Hillary's rural white low information base in their own words
Ugly truth why Hillary Clinton won't quit

BY THOMAS M. DeFRANK - DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU

New York Daily News - Wednesday, May 7th 2008

While the case for Hillary Clinton to stay in the race is shakier than ever, one ugly reason for staying in could be found Tuesday amid the ruddy, sun-kissed Hoosiers who cheered her on to victory at the Indianapolis Speedway.

With Clinton posing alongside pioneering Indy speedster Sarah Fisher, there were almost no African-Americans to be seen. Many in the white, working-class crowd were simply not ready to back Barack Obama - for reasons that are disturbing.

"I'm kind of still up in the air between McCain and Hillary," said Jason Jenkins, 32, who cited information from a hoax e-mail as a reason to spurn Obama.

"I'll be honest with you. Barack scares the hell out of me,"he said. "He swore on the Koran."

Obama did manage to pull in many white voters, but still encountered similar sentiments from a man who refused to shake his hand at a diner in Greenwood, Ind.

"I can't stand him," the man said. "He's a Muslim. He's not even pro-American as far as I'm concerned."

(...)

Two separate sources in the Clinton orbit insisted Tuesday night it's now more likely Hillary will pursue her quest until the August convention in Denver - unless party leaders rise up en masse and publicly tell her it's time to stop. The math, after all, remains solidly in Obama's favor.

"I can think of no reason why it would not go to the convention now," one top Hillary Democrat predicted. "Why should she get out?"

Some insiders still want to make sure no new bombshells will explode around the freshman Illinois senator.

"He could slip and stumble some more, her polls could continue to be strong, and once the party decides what to do with Florida and Michigan, his lead in the popular vote will be very narrow," an insider said.

(...)

Is this the democratic party? If these voters are going to remain woefully ignorant, I'm sorry but these voters will be scared into voting for McCain, they are that gullible.

Fact, the lower the income and education levels the lower the turnout. If we think this is our base, we are delusional.

36. It's one thing to seek support and stand up for the best interests of all people ...
... and quite another to exploit ignorance, pander to bigotry, and/or promulgate the perpetuation of institutionalized privilege. I hold it as axiomatic that learning and education is a 'public good.' I hold it as axiomatic that any form of bigotry, whether it's based on race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or national origin is toxic both to individuals and to our society. I know that people who personally benefit from any condition have a tendency to perpetuate that condition, good or bad. "Problems" are often seen as "rice bowls" ... like a medical industry that's enriched more by treatment than by cure or prevention. I know that many see such campaign themes as justified under the theory that the "ends justify the means." But I also know that's a morally bankrupt theory, since the means almost always become the ends.

4. "...Is this the democratic party?..."....NO it's NOT
any democrat who is considering voting for Mccain is NOT a democrat..

the whole myth of the reagan dem is what's to blame.. MANY red states USED to be blue..when reagan ran in '80 there were still many many people alive who had voted for FDR and in rural areas, he was a GOD to them..he saved them from the depression & the dustbowl...BUT by 80, they were old, and their kids & grandkids were NOT like them.. They grew up selfish and priviledged..ripe for a guy like reagan who was all about "me"..not "we"

the reagan dems may have called themselves dems, but the real dems( the old folks) were the only ones who had probably ever even voted for a dem..

96. Alot of them were "Upscale Dems" ...who saw "truth" in the DLC Agenda that Clintons were saying
having been "left behind under Nixon" and had problems with "Carter that they supported" they saw "Wage Price Freezes" and "WIN" buttons under Ford and promises of BETTER under Carter be "Gone with the Wind." When Clintons came on the scene...promising "Hope and Change" and working with Business Community to HELP alot of the same folks looking to OBAMA like (me, a new convert) bought into it all. My huge worry is that Obama will be another Carter! But, I voted for him in NC yesterday...figuring I always go with the "Hope and Change" person...even though I voted for the Clintons hoping that the "Guy from Hope, Arkasas and his Wife...might FINALLY GET what America needed...and work with Repugs to make it so.....

That's where I learned that "Hope and Change" sound "GREAT." ...But always be wary of the "Interpretation." It might not be what one things......:-( But, I Took the Plunge and voted for ANOTHER "Hope and Change." Let's HOPE he does better than those who "walked the path" before him.

I'm "ever hopeful" and that's why I'm a loser Dem....:-(

It's insane and dense. I'm willing to bet that the Cleti quoted above wouldn't vote for Senator Clinton under any circumstances, but don't mind lying now to make it seem that they might be wooed if only we'd field the right (no pun intended) candidate.

There's a term for Reagan Democrats. They're called Republicans, and they have been for a generation.

Clinton decries the "activist base" of this party, also known as the people that are most informed and most likely to vote, because they do not support her.

then you're gonna LOVE his new re-vamped WV BUBBA'S BACK "Dukes of Hazard" tour. I HOPE whomever covering Bill Clinton is taking notes, especially having "a mic" in those handshaking lines. He's playing that good ole' Lee Atwater minted "Southern Strategy."

Edited on Wed May-07-08 05:39 PM by KoKo01
 I must have missed that ..and I voted for him yesterday because of "Women's Voices,Vote" Flap. But, I see that Obama Supporters are really "Elitists" who look down on "Pick Up Truck Drivers" who live all over America.

It took me a long time to decide to vote for Obama because of the supporters here on DU who were the nastiest bunch of people I've ever come across on all my years on DU. And...don't come at me that Hillary Supporters on DU were as BAD...because there were only about 10 of them compared to Hundreds of Obama Supporters and being here a long while...it was easy to see that some folks always were kind of nasty but I learned to tolerate them.

If you look down on "Truck Drivers" and the Poor and Uneducated as a Democrat...then it does make me wonder who the hell are you? Where are YOUR LOYALTIES...? Sounds like Repug Talking Points and not Democratic Ones!

57. The problem is, we need to stand up for rural "pick up truck drivers" who are NOT closed-minded.
I don't care if someone's ignorant -- most people I know are.

Especially many "upper-middle class" folks who think they're
so smart, but are really just specialized, ladder climbers.

But I don't have any truck with prejudice and closed-mindedness.

It's against the tenets of our religion, for one thing.

69. You want ignorant racists in the Democratic Party?
It's a bad thing to not want stupid people in your party? I don't have a problem with "rural pickup drivers" I have a problem with rulal pickup drivers who won't vote for a black man for no other reason than because he's a black man.

That's pretty simple to understand isn't it?

Please tell me you are high right now, that might excuse this post.

74. "He's a muslim. He's not even American. I can't stand him."
I have never said we shouldn't reach out to "truck drivers" and the like...why do you automatically assume that they're all racist and believe the same thing? Maybe you ought to consider your own thoughts on this matter.

People who use the excuse that "he's muslim" for not voting for him are fucking racist. Period. Big as the tent is, there is no room for that.

Tell me, what do you think of the McClurkin fiasco? Should we be catering to anti-gay bigots as well?

89. What in hell are you talking about?
My "ignorant' comment was a reflex to this stupidity:

"I'm kind of still up in the air between McCain and Hillary," said Jason Jenkins, 32, who cited information from a hoax e-mail as a reason to spurn Obama.

"I'll be honest with you. Barack scares the hell out of me,"he said. "He swore on the Koran."

Obama did manage to pull in many white voters, but still encountered similar sentiments from a man who refused to shake his hand at a diner in Greenwood, Ind.

"I can't stand him," the man said. "He's a Muslim. He's not even pro-American as far as I'm concerned."

As they like to pretend they are, when they pretend to make common cause
with low-income white homeowners as fellow members of the "middle class"
even though some are getting ahead and some aren't. The idea being,
screw labor solidarity -- more of "us" will "get ahead" and leave the
working class behind if "undeserving" blacks are excluded.

Poor RW and Poor Drudge who funnels his stuff to them.

And "poor Dem Enablers" who pass on this CRAP from RW SITES. I never cease to be amazed at the number of people who are otherwise not insane, who put great faith in some email someone sends them. These are people who never read a blog, never visit a news site online, never read a paper more than 15 minutes a day.

Oh, but some email that proclaims itself bona fide is lapped up like mother's milk.

That except for the 7% or so of Hillary voters who are card-carrying Republicans who never inteded to vote for ANY Democrat in the general election, the rest of Hillary's "white" base are blue-collar Democrats whose votes we're going to need come November. The Daily News cherry-picks and handfull of idiotic quotes (and I'm not ruling out that there were totally fabricated), and the blogosphere goes nuts bashing small town voters. Good job, people.
