, used false and deceptive special interest smears, and funneled nearly a million dollars into a district that Republicans held for more than three decades. Don won by focusing on the concerns of LA-06 voters -- good paying jobs, affordable health care, and better education.

"Don Cazayoux will be a tremendous asset to our Democratic Caucus, as we continue fighting to strengthen our economy and ease the squeeze on America's struggling middle class families."

That's from DCCC Chair Chris Van Hollen.

Woot!

6. TPM Josh Marshall: **"This is a really, really red district."** 30 years.
Has been in the hands of Republicans since the 70's.

Googling for results/reaction, seems like Fox News, very full of themselves, had announced it went to the GOP.

And the times, they are a changin' .

8. Fantastic news for Obama
The Clinton campaign was hoping for this candidate to lose so they could prove Obama's "unelectibility." I knew that was crap and the results show otherwise. Go Cazayoux and Go Obama!!!

10. I hope you are congratulating our next Democratic Congressman
I'm waiting for it. Your comments lead me to believe what I stated is, in fact, true. I'm awaiting Sen. Clinton's congratulations as well as the SDs who support her. Let me know when that happens. Also, please read the following article:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/feedarticle/7497837

"Democratic losses would give Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton new ammunition to build her case for her presidential candidacy by questioning the sturdiness of Obama's coattails.

"``I think people want to know what chances we're going to be having in November if Obama is the nominee,'' said U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a Missouri Democrat who has endorsed Clinton.

"``There are a host of judgments that superdelegates make,'' said Sen. Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat who has not endorsed either presidential candidate. ``Certainly a special election held close to a contested primary like this one could be very relevant.'' "

13. Republicans attempted to spin tonight's loss, which was closer than
some recent polls had suggested, as a sign that Obama, Clinton and Pelosi are liabilities for Democrats in the fall campaign. In addition, the NRCC pointed out that special elections are not always reliable barometers for what happens in November.

oh how I enjoy republican spin....

14. How long will it be before McCain throws Bush under his Straight Jacket Express Bus?
Bush is toxic to the GOP right now. They have absolutely no chance this fall.
