Challenge to Hillary supporters: Define "Elitist"
Edited on Sun May-04-08 01:09 PM by dave29
Since Hillary has become so fond of this word, I challenge you to define it in stark terms.

I've already learned I am an elitist (I think the gas tax holiday is a scam, and even though I did not receive a degree, and barely avoided bankruptcy due to my job being outsourced, I do currently make over 50k a year after 7 months of unemployment).

So, c'mon, give me your best shot. Tell me I'm an elitist to my face.

Edit to add, I also thought the IWR was a blank check at the time. Does this also make me elitist?

that the gas tax holiday is silly and is a political ploy. The fact is that our oil based economy is a real problem for us. We also know, thanks in part to Al Gore and ingenuity, that there are alternatives and the alternatives would make our society much better on a whole. This little "patch" is not the answer. You should say you'd rather here what she will do to stimulate alternative energies and what tax she'd like to use, rather than a gas tax, to improve infrastructure.. In the end a tax on gas is a pretty ridiculous way to maintain the roads. It doesn't provide much incentive for congress to change the fuel emission laws.. because that leads to a loss in revenue and that leads to crumbling roads, bridges, and pink slips.

not that i'm against things that make someone elite.

i'm just against when one of them accuses the other of the same thing.

6. If you want "elitists", look no futher than bush and McCain...
both got their educations simply because of who they were, not for merit.

For the record, for the educations they received, at where they received them, neither of them are all too bright. Neither would have been accepted on intellectual criteria, they were both "legacy" appointments. Just about as "elitist" as you can get.

8. I agree with you, but that doesn't answer why Hillary thinks I'm an elitist.
By virtue of my position on the gas tax holiday, and the fact that I happen to be a Barack Obama supporter. Not to mention my wife and I's current combined income of over 75k. We're practically made of money.

7. "If you disagree with my pandering, you're elitist"
This is really no different than grade school kids calling each other a "fag" or a slew of other names where they have no idea what the meaning of the word is. Bottom line, there is NO meaning for the word "elitist" as Hillary is using it, other than she thinks it will turn off working people from voting for him.

But don't hold your breath.

21. here's what you actually get, and I'm disappointed you wouldn't call me an elitist to my face.
1. The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources.
2.
1. The sense of entitlement enjoyed by such a group or class.
2. Control, rule, or domination by such a group or class.

28. Here's what you get when you look up uppity:
1. affecting an attitude of inflated self-esteem; haughty; snobbish.
2. rebelliously self-assertive; not inclined to be tractable or deferential.

Identical definitions for two separate words.

Elitist is Hill code for uppity. Make no mistake about it.

I can't elaborate too much without breaking DU rules. But when someone brags about throwing away more money than a typical Wal Mart employee takes home in a month, on a lost cause..... well that should be the dictionary definition of "elitist" right there.

25. You understand, right, that there's good elitism and bad elitism?
Elitism deriving from the brain is good. Elitism deriving from the pocketbook is bad. Unfortunately, too few people understand the difference and they've come to believe that all of it is bad. Of course, they're mostly blinded by feelings of inferiority, jealousy, and self-loathing, so much so that they picture anyone smarter than them as automatically some sort of threat, and view anything an intellectual says as "lording it over them", even though that's almost never the case.

26. Are you an elitist? I dunno. I need more information.
Edited on Sun May-04-08 02:06 PM by lumberjack_jeff
1) if you've ever used the term "low information voter" you might be an elitist. Add bonus points if you've ever mentioned Obama's vote against the Iraq war on the same day.
2) if you don't understand why "clinging to their religion" might be considered condescending, you might be an elitist. Bonus points if "latte liberal" is the most personally offensive phrase that is ever used to describe you. Triple bonus points if you agree with the statement that Obama is here because of "God, fate, destiny or providence".
3) if you've ever recommended a post or wrote to a media company in support of anyone "exercising their free speech rights" to call other democrats "white trash" or "ignorant white fucks", you might be an elitist. Bonus points if you wrote the post in question.
4) if you've ever ridiculed Hillary's gas tax plan because it wouldn't lower gas prices, while simultaneously praising Obama's plan despite the fact that Obama's plan would raise gas prices, you might be an elitist. Bonus points if you think that the residents of ruralsville, IA should take their kids 20 miles to school in the snow on electric bikes.
5) if you've ever written a post saying "Polls show that college-educated folks vote for Obama. Hmmm... I wonder why that is?" you might be an elitist. Add one point for each typo. Two points for each smiley.

31. Ok, here are some answers, will you please ante up and call me an elitist now?
1) No I have not used that term or mentioned Obama's vote (which never happened).
2) I completely understand why "clinging to their religion" could be considered condescending, (like say, being called an elitist) to ANYONE, not just a certain subsection of voters. I've had to cling to my religion, just to hold on to hope (like when my job of 9 years was outsourced). And I still support Barack, because my reading of what he said was not as an insult, but a statement of truth.
3) I've got white trash in my blood, friend. I own my Oklahoma roots. Nothing to be embarrassed by.
4) I ridicule Hillary's gas plan because it is not a plan, it is a gimmick.
5) I dropped out of college because I thought I was going to do well as a musician. I did... until I developed a chronic condition that ended my career. I then went on to get a job that paid the bills, and made a career of it for 9 years, until it was taken from me and handed to a guy from India whom they flew in for me to train. I got to be his chauffeur while he was here. I've also struggled with drug addiction, financial ruin, and the chaos that revolves around overcoming these things. I tried to get back into school, but I can't afford to go, and my credit is shot.

I dare you, friend, call me a fucking elitist for trying to make something, anything of my life.

American voters will give you a pass for "mis-speaking" three times in public,

You're a fool, and have no right to call American voters and candidates for President "elitist".

In fact, you have no right to run for President at all, no matter who your cheating husband is, because you are a DIVIDER, not a uniter, and show no class as a leader.
