The Candidate I Want Defeated
Edited on Sat Jan-03-04 10:22 PM by Clark4Prez
I met a supporter of the candidate I fear the most. He was a nice man, middle aged, lifelong Democrat.

And he supported the one that will cost us the White House, seats in the House and Senate, and four more years of GWB. This candidate is not just an opponent but an enemy, one worthy of defeat.

With all the strong talk on DU, you might ask why I would so openly attack like this. The answer is simple, because I love my country and hate to see what is happening. If this candidate wins, we all lose, each and every one of us. Yes, even you.

Who is this opponent that I fear and loath? His name is Apathy. And I met an ardent supporter just this week. You see, I was in my hotel lobby getting ready to see General Clark on his True Grits tour. Wearing my Clark shirt and button proudly so everyone could see. This nice man walked by and said, "Clark guy, huh?" I responded in the affirmative, and he said, "Too bad, he's going to lose." My first thought was perhaps that he supported another Democratic candidate, but I was wrong. He added, "Bush is going to win big," he said his smile fading like the evening sun across the western sky, "I'm a Democrat my whole life, and Bush is going to win."

The experience took some of the wind out of my sails and certainly changed my perspective from where it had been the last few weeks. No matter which candidate you support for President, the opponent that has an unlimited budget, no need for equal time, and a die hard base of support also has no staff, no offices, and is running in every state.

Apathy, if we don't defeat it, we don't defeat Bush, plain and simple.

1. Very well put...
we need to encourage people like that man that this isn't over yet. He needs to know that his support of the Democratic party counts and that he can make a difference.

2. Don't worry
Last I heard Apathy wasn't polling too well, plus he's pretty low on funds.

4. Jon Stewart asked Clark if he wants to cut any state loose. He said:
"The state of apathy"

8. no, imhotep is at least not a hypocrite
doesn't defend or praise other candidates, just stops by DU, looks for all Clark-related posts, leave one-liner snips at Clark in each one, then leaves.

18. Dean is the true bushlite NOT clark
Sorry to burst your bubble. They have so many similarities - it's downright scary.

19. The Bush- lite candidate
is Dean, though I'm not sure if Bush-lite is the right word (I think Bush and Dean are more alike than the term Bush-lite would appear to indicate).

13. It's true
Apathy will kill us. Won't matter who we put up.

Why bother to vote. Bush will win. I will stay home and watch "Survivor" instead of waiting 5 minutes in line to vote.

15. Only if we let it
Apathy will kill us.

If we let apathy win without putting up a big fight well then we deserve it.

The press sure won't do it so it is up to us to snap America out its stupor. I think it can be done and I think Bush can be beat.

14. Ergo, the importance of respecting enthusiasm
for "the" candidate of choice.

I can understand comparative criticism, as in "Your candidate sucks at X, while my candidate excels at it"

I fail to understand destructive criticism, as in "Your candidate sucks - period."

See too much of the latter around here.

Then again, I draw my energy from stuff like that, so don't mind me.

16. Absolutely!
Enthusiasm is a good thing, no matter which candidate it is for, as long as it's a Democrat! This event was a wake up call for me, for sure.
