"Beware of the simplifiers"

Bill Moyers did a great article about this tendency we have to bring politics down to a very low level

in his Journal on PBS.

It's relevant to the discussion that we should be having in this country about race and how it impacts on everyone.

Maybe this should be in GD but because he discusses the Rev Wright "controversy" I think it's relevant to this forum.

It is, however, necessary to read the transcript.

1. Dumb it down, and when you fail claim it's too difficult.
Nobody anticipated failure after failure.

I can't WAIT to take on McCain.

2. Me too.
I guess the thread title just wasn't provocative enough to promote any discussion of Moyers' article.

Thanks for your comment.

3. Bill Moyers is correct to point out that the media's treatment...

...of Pastor Wright was, to a certain degree, rooted in racism, but that does not mean that all scrutiny or criticism of Wright is rooted in racism. For instance, I feel perfectly justified in scrutinizing and criticizing Barack Obama's association with Pastor Wright because I have always scrutinized and criticized the relationships politicians have with religious zealots and with religion in general.

Anyway, I thank you for the link to the Moyers article.

4. I agree with you.
The pandering connection between politicians and religion and its reverse always seems at odds with the idea of church state separation.

It is not an area that, I believe, has a place in the public sphere. Ethics, yes. Basic humanity, yes. Doctrine and dogma, no.

8. So, you think Rev Wright was off about the AIDS virus? Read this
http://www.onlinejournal.com/artman/publish/article_115.shtml

I might add that in there is a slew of scientific reports out there that in many ways support Wright's so-called "bizzare allegations."

Any links to peer reviewed studies and not wild speculation?
