Controversial developer raises pro-Bush sign, and some eyebrows
I didn't think this was really LBN but it's interesting...

CUMBERLAND — Many of his neighbors may not know him well, but anyone passing by Hope Island these days certainly knows who John Cacoulidis will be voting for in November. An immense, white banner endorsing President George Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney adorns the top half of a boathouse on the southwest side Cacoulidis' Hope Island estate.

That end of the island faces Chebeague Island, and the sign has been raising some eyebrows, according to Ed Doughty, owner of Doughty's Island Market.

"I've heard a lot of comments," he said. "They're a few that love it, but a lot that don't."

...

A third question that code enforcement officer William Longley will explore is whether Cacoulidis needed a permit to erect the banner, something the sign ordinance also states is needed. Officials said no permit has been issued to Cacoulidis for the banner.

...
Cacoulidis has made headlines many times over the years, and has attempted to secede from Cumberland to avoid property taxes, claiming he received no town services from his tax dollars.

2. typical
Like we'd need a banner to tell us he's a bush supporter....

3. Ah To Own Hope Island, This Guy Must Be Loaded
The picture shows a garage type structure, but Hope Island has a mansion on it with something like 22 rooms.

It is a beautiful island in beautiful Casco Bay, off the coast of Portland Maine.

4. I hope he gets to keep his sign.
I hate Home Owners Associations and neighbors who want to tell me waht I can and cannot do on my own property.

6. I agree with you to a point
I don't like being told what I can do on my property either but when it runs afoul of town ordinance that's a different story.

I don't think this is a case of a "neighborhood association" rule.

5. Let him keep it
Reading the article, I expected some unsightly eyesore, but it doesn't look so bad in the picture. It's free speech, and if they make him take it down, it will just be one more thing for the crybaby Repugs to whine about.

7. Let him keep it - it will probably lose Bush votes - it is an ugly
boathouse and an ugly sign. When I see candidate's signs displayed promiscously in highway medians, on electric poles, etc. where they pollute the public space - I am inclined to vote against that candidate if I am on the fence about which candidate to support. In other words, the manners of a candidate's supporters has an effect on how I feel about that candidate and I suspect this is true for a lot of voters.
