This wasn't to get us through the summer but to get them through the election. She played it through this election and should be aware that the scrutiny will not go away.

Nobody fixing the potholes, because it would be deemed more profitable not to do so.

Until nobody could have a job capable of paying for the repairs.

If a Senator really wanted to help consumers re fuel, wouldn't he/she (McCain/Clinton) be advocating something along the line of windfall profits tax on the companies fucking consumers over the barrel?

15. Use the windfall profit tax (AFTER you are in office)
to develop biofuels that DO NOT have the drawbacks that corn ethanol and Oil Palm have.

Biofuels like Jatropha and algae.

We need to convert to over 50% bio fuels and clean energy in the next 8 years. Maybe sooner.

39. Not enough to pass it
But that's a misleading indicator. Since it has become such a divisive political football inside the Democratic race for the nomination, and since it obviously wouldn't become law even if they did pass it, it will not be looked at seriously, too much potential political downside with not enough political gain for Congressional Democrats to do so.

34. So where is the leadership?
She isn't fighting for it because she doesn't think she can get it passed?

This is what I wrote about here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x5821728

Where is the leadership she's boasting of? Here's an issue with some support on both sides of the aisle, even supported by the Bush-endorsed Republican presidential nominee, and she's practically giving up on it?

So either her leadership ability in the senate isn't so great, or she never really believed in this dumb idea in the first place, take your pick.

35. What a waste of time
As soon as she first proposed it, everyone who heard it pointed out the multiple problems - the fact that there was no way to ensure the oil companies wouldn't simply pass on the cost to consumers, that it wouldn't save consumers much, that it would cost highway maintenance plenty, and that she wouldn't be able to get it through Congress or past the president's desk.

So she's spent all this time and effort selling a policy that she knew from the word go would be dead in the legislative water. Gee, thanks - for nothing. And i she were president, we'd see a lot of this - grand proposals which she knows are doomed to failure, but which allow her to gain political capital before she turns around and blames the failure on external forces - a new vast right-wing conspiracy, foreigners, space aliens or whatever.

49. She knew this before she proposed it.
That is mostly why i have seen this as pandering since the very beginning. Whether she actually had any intention at all of proposing the legislation, she knew there would be no consensus for it and that she could blame its failure on someone else.

It's actually a win/win for her. If it passes, she can say she's a champion of the working man. If it fails, she can use it as a further illustration of how out-of-touch and elitist her opponents are. I think what she didn't count on, was most people smelling the BS before she let it out of the bag.

Something like that.

Use this against her and paint her as a dishonest typical politician in the upcoming contests.

69. He doesn't have to. Kerry and co will do that for him. Thats the better strategy
But his campaign should definitely not let this disappear into the sunset.

It's hard work catapulting that propaganda!

89. From the OP link:
Clinton has painted economists -- and Obama -- who have panned the proposal, as being out of touch with working-class voters. She repeated that theme on Monday.

You see, if the economists were plain, every-day, 'working class' folks, they wouldn't have all that fancy 'edumacation' that shows that a gas tax holiday is more of a benefit to the oil companies then 'regular people'.

It's hard work catapulting the propaganda.

90. $10K? Not even close.
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/tax_hybrid.shtml

Hybrids purchased or placed into service after December 31, 2005 may be eligible for a federal income tax credit of up to $3,400.

Credit amounts begin to phase out for a given manufacturer once it has sold over 60,000 eligible vehicles.
