Let me tell you about the great people in North Carolina
Edited on Mon May-05-08 09:08 PM by thevoiceofreason
This past weekend, Mrs. Voice accompanied me to canvass North Carolina for Senator Obama. We had some frequent flyer coupons that were expiring so, well, what the heck. (Word to the wise -- if you are a fairly big person, like I am, don't rent a Corolla -- although inexpensive, they are a bit tight).

We flew into Durham, and in the second leg of the flight were regaled with the tale of our flight attendant, who purposefully arranges her schedule so she can spend overnights in states having upcoming primaries so she can canvass for Barack also!

When we got up Saturday morning, we showed up at the Durham HQ for Obama. Lots of folks were there, ready to get assigned to their areas. We went to the office on the NW side of Durham. We got our marching orders and hit the streets.

I have not been as impressed with the quiet dignity and steeley resolve of a group of people in my life as I was with the folks we canvassed. It was a primarily african american neighborhood, with a few governmental housing sections involved. I absolutely fell in love with these people -- most of whom were completely on the ball and asked "What good is a gas tax holiday going to do me when I don't even own a car and can't afford food?" Barack's answer to that was a message from the angels to these folks' ears. The ratio of Obama to Hillary in that area was over 25 to 1 Barack.

The second day, we handed out literature at a couple of churches (where the reception outside where we stood was overwhelming) then went to canvass a more racially mixed neighborhood. Once again, the folks often discussed having to make a choice between buying some meat and putting gas in the car. The idea of a social security assessment holiday was much more to their liking than the gimick(a word we heard many times) of a gas tax holiday. Another interesting thing. There were so many people who were quite thankful toward us for flying up from Texas to help out the good people in North Carolina learn of their polling places, etc. They especially liked my "Texans for Obama" t-shirt.

I love North Carolina. The people there are the absolute depiction of "salt of the earth." I know without a doubt from the people my wife and I visited that North Carolina is going to come out strong for Senator Obama.

Final part of the story. My wife and I are at the airport waiting to fly back. A group of three Obama maniacs come up to us -- lo and behold, they were part of the dreaded O-train of Obama supporters from Tampa Florida who were there walking and canvassing too (they were canvassing closer to Raleigh). We had a great time and caused quite a stir as everyone at the airport had to walk by and witness the congregation of Obama supporters who had come from afar to witness the majestic spirit of the people of North Carolina. Having said all that, I will bid you good night. Sleep well, Team Obama, the patriots of North Carolina shall carry the day, of that I am assured.

5. Why is Hillary Clinton wearing my old carpet?
For real. There's a reason I decided to throw it away, and it's not pretty.

15. Meeting my fellow Americans has been the most uplifting part of this inspiring campaign
I'm glad it's lasted this long. I'm glad it appears all 50 states will get a shot to weigh in!

I've canvassed Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana and it's been a hoot. An unforgettable experience. Our "Fun-Raiser" in northern Kentucky Saturday night was the highlight of the campaign for me, so far.

What a great story, and thank you, thevoiceofreason!!!

16. We thank all who have come here to Carolina and their efforts.
Met a guy from DC canvassing for Obama. When our campaign director here talked about the South Carolian primaries, he said a lot of people from NC went to SC to help out the Obama campaign because they thought our primary wouldn't count (being so late). Now that it does, we appreciate all who have come here for team Obama. Funny how things happen and work out.

18. We had the same experience in Texas
We housed two staffers, one from New Zealand, one from New jersey, for two weeks. Houston is a large place, and we could not have carried it without the selfless help of all of our brothers and sisters across the nation.

19. MR. Voice: IN A WORLD... THAT WAS READY TO ELECT OBAMA...
IN A LAND... WHERE BOTH OF OUR FREQUENT FLYER MILES WERE EXPIRING...

ONE MAN... DEFIANTLY COURAGEOUS...

AND ONE WOMAN... BOUND TO HONOR... MADE ALL THE DIFFERENCE.

Got introduced to Sweet Tea and it changed my unsweet Texan DNA forever.

Oh, and Lake Norman was pretty fun too. Mountains were real pretty. Beach was close.
Not a bad place at all.
