Once for the record: Why I support Obama
Edited on Sun May-04-08 12:56 AM by bhikkhu
First, I have been a lifelong skeptic as far as politics go. Nixon/McGovern is the first race I remember, and Carter was the first and last president I had any real hope in. I watched his agenda go to ruin while I was still a teenager, and it has colored my thinking since then.

Last fall Hillary entered the race and I just figured it would be another miserable crap-fest. She was more or less assured the nomination, but her negatives were high and battalions of haters (whose careers were built on tearing down Clintons) were more than ready to sell their souls to see her lose. It was hard to get enthused.

I followed the races enough to appreciate some of the other players – Kucinich, Edwards, Obama. They all had good reps, but who knew them? In the run-up to Iowa there was some news that things were not as they seemed – Obama had a message that was taking hold and people were genuinely moved. He won that primary in the best way – by talking to people and letting them get to know him. And the opposite seemed to happen with Hillary, for whatever reason.

That in itself got my interest, and looking into his platform and listening to him speak sealed it: out of the blue, here was someone who could not only win but change the power-hungry money-hungry hateful manner of campaigning we have become accustomed to. Its hard to express how absolutely new that is. He speaks sincerely, if not always easily, on complex issues. He has the same views on most things as I do, with an even temper and the manner of a compassionate man.

I have not changed my mind, and his work since has only increased my respect for him. Since Iowa Obama has steadily and consistently decreased the margins he needs to lock the nomination, and increased the margins that all others, and now just Hillary, need (though the media won't tell you that). The margins Hillary needs for a win are set to go from near impossible now to entirely impossible on May 6.

As FrenchieCat said in another post – Obama has been running against not just Hillary, but against the combined weight of the US media and corporate interests. In spite of the non-stop barrage of negativity, belittlement, distraction and sideshows set up against him from every type of media, he is still winning – as the people's choice. That's something I have never seen before, and that's why I support Obama.

23. LOL.
Obama hasn't won a big state and both MI and FL wouldn't have gone his way.
He is winning because we didn't learn about his fatal flaws until it was way too late.
Had Wright come out in say IA, or NH... he'd be back to warming the bench.

My guess is this presidential run has damaged him in the next run as state senator of IL.
Republicans smell blood and they're looking for a horse to kick his ass.
You can be sure they will bring up Wright, and if Wright were the pastor for an R, we'd be after his ass too.
Rightly so.

What pisses me off is the defense of Wright the racist.
It's bad when we go on defending that crap. Have we no standards anymore?
Are racist remarks OK from some quarters and not others?
That's where Obama-Wright has taken us.
Sick.

Super Delegates Vote Hillary.

25. Yeah, you just keep waiting ...
... for those SDs to install Hillary as the nominee over the choice of the people. That's how it's gonna go down - they can't wait to split the party and lose in November, all for the sake of massaging Hillary's ego.

Mm hmm, yeah, whatever. I'm sure it will all work out for Hill in the end. Because if there's one thing war-hating Democrats want in a candidate, it's someone who threatens to obliterate Iran.

Truly, that alone will get the SDs on board, don'tcha think?

Oh, forgot to add: Welcome to DU! Enjoy your stay!

26. "SD's will save Hillary" has been a mantra
How long can it be kept up contrary to evidence?

I know why the super-delegate system was contrived, but it has worked as it should in this primary. There has been no flood to Hillary in spite of massively covered and amplified gaffes and media-dramas. The SD's have held steady to their constituencies and commitments. Why should they do otherwise?

The essential is - all this, and he is winning. All this, and a Democrat is standing cool and whole, ready to take down the repug in the GE. Why does that piss you off?

4. Thank you-great post. Obama has never lost his cool or his integrity.
I agree; he's a phenomenon, despite all the roadblocks put up in front of him and the missteps he's supposed to have made. "Bitter"? Misconstrued. "Preacher"? Ridiculous, overblown, and the only thing the talking heads had to talk about.

I am very much in favor of Senator Obama, though I think that's evident.

And BTW, rec'd!

24. He lost both his cool, integrity, and believability
He fumbled through the last debate like a 9th grader.
Wright just nuked his integrity. No denounce today, denounce tomorrow for the same things that he defended as being taken "out of context".
Tons of integrity there. Not.

Hope.
Change.
Unite.
Simply unbelievable after the Rev. Wright fiasco.
He can't even unite our party, how will he do that beyond after Wright? He can't. He won't.
Mostly because he won't get elected.
He is badly damaged and fatally flawed.

Super Delegates Vote Hillary.

19. Not believing that things can be any better is America's most fundamental problem....
... Even if he had nothing else to offer - which he does - being a beacon of hope would be enough.

21. I like what he says about that -
"The president sets the tone". I don't think we need more than that to wade out of the fetid swamp that politics has been. "Sincerity" has always been the elusive key with me, whether in writing or in speech - an open heart, unguarded yet invulnerable. Obama has it.

There is something special about someone who is not weaving a tangled web, not guarded on every side, not weighing the advantages of all options in every statement...
