And, they're hoping we buy into the argument that there's nothing we can do to penalize the seemingly responsibility-free profit-taking from the oil giants who are raking in our cash and doing next to nothing to solve even the problems they say are responsible for high prices. The refinery excuse is laughable. They just want to ease the regulations that prevent these refineries from setting up shop where people are supposed to live, work, and breathe without any accountability for their pollution. The 'demand' argument is valid, up to the point where someone tries to claim that these poor oil companies are just too swamped and running out of oil to do anything to help lower the price.
The obvious remedy for the obscene profit-taking is to demand that the companies do something to alleviate the problems they claim led to the high prices for gas and oil. But, just building refineries won't cut it. This is outright thievery by the oil giants. And those who correctly argue that we need to adopt long-term strategies for reducing our reliance on oil need to also come to grips with the exploitation which will just worsen if we just address conservation alone.
We need a comprehensive plan to address the profit-taking which puts the oil giants on notice that Americans are fed up with turning over our hard-earned tax dollars to subsidize an industry which is getting fat from the contributions we've been conned out of, and, in the face of our timidity in refusing to confront the profit-takers at the source and demand they either reinvest or contribute some of the money we spend at their stations in an effort to bring the gas prices down to manageable levels.
But, whatever we're contemplating doing, you can be certain the oil companies will object, and will use EVERY lever they can get their hands on to influence us away from actually holding them accountable. But, I believe we will never see any movement from the industry until we extract some of their life-blood; the money we just fork over at their pumps and the money we fork over in tax subsidies and preferences.
They really like all of the pussyfooting around on this issue. They must especially like the attack on Hillary Clinton's plan for a gas tax holiday, because she's calling for paying for it by imposing a tax on windfall profits. But, I don't believe there will be ANY real movement from these companies until we threaten their unearned money; at the pump and Congress. We should be demanding this. No one should be allowed to talk us down from demanding an end to the profit taking with some mealy-mouthed timidity
