Talking with my girlfiend during lunch I explained Hillary plight with this analogy.
Image if you will a basketball game in which Hillary is down 39 points with 5 seconds left on the clock and she calls a timeout.

Knowing there is no viable way to win or delusional enough to think she actually still can win she does the following:

Hillary yells that the play by play announcers are sexist.

Hillary tries to bribe the referees to somehow convince them that the score does not matter.

Bill decides to unplug the scoreboard.

Hillary begs and cries for her fans to send her money so she can hire top talent to help her win the in the last 5 seconds.

Hillary pleads her fans to leave their couches watching the game at home to come out and support her in the stands of the basketball game for the last 5 seconds.

Hillary claims she should be able to take 40 points from another basketball game that was played 3 months ago and add them to this game. Even though they never played that game.

Suddenly 3 players show up from the crowd saying that they are there to help her win because some fat slob drug addict told them to.

Hillary then sets fire to the building claiming it was all Obama's divisiveness and she won the basketball game.

1. I prefer baseball...the Clintons are batting in the bottom of the 9th...
...trailing 10-3, no on and two out. The game isn't over...but an awful lot of fans are heading to the parking lot.

11. I don't mind the fans heading to the parking lot.
But the ones who say the umpires should just call the game OVER at the end of the 8th are the ones who get to me.

15. Better baseball analogy
When the game is out of reach, even a losing manager -- who theoretically could win if his slumping teams scored 12 runs in the last inning -- will pull his starters and not use his key bullpen people, so as to increase the team's chances of winning down the road.

18. I don't see how that analogy works in this case.
Are you saying that the Hillary-side should pull Hillary out of the race? Or that she should be running and fire all her best people? Or what?

22. I think that the meaning
is that she should step back from the "all out" strategy, which by necessity involves slash and burn, Nuclear MAD options, and general destructiveness. She has lost, barring a miracle. She should thus play it easy, because if that miracle happens it won't matter, particularly at this point, whether she has done her best to take Obama down, or just coasted through the last 200 delegates.

and you're already in debt, I think that it's time to pull the starters and accept your loss. As in, stop spending so much effing money!

6. Irony Synchronicity alert .... last night the Hindenberg crashed 71 years ago
During its second year of service, it went up in flames and was destroyed while landing at Lakehurst Naval Air Station in Manchester Township, New Jersey, U.S., on 6 May 1937. Thirty-six people died in the accident, which was widely reported by film, photography and radio media.

7. Chess is a more apt analogy
Edited on Wed May-07-08 01:03 PM by IWantAnyDem
It's the chess championship.

Clinton has only her King left.

Obama has two rooks and his queen still, having sacrificed his bishop in his last move, which Clinton took thinking she could win.

It's mate in two and it's Hillary's move.

Five moves ago, it was mate in seven and anybody who understands chess knew it.

16. Slight problem with the analogy....
if Obama has "two rooks and his queen" with no king he has already lost the game.

17. I didn't mention the king
because when speaking of material advantages in chess, one always assumes the king is there.

The only time to mention the king is when that's all you have.

26. It's worse than that
Obama has been playing two games of chess simultaneously, one against Clinton and another against McCain, blind (where you're not even looking at the chessboard while you play) and Hillary has been playing tic-tac-toe.

Not to sound sexist, but they usually roll their eyes thinking... "Can't he think of ANYTHING ELSE?" and then tunes you out for the rest of your explaination. If your GF is a BB fan, then go for it. Most guys aren't as lucky as you though.

13. Yea, Yazmin is somewhat new to politics.
So she asked what is the environment that Hillary is in. So I wanted to put it in a sports explanation and she loves basketball.

...and no she did not run out, and no I was not trying to be funny.

In fact I love her with all my heart and in a year I will ask her to be my wife.

20. Since he doesn't yet have enough delegates to be the official winner,
that analogy doesn't work for me.

(I'm sure he will end up with them, but he doesn't have them yet. And the remaining states, including my neighbors in Oregon, might like to have a say in this.)

21. A chess analogy is also apt.
In chess, when players are practiced enough, they know when they're losing - in fact, they can visualize several moves ahead and know what's going to happen, and declare "Mate in eight moves." Most players, when they reach that point, where they know they will be checkmated in a few moves, will resign the game, and in fact, it is considered proper chess etiquette to resign when you're clearly going to lose.

That's where this primary season is at, mathematically. Obama checkmates Hillary in just a few moves, no matter what she does, and it's proper etiquette for Hillary to resign the game at this point, so party resources can be conserved for the fight against McCain.

Hillary is not playing in the right court if she tries to play Basketball against Obama's team.

She should try some other game, one where it's okay to change the rules in the middle of the game........don't know which one allows that.........but Hillary must know.

Oh yes, it's called POLITICS!@

39. Using the same analogy of basketball game
Hillary is down 8 points with 5 seconds left. The crowd is very divided. Should Hillary just walk of the court? No way. She knows she won't win so she stops fouling and lets the game finish. The fans recognize that the game was tough and there were some bad fouls. In the end the players shake each others hands. The fans of the loser are upset, but much less than if Hillary was forced to quit the game because she was behind. If that happened the resentment they felt for the other team would continue until the championship. Let the game finish calmly and the fans will appreciate it.
